William Dean Howells
William Dean Howells was born on March 1st, 1837 in Martinsville, Ohio, the son of Mary Dean Howells and William Cooper Howells. His father was both a printer and a publisher, and Howells himself worked as a typesetter and a printer’s apprentice. A self-educated man, Howells studied and read Spanish, French, Latin, and German. He became a reporter for the Ohio State Journal The Cincinnati Gazette , and The Sentinel , contributing poems and reviews to The Atlantic Monthly Venetian Life (1866) and Italian Journey (1867), when published, brought Howells recognition, but his novels, Their Wedding Journey (1872) and The Lady of the Aroostook (1879), were published with little notice. It was A Modern Instance (1882) that turned Howell into a well-respected novelist. The Rise of Silas Lapham (1885) cemented that reputation. Howells wrote over fifty novels, including: The Undiscovered Country A Traveler from Altruria The Day of Their Wedding The Story of a Play Letters Home Editha (1905), and

Howells, William Dean Howells, William Dean, , American novelist, critic, and editor, b. Martins Ferry, Ohio. Both in his own novels and in his critical writing, Howells was a champion of realism in American literature. His education was gained by voracious reading as he worked for his father, a town printer in various small towns in Ohio. Howells early turned to writing and to editorial work on the Ohio State Journal Venetian Life (1866) and Italian Journey (1867), brought recognition. After his return to the United States in 1865, he worked for various periodicals; he was associated with the Atlantic Monthly Harper's Magazine. His first novels, Their Wedding Journey The Lady of the Aroostook (1879), and others, were moralistic comedies of manners that aroused only mild interest. However, when he turned to realism with A Modern Instance (1882) and The Rise of Silas Lapham (1885), he became a leading novelist. In these two books, which are regarded as his major achievements, Howells portrayed with minute detail characters attempting to solve lifelike problems, often arising from social distinctions. His unromantic love story

Editha
by William Dean Howells
THE air was thick with the war feeling, like the electricity of a storm which had not yet burst. Editha sat looking out into the hot spring afternoon, with her lips parted, and panting with the intensity of the question whether she could let him go. She had decided that she could not let him stay, when she saw him at the end of the still leafless avenue, making slowly up towards the house, with his head down and his figure relaxed. She ran impatiently out on the veranda, to the edge of the steps, and imperatively demanded greater haste of him with her will before she called aloud to him: "George!" He had quickened his pace in mystical response to her mystical urgence, before he could have heard her; now he looked up and answered, "Well?" "Oh, how united we are!" she exulted, and then she swooped down the steps to him, "What is it?" she cried. "It's war," he said. and he pulled her up to him and kissed her. She kissed him back intensely, but irrelevantly, as to their passion, and uttered from deep in her throat. "How glorious!"

Howells' critical essays on the works of such realistic European writers as Tolstoy, Zola, and Ibsen helped to mold American taste, and he was a literary mentor of Mark Twain, Hamlin Garland, Thorstein Veblen, and Stephen Crane. He himself became more and more concerned with social conflict and the problem of industrialization. Socialist thought is apparent in his novels

The Rise of Silas Lapham (1885), a novel about a self-made Boston manufacturer and his family and the testing of their values. This novel includes such common and popular ingredients of fiction as a rags-to-riches career, romantic love, and financial emergencies; but it avoids Romantic melodrama and suggests the decent good sense of realistic life that American Realism and Howells did much to encourage. Is it the shrewd October wind
Brings the tears into her eyes?
Does it blow so strong that she must fetch
Her breath in sudden sighs?
Gone October Out of the fragrant heart of bloom, The bobolinks are singing; Out of the fragrant heart of bloom The apple-tree whispers to the room, "Why art thou but a nest of gloom While the bobolinks are singing?" The Bobolinks are Singing Bobolinks The little wind that hardly shook The silver of the sleeping brook Blew the gold hair about her eyes, A mystery of mysteries.
