Ceiriog Valley Walk It was intention to walk the new Ceiriog Valley Walk, as mentioned recently in ‘Rambler’ magazine, and to continue over the Berwyns, to Llandrillo in the Upper Dee Valley, a distance of about 30 kilometers. Previously, my main interest in the Ceiriog Valley was reading about the Glyn Valley Tramway, a mainly-roadside version of those ubiquitous slate-carrying narrow-gauge railways of Wales. This shut in 1934, and I knew there was comparatively little to be seen of its remains, due to its roadside location. Nevertheless, transport is a feature right from the beginning of the walk. Officially the walk starts either from Chirk town center, or from the Railway Station. I myself would suggest starting from Chirk Aqueduct, 20 meters above the River Dee. This aqueduct was built around 1800 by Telford (allegedly - although William Jessop was actually the Senoir Engineer on the canal), and was a precursor of the more-famous and longer Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which was completed a couple of years later, on the same canal – the Llangollen Canal. Construction of both aqueducts was similar, with a mortar consisting of, among other things, bulls’ blood, and a cast-iron trough to carry the water (this trough is covered in stone at Chirk and is not as obvious as in the ‘other’ viaduct). I have always read that cast-iron is brittle (in the material-science sense of the word) and not too strong, which tends to make me a bit nervous walking over these aqueducts.

THE AREA AROUND LLANGOLLEN AND
THE EGLWYSEG AND CEIRIOG VALLEYS LLANGOLLEN
THE EGLWYSEG VALLEY

The valley itself is now peaceful and quiet, in contrast to the 19th century, when lead, slate and copper mining were major industries. Boasting some of the oldest buildings in the area, the valley provides a scenic backdrop to a number of walks.
The Nant Eglwyseg (Eglwyseg Stream) runs down through the valley, past the historical ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey, to join the River Dee THE CEIRIOG VALLEY
Lloyd George said of the Ceiriog Valley "A little bit of heaven on Earth". Boasting the majestic Pistyll Rhaeadr, the highest waterfall in Wales and England, in a valley leading off it, the Ceiriog valley remains today still relatively undiscovered.
With the proud fortress of Chirk Castle standing at the entrance, the Ceiriog Valley runs parallel to and immediately south of the Vale of Llangollen. With an industrial history of mining, the Ceiriog Valley was also home to three noteable Welsh poets - Huw Morus (1622-1709), Rev. Robert Ellis (1812-1875) and John Ceiriog Hughes (1832-1887). John Ceiriog Hughes, known simply as Ceiriog, was renowned as the "Robert Burns of Wales".

Chapter 16 : The Struggle and the Dream Continue
One who was particularly offended by the government report on the status of Welsh education was Sir Hugh Owen, a pioneer in education in Wales. His open letter to the Welsh people in 1843 urged the acceptance of the schools of the British and Foreign Schools Society, and his untiring efforts to secure a university for Wales eventually led to a commission to promote the idea in 1854. As his pleas to the government for financial help went unheeded, the university itself was established mainly through voluntary contributions.
It was public subscription that brought to fruition the ancient dream of Owain Glyndwr, revived by such as R. J. Derfel, and promoted by Sir Hugh Owen. In 1872 Aberystwyth University accepted its first students in an impressive, but vacant hotel on the seafront. It was to attract many that would come to have profound influence on the culture and consciousness of the Welsh nation. In so many areas it provided the foundations for the national revival of the late 1890's.

    International Travel News
    May, 2001 by Gwynneth Tigner
If you like the English lake district you'll love northern Wales. In August '00 I discovered this area, relatively unknown to Americans, by taking an 8-day trip that surpassed any European tour I have taken in 15 years of travel. My excellent guide, Bryn Hughes of Ceiriog Country Holidays (Dolydd, Pontfadog, Llangollen, North Wales LL20 7AR; phone 01691-7138398, or e-mail bhughes@micro-plus-web.net), picked me up in and returned me to London. In Wales he housed me in the charming West Arms Hotel (e-mail gowestarms@aol.com or visit www.hotelwalesuk.com) in Llanarmon D.C. This is located in the Ceiriog Valley, not far from Llangollen and Wrexham. The hotel an inn, really dates from 1670. Rates are [pound]42-[pound]52 per person. The owners, Geoff and Gill LeighFord, are extremely hospitable and employ a gourmet chef, Grant Williams. Dinners in the pub ranged from [pound]8 to [pound]12 (about $12-$18) and were unique, savory and special. There is also a restaurant, where prices are higher. A tour package is available for dinner plus rooms, although we didn't take advantage of it.
