To: UI Special Collections Emerson Hough's American West CAROLE M. JOHNSON From Books at Iowa 21 (November 1974)
In 1938 Wallace Stegner wrote As a working journalist, The Covered Wagon (1922) and North of 36 (1923), were the culmination of his efforts to identify the West with the ideals of the American past. Though a midwesterner, Idylls of the King ; and the battle scenes in the Biblical Book of Kings provided a natural transition to Ivanhoe Historical Collections of the Great West
Hough graduated with two other pupils from the local high school at Newton, Iowa, in 1875, and after teaching in a country school for one term, he entered The University of Iowa in 1876. His university career was an eventful one in which he played on the football team, edited the college newspaper, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1880. Hough's father urged his son to study law, partly out of his own failure in that ambition for himself; but reluctant to enter the legal profession, Hough spent some time as a surveyor in a civil engineering party before deciding to read law. As a diversion from his studies he began to write sketches on the outdoors and on hunting for publication in eastern magazines. His first published article, "Far From the Madding Crowd," which appeared in Forest and Stream (August 17, 1882), revealed a romantic primitivism which was to pervade his later work: "There is no more natural or effective way to rest," he wrote, "than to merge for a time the artificial man into the natural; to sink civilized training in the instincts given us by our fathers, the savages . . ."

Halcyone
In Greek myth, the daughter of Aeolus (god the winds), and wife of Ceyx. Halcyone threw herself into the sea when her husband drowned. Out of pity, the gods changed the pair into kingfishers. OAS_AD('Top'); THE NAME AND FAMILY OF HOUGH (HUFF) IN ENGLAND AND AMERICA The name of Huff or Hough, which in England are variants of the same name, is said to have been derived from the residence of its first bearers at or near a "haugh or "hough", that is, a hill or mound. It is found on the ancient English and early American records in the various forms of Haugh, Haughe, Hauf, Haufe, Hauffe, Hauff, Hufe, Huf, Huffe, Huff, Houfe, Houf, Houffe, Houff, Hoghe, Hogh, Houghe, Hough, and others, of which the two forms mentioned at the beginning of this article are those most generally found in America today. Families bearing this name were to be found at early dates in the English Counties of Chester, York, Glouster, Lancaster, Lincoln, and Warwick; as well as in the city and vicinity of London. Families mentioned were for the most part, of the landed gentry of Great Britain. One of the earliest known records of the family In England was that of one Richard del Hogh or Hough of Cheshire about the middle of the thirteenth century, and certainly prior to the year 1272A.D. Evidences indicate that he waz the father of Thomas, Hugh, Richard, and Lettice, although complete records to substantiate this are not available.
