Elbert Hubbard Quotes
Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915)
The recipe for perpetual ignorance is: be satisfied with your opinions and content with your knowledge. The secret of success is this: there is no secret of success. Folks who never do any more than they are paid for, never get paid for any more than they do. One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man. To avoid criticism, do nothing, say nothing, be nothing. If you can’t answer a man’s argument, all is not lost; you can still call him vile names. An idea that is not dangerous is unworthy to be called an idea at all. A man is as good as he has to be, and a woman as bad as she dares. I would rather be able to appreciate things I can not have than to have things I am not able to appreciate. If you want work well done, select a busy man; the other kind has no time. Everything comes too late for those who only wait. Genius may have its limitations, but stupidity is not thus handicapped. Thoroughness characterizes all successful men. Genius is the art of taking infinite pains. All great achievement has been characterized by extreme care, infinite painstaking, even to the minutest detail.

After meeting William Morris , and visiting Morris' Kelmscott Press in 1894, Elbert Hubbard returned home to establish the Roycroft Press at East Aurora, NY in 1895. They produced books having high-relief molded leather or limp chamois covers, and elaborately decorated books, metalwork, and decorative items Mission-style chairs and tables bearing the Roycroft mark were first mentioned in the 1901 catalog. They later expanded their furniture offerings to include desks, lamps, library tables, picture frames, chest of drawers, serving tables and bedroom sets. The hardware was often copper or brass that was handcrafted in the shops. Although Hubbard and his wife died with the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, the Roycroft establishment continued successfully for number of years thereafter. As publisher and writer for the Philistine (1895-1915) he penned the inspirational Message to Garcia (1899) which is still used in business schools today.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Elbert Hubbard (1859-1915), author, publicist, and merchandiser, was born in Bloomington, Illinois, the son of Dr. Silas and Juliana Frances (Read) Hubbard. In his twenties he was involved in merchandising in Chicago, and developed some promotional schemes like offering premiums to encourage sales. Hubbard came under the Arts and Crafts influence of William Morris, and developed the Roycroft Shop at East Aurora, New York, which employed as many as five hundred workers. One product was deluxe editions of classic books, printed in a distinctive style. Hubbard was also a profific writer. He was not afraid to be frankly inspirational. He wrote most of the material in his monthly, The Philistine, including in each issue "A Little Journey to the Home of" some well-known person. His best-known story was "A Message to Garcia," set in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, about a man who was given a job to do and got it done under extreme difficulty without asking questions or complaining. (It was written at the suggestion of a dissatisfied employer.)

Soon Roycroft became synonymous with high quality and innovative artistry Luck is tenacity of purpose ," he said. Organized religion, being founded on superstition, is, perforce, not scientific. And all that which is not scientific that is, truthful must be bolstered up by force, fear and falsehood. Thus we always find slavery and organized religion going hand in hand.
Elbert Hubbard , from Ira D. Cardiff, What Great Men Think of Religion, quoted from James A. Haught , ed., 2000 Years of Disbelief Theology, by diverting the attention of men from this life to another, and by endeavoring to coerce all men into one religion, constantly preaching that this world is full of misery, but the next world would be beautiful or not, as the case may be has forced on men the thought of fear where otherwise there might have been the happy abandon of nature.
Elbert Hubbard , from Ira D. Cardiff, What Great Men Think of Religion, quoted from James A. Haught , ed., 2000 Years of Disbelief Martyrs and persecutors are the same type of man. As to which is the persecutor and which the martyr, this is only a question of transient power.

    Personal "Credo"
    - I believe in the Motherhood of God. - I believe in the Blessed Trinity of Father, Mother and Child. - I believe that God is here, and that we are as near Him now as ever we shall be. - I do not believe He started this world-a going and went away and left it to run by itself. - I believe in the sacredness of the human body, this transient dwelling place of a living soul, - - And so I deem it the duty of every man and every woman to keep his or her body beautiful through right thinking and right living. - I believe that the love of man for woman, and the love of woman for man is holy; - - And that this love in all its promptings is as much an emanation of the Divine Spirit as man's love for God, or the most daring hazards of the human mind. - I believe in salvation through economic, social, and spiritual freedom.

Larkin and Co. in Buffalo, but wasn't satisfied with his life. So in 1892, he sold his interests in the company and briefly enrolled at Harvard. Disenchanted, he quickly dropped out and set off on a walking tour of England. He briefly met William Morris and became enamored of Morris' Arts-and-Crafts Kelmscott Press. Buffalo, New York I
n 19th century England, the Arts and Crafts movement was an outraged response to the Industrial Revolution, which was threatening time-honored manual crafts with extinction. The movement was also one of social and political reform.
In America, the Arts and Crafts movement, 1890-1920 - often referred to as the Craftsman movement - expressed dissatisfaction that industrialization had failed to provide a decent environment for working people and at the same time resulted in shoddy mass-produced goods. It encouraged simple honest design with a regard for the integrity of the material employed.
The movement took hold on both coasts and in the Middle West. From New York, designer and furniture manufacturer Gustav Stickley published "The Craftsman," and Elbert Hubbard founded the Roycroft Movement.
