Hauteur 1,41 m Largeur 1,12 m A Hauteville House, Victor Hugo avait aménagé sa chambre au dernier étage, à proximité de son cabinet de travail et du look-out d’où il contemplait la mer et, par temps clair, les côtes de France. Les travaux de cette petite pièce avaient commencé dès 1858. En novembre 1861 il avait fait fixer dans la boiserie, de part et d’autre de la fenêtre, ces deux panneaux qu’il avait conçus quelques mois auparavant : " J’ai dessiné hier et aujourd’hui les deux grands panneaux du dragon pour mon look-out " mentionne-t-il dans ses carnets le 10 mars 1861. Victor Hugo (1802-1885) Certains critiques ont proposé d'appeler le XIXe siècle « le siècle de Victor Hugo ». Il l'occupe en effet non seulement par sa longévité, par son autorité comme chef de file des romantiques, mais aussi par l'ampleur de son oeuvre. Artiste complet, peintre également, il a écrit pour tous les genres : poésie, théâtre, roman. C'est aussi un poète engagé, un homme politique libéral qui s'est mis au service des grandes idées humanitaires. Les débuts littéraires : Le romantisme : Victor Hugo prend nettement position en faveur du romantisme et contre le classicisme. Dans la préface de Cromwell (1827). Il devient le chef de file de l'école romantique et triomphe avec son drame Hernani. Lors de la première représentation devant le public de la Comédie-Française, partisan du classicisme, les jeunes défenseurs du romantisme forcent le succès par leurs applaudissements. Ils livrent ainsi chaque soir ce que l'on a appelé la bataille d’Hernani.. Succès littéraires et échecs personnels : Victor Hugo connaît alors une intense activité littéraire dans tous les genres. En 1841, il entre à l'Académie française. Cette période féconde est pourtant assombrie par des chagrins personnels. Son ménage est brisé par la trahison de son ami Sainte-Beuve. Quelques années plus tard, il perd sa fille aînée (1843), Léopoldine, qui se noie accidentellement. La douleur du père est muette. Il s’écoulera 16 ans entre sa dernière publication : Les Rayons et les Ombre (1840) et le recueil consacré à la mémoire de Léopoldine intitulé : Les Contemplations (1856). En 1845, il devient député au parlement, à Paris.

Hugo, Victor le Conservateur littéraire , rédigée presque intégralement par lui. À vingt ans, le jeune poète publia ses Odes (1822), recueil encore classique par sa forme mais plein d'audace, qui lui valut une pension royale. La disparition de sa mère en 1821 permit à Victor d'épouser l'année suivante Adèle Foucher, son amie d'enfance. De ce mariage, il eut quatre enfants : Léopoldine (1824), Charles (1826), François-Victor (1828) et Adèle (1830). En 1827, la préface que Victor Hugo rédigea à sa tragédie, Cromwell — sa première œuvre dramatique —, devint immédiatement le manifeste du théâtre romantique. Le 25 février 1830, la représentation de la pièce Hernani , qui était pour Hugo l'occasion de mettre lui-même en pratique ses principes, se déroula dans une atmosphère surchauffée par les polémiques entre défenseurs de la tradition et tenants des nouvelles doctrines. C'est cette soirée mouvementée, restée dans l'histoire littéraire sous le nom de « bataille d'Hernani », qui fit officiellement de Hugo le chef de file du romantisme français. Hugo illustra encore ses théories au théâtre, notamment avec des drames passionnés comme Le roi s'amuse (1832), qui fut interdit par la censure
