FROM THE 72MB VISOR
Shoot and Store on Your Visor
by BruceHP
I just couldn't help myself, I'm typing this at 30,000 feet on a flight from Atlanta to Baton Rouge. The Targus Stowaway is still a hit and even attracts attention at this altitude.
I had a wonderful Easter holiday and hope all of you did also.
The Treo still hasn't made it to my location, but with the help of Sprint it looks like it will soon. I still can't wait, but I have no choice.
Since I couldn't get the Treo yet, I purchased a Targus HandCam, which arrived just before I left for my flight. I grabbed the module and the instruction book and left the CD-ROM and the USB docking station at the house. The HandCam is not only a digital camera with a 2MB on-board memory card, it is also a video camera. It will shoot about 30 seconds of motion, or it can be used with the USB port and docking station as a Web camera. It comes with Net Meeting and maybe even a Web phone. The head that holds the lens swivels, so you can shoot with the lens pointing straight out the front of the Visor or (when using it as a Web camera),flip it to make its own monitor. The nonzoom lens has three marked focus areas, one for close-ups, a second for portraits and a third for landscapes. There is no flash, but it does have a self-timer.
The software is installed as you insert the HandCam Springboard into the Visor, 81K of this stays in RAM when you remove the Springboard. The camera app also manages the photos taken, which are stored in RAM.

TODD GITLIN IN CONVERSATION
In books such as Inside Prime Time, The Sixties, and The Twilight of Common Dreams, Todd Gitlin examines social movements, and analyzes the role of the mass media in shaping U.S. political culture. A thoughtful partisan of the New Left, he is increasingly distressed by the Left's abandonment of universal principles in favour of "identity politics." In conversation with Jill Eisen , Gitlin discusses how this came to be and what the implications are.
JUSTICE AS SANCTUARY
For most of recorded history, crime has called for restitution rather than retribution. In the ancient world and in pre-modern Europe, those who had wronged someone could seek refuge in a sanctuary from which they could safely propose a settlement. Starting in the 16th century in modern Europe, this right gradually disappeared. Today, criminal justice consists of prosecution and punishment by the state. Dutch jurist Herman Bianchi believes we should return to a settlement-based system of criminal law. In conversation with

University of British Columbia http://www.english.ubc.ca/ English 545: Studies in Canadian Literature: National Fictions ( Erin Hurley) The historical division between politics and culture in national and aesthetic discourses has often been grounded in the presumption that politics is "real" (i.e., it has material consequences) while culture traffics in artifice. In standard literary and dramatic histories concerned with the development of a national literature, drama, or cultural style, cultural production is positioned as a derivative discourse; culture follows and reflects a pre-existing nation, providing it with character, substance, and legitimacy. If the nation can no longer boast a solid purchase on reality, if it too traffics in fictions, then how might this nation-culture relationship be reconfigured? How might that shift revalue cultural production and reshape conceptions of the nation and identity? In order to examine the relationships that obtain between ideas of nation and cultural production, "National Fictions," will use French/Canadian/Québécois cultural production - fiction, theatre, and popular music - as a test case. Our work will focus on three case studies that exemplify a range of investments in particular national/ist fictions and will draw on secondary readings in nation studies from political science, international relations, anthropology, sociology, and postcolonial theory to illuminate the work. We will ask, "How does cultural production position itself vis-à-vis the national construct?" "What are the stakes of writing compelling national fictions for nations without states (like Québec)?" "How might it contribute (or not) to nation-building projects and processes?" Each case study has been the locus for sustained debate on the relationship of cultural production to national production.

[ Author Information Bibliographic Details Kathleen Boone Samuels (1842-1925) of Front Royal, Virginia, penned twenty-five letters to her mother when she was a student at the Woodstock (Virginia) Female Academy in 1860. Clothes formed the major preoccupation of this exuberant teenage girl, who, despite repeated protests to her parents that she was concentrating on her lessons, filled her letters with discussions of the latest fashions and requests for various items of apparel. Her correspondence also sheds light on the curriculum of an antebellum female academy. In 1862, Kathleen became the bride of Green Berry Samuels, a young Confederate officer. This volume includes one letter from Kathleen to her husband, written after the end of the Civil War in 1865, urging him to obtain his release from prison and return home to his wife and baby daughter.

Leonidas Hubbard, Jr.
Leonidas Hubbard, Jr. was born on July 12, 1872 to Leonidas Hubbard and Ellen Van der Voort in rural Michigan. He was raised on a farm and, thus, from an early age was exposed to the outdoors he hunted, fished and went on wilderness hikes. At the age of sixteen he entered Angola (Indiana) Normal School. While attending Angola, Hubbard became a member of the Church of Christ and remained a devout Christian throughout his life. In 1893, Hubbard entered the University of Michigan at Ann Arbour. He was active in sports and various societies and campus activities including the school newspaper. His experience with the university press encouraged him to pursue a career in journalism. After his graduation in 1897, Hubbard found employment with a Detroit evening newspaper. He spent two years on its staff, covering mostly state politics in Lansing, Michigan's capital.
In 1899, Hubbard decided to move to New York, searching for greater journalistic recognition and opportunity. He struggled to find work, but eventually secured a position with the Daily News. While working with this paper, Hubbard also made contributions to the Saturday Evening Post. However, in May 1900, Hubbard contracted typhoid fever and lost his positions at both newspapers. During his recovery at the Staten Island Hospital he meet his future wife Mina Benson, a nurse assigned to care for him during his recovery. The couple were married in a small church in New York City on January 31, 1901.
