TRAVEL Travel Home London Guide Touring Online Planning Resources ... Scotland 1849-1869 AD 1849: FIRST WELSH SERVICE IN AUSTRALIA William Meirion Evans, of Llanfrothen, Merioneth, is believed to have been the first person to hold religious services in the Welsh language on the Australian continent when he preached at Burra in 1849. Evans is also remembered as the founder of the periodicals "Yr Awstrallydd" (the Australian) and "Yr Ymwelydd" (the Visitor) that acted as a link among the widely-scattered Australian Welsh communities during the second half of the 19th century. 1850: THE RHONDDA VALLEY TRANSFORMED The Rhondda, described in 1847 as "this solitudinous and happy valley . . . where a Sabbath stillness reigns," was only three years later described as "a vision of hell" where were found "poor creatures broiling or in sweat and dirt, amid their furnaces, pits, and rolling mills." What was said of the Rhondda could also be said of the other four major South Wales Valleys, in which the transformation was as equally rapid and the squalid conditions as equally pervasive, yet which produced a vibrant community life.

TRAVEL Travel Home London Guide Touring Online Planning Resources ... Scotland Chapter 15: 19th Century Much 19th century Welsh literature is closely related to the both the landscape and the effects of industrialization upon its inhabitants. In 1804 Benjamin Heath Malkin, in his "The Scenery", "Antiquities" and "Biography of South Wales" wrote the following: The workmen of all descriptions at these immense works [at Cyfarthfa, Merthyr Tydfil] are Welsh men. Their language is entirely Welsh. The number of English amongst them is very inconsiderable. Ninety years later, in an address to the Honourable Society of Commodorion, a statement by W. Llewelyn Williams showed, only too clearly, the great changes that had been taking place in Wales, especially regarding the language: The educated and the leisured classes have been brought up in ignorance of the Welsh language, and often with a distinct prejudice against it as a mere patois, unworthy of the respect of an educated and cultured man. Welshmen writing in the vernacular have, therefore, only a very limited circle to appeal to.

Rhan 1: Y Waun i Fetws y Coed Y tro yma, dim teithio o'r gogledd i'r de fyddwn ni fel ar yr A470. Na, ffordd sy'n croesi Gogledd Cymru o'r dwyrain i'r gorllewin ydy'r A5. Roedd hon yn ffordd bwysig a phrysur iawn ar un adeg - hon oedd y ffordd oedd yn cario pobol a'r post ar y goets fawr o Lundain (London) i Gaergybi (Holyhead). Mae'r A5 yn croesi'r ffin o Loegr i Gymru ym mhentre'r Waun (Chirk). Yma mae castell 700 oed - un o gestyll Edward I. Mae'r castell wedi bod yn gartref i'r teulu Myddleton er 1595 pan brynodd Thomas Myddleton y lle. Yn 1614 roedd Thomas Myddleton yn Arglwydd Faer Llundain ac yn 1630 talodd am gyhoeddi'r Beibl Bach Cymraeg. O'r Waun, gallwch chi deithio i'r gorllewin ac i fyny dyffryn hardd Afon Ceiriog ar y B4500. Dyma lle cafodd y bardd John Ceiriog Hughes ei eni yn 1832. Mae olion chwareli a hen dramffordd yn y dyffryn. Ond mae'r A5 yn troi i'r gogledd nes cyrraedd Afon Dyfrdwy (Dee), yna mae'n troi tua'r gorllewin ac yn teithio i fyny'r dyffryn i Froncysyllte. Dyma'r lle i weld Pontcysyllte - pont ddwr enwog Thomas Telford, sy'n cario camlas Llangollen ar draws y dyffryn.

The (detailed) History of LPP, part 3:
by John Ceiriog-Hughes Sampling the Delights of Academia
The new era for LPP took its lead from the AGM in when the society first held its annual gathering outside London. The AGM that year was at Lincoln with the annual exhibition nearby. This pattern was not copied in but was repeated in 1974 and has continued up to the time of writing this history. During these 14 years the LPP held its annual gatherings at 11 different colleges. In Dr Sacha Playfair organised the meeting at Homerton College, Cambridge on 21st September. In a similar manner to the Lincoln meeting, members gathered on the Saturday of the AGM and stayed in the college after the annual dinner, leaving the following day. The exhibition was on display from 21st to 28th September.
Dennis Hambury was the exhibition secretary and Sid Carter the Hon. Gen. Sec. Two important appointments were made, as Sid resigned he nominated Dennis as the new Hon. Gen. Sec., D Duncan as Assistant Sec. and Sacha Playfair became the new Editor of LPP News. Dennis and Sacha did much to set the tone and momentum of LPP for the next decade. CCBH continued as Treasurer (also as President) and Jack Boother as Chairman. It was interesting to note that although the membership was recorded as 198 in the minutes, there were only 177 members according to the circle membership list. Then as now, there must have been several members who were not in a circle. The total number of submissions for the annual exhibition was about half of the number submitted in later years from a smaller membership.
