In 1831 an Act of Parliament was passed enabling the formation of the railway company. The first trials were not made until 4th October 1834 when the 2-2-2 steam engine " Vauxhall " with a small train of carriages "filled with ladies and gentlemen" traveled from Dublin to the Martello Tower, Williamstown, a distance of two and a half miles. The trip was made four times in either direction, at a speed of thirty-one miles an hour. The passengers were delighted with the comfort, and some said they could read and write with ease while moving at "this great speed."

This represents the Genealogy as printed in Stanley Oldson's book: John Singer Sargent: His Portrait ; St. Martin's Press 1986; Appendix I I'm afraid I don't know anything more than what is here. I post this as I imagine it's of great interest to the extended family. I apologize for any inaccuracies or typos and welcome any corrections, additions, or links to other family pages. In fact, if a family member wishes to become the editor of this Genealogy page (in a sense become the webmaster) I will assist at getting you started in anyway I can. Certainly there is a myriad of branches that could be filled in. See forum below Natasha Wallace

William Adams's The Cherry Stones (completed in 1851 by his brother, Henry) successfully launched the genre, but the vitalising key texts were Thomas Hughes's Tom Brown's Schooldays (1857) and Frederick Farrar's Eric or, Little by Little

Ramblings with Clare Balding
Programme 5: Rugby - a town trail
First broadcast Friday 4 May 2001, 3.00-3.30 p.m. Companion: Margaret Healey, local resident and Tourist Information Officer Rugby is one of the few towns in the world to give its name to an internationally known game. Since the Rugby World Cup in 1999, the town has become a Mecca for rugby fans, and Clare starts her walk with Margaret Healey on the hallowed turf of the playing fields of Rugby School where William Webb Ellis first picked up the ball and ran. Margaret, not a great fan of the game, is able to walk Clare through the town centre pointing out other attractions of Rugby. These include the house where the poet Rupert Brooke was brought up, a shop featured in Tom Brown's School Days , and Jubilee Gardens, which used to be the site of the swimming baths. Rugby has a thriving industrial area, which had to be crossed during the walk to reach the more tranquil setting of Brownsover Hall (now a hotel) where Sir Frank Whittle developed the jet engine in the 1930s.

Some famous Oriel names
There is a College tradition that Sir Thomas More was a student at Oriel, but this cannot be substantiated. A tradition in his family placed him at Canterbury College (where the Canterbury Quad of Christ Church now stands). Another tradition suggests that he may have lodged in St Mary Hall , but there are no records to prove or disprove this. However, it is certain that all the following were at Oriel: Matthew Arnold (1822-1888)
Fellow 1845-1852
Poet and Critic Thomas Arnold (1795-1842)
Fellow 1815-1821
Headmaster of Rugby School and Regius Professor of Modern History Thomas Arundel (1353-1414)
Student 1373
Chancellor of England and Archbishop of Canterbury. Opposed Richard II and crowned Henry of Bolingbroke as Henry IV. George Bryan 'Beau' Brummell (1778-1840)
Undergraduate 1794
Dandy and arbiter of fashion Joseph Butler (1692-1752)
Student 1715-1721
Philosopher. Bishop of Bristol and Dean of St Paul's 1740. Bishop of Durham 1750. Thomas Hughes (1822-1896) Undergraduate 1841-1845 Author of Tom Brown's Schooldays and founder member of the Christian Socialists.
