Warwickshire Worthies Joseph Arch John Barber Neville Chamberlain William Croft ... Sir Christopher Wren
Joseph Arch Trade Union Organiser and Politician
Arch was born in the village of Barford, near Warwick, the son of an agricultural labourer. He himself worked as a labourer for many years, but because of his strength of character and his role as a Methodist lay-preacher became a leading figure in the area. He spoke out against the poor conditions of the working classes, and following an Act of Parliament in 1871 which legalised Trade Unions, he formed the Warwickshire Agricultural Labourers' Union. After a successful strike to raise pay, a National Union of Agricultural Labourers was formed, with Arch as President and its headquarters in Leamington. In 1885 he became Liberal MP for North West Norfolk, the first agricultural labourer ever to attain such a position.

Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Volume IV, George Llewellyn Christian: "Many men attain eminence in their chosen fields of labor; some in more than one field, but it is rarely that any man is able to so impress himself upon the life of the community as has George Llewellyn Christian, soldier, lawyer, jurist, banker, literatteur and business men. Born of sturdy Manx ancestry, he traces to Thomas Christian who came to Virginia from the Isle of Man in 1687, and founded a family in Charles City county, that as farmers, lawyers, judges, ministers, educators, physicians and business men have won distinction and been associated with the development of Virginia from colonial days to the present. Along maternal lines his descent is traced in Virginia to even an earlier day, the Graves family coming from England early in the seventeenth century.

An architect's drawing of Uffington House, currently the subject of a major restoration programme. Uffington House is part of the historic town of Rugby, Tennessee , founded by Thomas Hughes (1822-1896), author of 'Tom Brown's Schooldays', in 1880. The 'Margaret' referred to above is Margaret Hughes (née Wilkinson) (1797-1887), mother of Thomas Hughes, and the 'Emily' referred to is Emily Hughes (b. 1863), daughter of William Hastings Hughes, brother of Thomas. Emily Hughes married Ainsley Marshall in 1902 in California and shortly afterwards they moved to Kenya. Our last contact with her was a letter written to my grandfather in 1936 from Jebalat, Sotik, Kenya It is incredible to think that this letter (there is a copy of it in front of me now) was written by a woman who knew someone, her grandmother Margaret, who was born 200 years ago and who herself knew people (her own father-in-law for instance) whose memory stretched back to the time of the American Revolution. Margaret's father-in-law, Rev. Thomas Hughes, was born in 1756, while George III was alive. Emily Hughes was probably alive at the start of World War II. She knew someone who was alive at the time of the French Revolution and who quite possibly remembered the day when news of a great naval victory, the battle of Trafalgar (1805), spread through every town and village in England.

    Children's Literature
Island 4: Boys' Stories of School, Adventure, and Empire Series publishing for gifts and prizes The pioneer writer of boys' adventure stories was Frederick Marryatt (1792-1848), an ex-naval officer who wrote a whole series of shipboard novels. His Masterman Ready, or the Wreck of the Pacific , first published in three volumes in 1841-42, is a desert island story in the tradition of Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson . It was ten years later before a second edition was called for, but many more followed. The reprint shown here, from Frederick Warne's Prize Library series in 1891, is open at a typical publisher's catalogue of the period, listing title after title suitable for gifts and school (or Sunday School) prizes. R. M. Ballantyne and boys' adventure stories R. M. Ballantyne (1825-1894), the son of an Edinburgh printer who was apprenticed to the Hudson's Bay Company in Canada as a teenager, created boys' adventure stories that both instilled the values of manly independence and conveyed (from the author's personal experience) an extraordinary range of information about exciting, dangerous new career opportunities. His best-known work Coral Island is shown in an earlier case. Displayed here are a reprint of Ballantyne's first book
