Pelican Creek, Wm. H. Jackson, 1871 The above photo was taken by William Henry Jackson as a part of the Hayden Expedition of 1871. For more on the founding of Yellowstone as a park, see discussion of the Hayden Expedition . In his official journal Hayden noted the basis for the naming of Pelican Creek. The Creek, which flows out of the north end of Lake Yellowstone, was named in 1864 by a group of prospectors led by Adam "Horn" Miller. Supposedly, John C. Davis, seeking his evening repast mistakingly shot a pelican thinking it to be a goose. The "goose" came down in the water requiring Davis to swim out to get it and bring it to shore. Even after defeathering and skinning, however, the pelican proved to be unedible and was hung in a tree to be found by Miller. Miller was one of the developers of Cooke City, Mt., named after Jay Cooke, president of the Northern Pacific Railroad, in the futile hope that Cooke would run a spur line to the city. Science at Heart's Desire
probably from Heart's Desire : the story of a contented town,
certain peculiar citizens, and two fortunate lovers
by Emerson Hough
"T HAT OLD RAILROAD LL shore bust me up a heap if it ever does git in here," remarked Tom Osby one morning in the forum of Whiteman's corral, where the accustomed group was sitting in the sun, waiting for some one to volunteer as Homer for the day. There was little to do but listen to story telling, for Tom Osby dwelt in the tents of Kedar, delaying departure on his accustomed trip to Vegas. No one spoke. All present were trying to imagine how Heart's Desire would seem with a railroad train each day. "Things'll be some different in them days, mebbe so." Tom recrossed his legs with well-considered deliberation. "There's a heap of things different already from what they used to be when I first hit the cow range," said Curly. "The whole country's changed, and it ain't changed for the better, either. Grass is longer, and horns is shorter, and men is triflin'er. Since the Yankees has got west of the Missouri River, a ranch foreman ain't allowed to run his own brandin' iron any more, and that takes more'n half the poetry out of the cow business, don't it, Mac?" This to McKinney, who was nearly asleep. "What's it all about, Curly?" drawled Dan Anderson. "You can't tell a story worth a cent." Curly paid no attention to him.

The Iowa Authors Collection "In 1945 the University of Iowa Library entrusted to one of its long-time librarians, Grace Wormer, the task of forming a special collection of books written by Iowa authors," wrote Frank Paluka in Iowa Authors: A Bio-bibliography of Sixty Native Writers (Iowa City: Friends of the University of Iowa Libraries, 1967). "An Iowa author, for the purpose of this collection, was considered to be any writer born in the state or definitely associated with Iowa who had written at least one published book. For non-native writers, a definite association with the state was usually interpreted to mean a residence in Iowa of twenty years or more." By 1967, the collection included the work of more than 800 writers. A 1993 article in by Robert McCown in Books at Iowa gives more details on the history of the collection.

The subsequent price inflation and bubble in Mississippi Company shares are well known a a classic case of financial mania, comparable to the Dutch tulip mania and the South Sea Bubble in England. The collapse of the bubble is the climax of the novel One of the best-selling fictional works of 1902. Emerson Hough (1857-1923) taught school before studying law at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1880. Hough was admitted to the bar in 1882 and practiced law at White Oaks, New Mexico, but found it had no appeal for him. He turned to a literary career by taking camping trips and writing about them for publication. His body of work eventually included 27 novels and hundreds of short stories and articles. Hough's early works included The Singing Mouse Stories , for children, in 1895 and the nonfiction The Story of the Cowboy in 1897. He had his first major success in 1902 with the novel

E-M N-Z 26. EGGLESTON, GEORGE CARY, 1839-1911. Long Knives; A romance based loosely on the exploits of George Rogers Clark in the Kentucky and Illinois territories Long Knives focuses on Tom Harrod and his friends, Ike Todd, Sim Crane, and Hawk Camden, who join Clark in his history-making battles for control of the west. With the odds stacked against them, Clark and his men depend heavily on the elements of speed, surprise, and fear in conquering Kaskaskia and Vincennes and in making peace with the Indians. The four friends join Clark at Corn Island in the Ohio River before the march on Kaskaskia, and serve faithfully as scouts, hunters, envoys, and soldiers until the fate of the Illinois territory is secure. Eggleston devotes little energy to the development of his characters, choosing instead to go into great detail describing and interpreting actions and historic events. Hence, Long Knives becomes an action novel generously interspersed with tedious explanations of motives and alternatives. 27. ELLIS, EDWARD SYLVESTER, 1840-1916.
