About the Book
In Lobsticks and Stone Cairns , over one hundred Arctic stories are told about adventurers, military officers, authors, guides, cultural heroes, police, traders, and even the occasional charlatan. While some of the biographies in the book are of people still active in the North, others tell stories from as far back as the sixteenth century. The subjects of the sketches are Inuit, European, American, Indian, and Canadian men and women. The exploits discussed in this generously illustrated book bring northern history and geography to life. Each profile is accompanied by a short bibliography.
Lobsticks are trees that are used as markers. Above the tree-line, stone cairns are used in their place. It is hoped that these biographies of "human" landmarks will help you find your way around in the North and bring the Arctic just a little closer to home. About the Author Richard C. Davis

November 15th, 2003 08:29 pm - Corinder's "Acquisition of Music Taste" theory:
Genetically transmitted: When you find yourself listening to - and grooving on - stuff your parents liked when you were little. Personally this accounts for the Christmas collection of Elvis songs, a Gordon Lightfoot album to which I know almost all the words, and the Bonzo Dog Doodah Band Greatest Hits. And the Carpenters. And ELO. And ... and ...
Peer transmitted: New Kids On The Block. Nuff said.
And Nine Inch Nails, truth be told. Plus many others.
Sexually transmitted: Ya know, when you hang around with someone a lot, and you really like them, enough to play doctors and nurses together, and they have a favourite band that they play All The Time, and you tolerate it 'cos ... you know, you're all soft on that person ... and then one day you wake up (not necessarily next to that person any more) and think - "I must buy some of that!" See Dream Theater, Tool, Wilco, Tori Amos, Mike Oldfield, Simple Minds, Kool Keith, umm, look ... I'll just stop listing there.
Randomly transmitted: The Universe takes a hand. None of the above. Music heard while clubbing counts as Peer Transmission. Radio may be Peer-related, but might be 'Random' choice too. Depends on the channel-surfing that one does. I have only two choices that without doubt fit into this category: Stabbing Westward and Thea Gilmore.

Recent and Forthcoming Books of Interest
  • Dangerous Encounters: Genealogy and Ethnography, ed. Maria Tamboukou and Stephen J. Ball. New York: Peter Lang 2003.
"This book explores the methodological and theoretical relationships between the epistemology of ethnographic research and the practices of Michel Foucault's genealogical method. Using examples from a number of field researchers who have attempted the demanding interface between ethnography and genealogy, [they] discuss their methods, their ontological assumptions and rehearse their doubts and problems. The collection provides a grounded and useful introduction for those who would follow this dangerous research path. "In Dangerous Encounters: Genealogy and Ethnography, a methodology of postructuralism meets and tangles with a methodology of modernity, resulting in a jazzy pastiche of multiple registers, interests, positions and embodiments. The authors use and abuse Foucault, which he would have desired ... and enjoyed. Read it! This is the best Foucault collection by those in education and other applied social areas since Foucault's Challenge.
