Ditch the car. Lace up the walking shoes. The Welsh countryside, with its oddball legends and miles of trails, dares you not to have the time of your life.
by Joe Sugarman My wife and I have come to Wales to walk. Up hills. Across streams. Through lush meadows. And why not? Thousands of miles of walking paths snake across this land, including seven "long-distance paths" of more than 20 miles and three "national trails" that follow coastal ridges to rambling countryside. In an arrangement that would clearly scream "lawsuit!" in the United States, nearly all of Wales’ walking trails meander through privately owned land, across ancient public rights of way, trails and bridle paths that have been used for centuries to link hamlets. Your only responsibility is to close the paddock gate so the sheep don’t escape. We’ve also come to get to know Wales. A country the size of Massachusetts, its 11 million sheep outnumber its human population by four to one. Wales has long been the underdog of the United Kingdom. Bossed around by England for centuries and overshadowed by its Celtic cousins, Ireland and Scotland, Wales gets ignored by many American tourists. In other words, it sounded perfect.

Call.
Y curiosity having been rather excited with respect to the country beyond the Berwyn, by what my friend, the intelligent flannel- worker, had told me about it, I determined to go and see it. Accordingly on Friday morning I set out. Having passed by Pengwern Hall I turned up a lane in the direction of the south, with a brook on the right running amongst hazels, I presently arrived at a small farm-house standing on the left with a little yard before it. Seeing a woman at the door I asked her in English if the road in which I was would take me across the mountain - she said it would, and forthwith cried to a man working in a field who left his work and came towards us. "That is my husband," said she; "he has more English than I." "Do you bear his name?" said I. "I do," he replied.

CHAPTER XI
I went up the field with the lane on my right, down which ran a runnel of water, from which doubtless the house derived its name. I soon came to an unenclosed part of the mountain covered with gorse and whin, and still proceeding upward reached a road, which I subsequently learned was the main road from Llangollen over the hill. I was not long in gaining the top which was nearly level. Here I stood for some time looking about me, having the vale of Llangollen to the north of me, and a deep valley abounding with woods and rocks to the south.
Of Owain Gwynedd lawful progeny:
The verdant land had little charms for me;
I went back the way I had come, till I reached the little hamlet. Seeing a small public-house, I entered it. A good-looking woman, who met me in the passage, ushered me into a neat sanded kitchen, handed me a chair and inquired my commands; I sat down, and told her to bring me some ale; she brought it, and then seated herself by a bench close by the door. John Ceiriog Hughes
John Ceiriog Hughes ) was a Welsh poet, well known as a collector of Welsh folk tunes. His song lyrics include Dafydd y Garreg Wen ("David of the White Rock") and Clychau Aberdyfi ("The Bells of Aberdyfi"). He also wrote the Welsh words to the song, "God Bless the Prince of Wales". Like many Welsh poets, he took a bardic name - "Ceiriog" - from Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, in Denbighshire, where he was born. In his home village, the public library contains a memorial inscription to him.

Hughes, Howard Robard Hughes, Howard Robard, , U.S. business executive, b. Houston. As a young man he inherited (1925) the patent rights to an oil tool drill, which, manufactured by the Hughes Tool Company, formed the basis of his financial empire. His interest in aviation led to the formation of the Hughes Aircraft Corp. in the 1930s, which later became a major U.S. defense contractor. A pilot himself, he set a number of airplane records, including a world record (1935) of 352 mi (566 km) per hr in a plane of his own design. Hughes's interests in the 1920s and 30s also extended to the motion picture industry, and among the films that he produced were such classics as Hell's Angels and The Front Page. Through his parent concern, the Hughes Tool Company, he gained a controlling interest in Trans World Airways (TWA); when he divested himself of his TWA stock in 1966, he received $546.5 million. In the 1960s he purchased a number of gambling casinos in Las Vegas. A billionaire, he became a recluse in later years. His vast business interests involved him in extensive litigation.
