Harry Houdini ( 1874 - 1926 ) By Carmina Casilli Harry Houdini was the first man to fly an airplane in Australia. Harry bought an air plane called a Voisin. He hired a machanic, packed all his things he needed and sailed to Australia on board a steam ship. On March 18, 1910, Harry drove the plane slowly around the field, and after a few hops into the air, Harry pointed the plane on to the field. He accelerated the plane forward with increasing speed until te plane went up the air. On July 17, 1913, Harry was very much affected emotionally by the death of his mother, Cecilia. She died whille Harry was away in Europe doing his magic shows. Harry loved his mother very much, and provided his full support until her dying day. In 1894 Harry married Beatrice Raymond, who belonged to a Catholic family. For Bess and Harry it was love at first sight, so they got married two weeks after they met though they were at their young age. Bess's mother was not happy about the marriage because Harry was a Jewish. Harry and Bess had been very good couple. Harry and Bess lived together until the day Harry died. Harry Houdini was famous because he was a magician who could escape from any handcuffs, chains, jailcells, or locks ever invented! He was the first person to fly a plane in Australia, and he was a talented movie star who was recognized around the world!

Harry Houdini was born "Erik Weisz" on March 24, 1874, at Buda-Pest, capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His family and he moved to the U.S. in 1878. Aside from his stupendous (and very well-known) career as a magician, Houdini also is credited with making the first flight of a heavier-than-air machine (a Voisin biplane) in Australia, on March 18, 1910, at Digger's Rest, near Melbourne.

March 24 ~  Magical Things Houdini: Master of Illusion
"The u n i v e r s e is f u l l of magical things, patiently waiting for our w i t s to grow sharper." ~ Eden Phillpots A man full of magic Harry Houdini At first a card-trick performer, by 1900 Houdini developed an escape act. The 5'5" artist trained hard to develop stamina and dexterity until he was able to escape from any restraint chains, handcuffs, prison cells, padlocked underwater boxes. Anything. He became a star. A reviewer called him "probably the most mysterious and wonderful entertainer the world has ever seen." Self-confident with a flair for exaggeration, Houdini made things appear larger than life, creating things magical and teaching the amazing transforming power of the imagination . "I have tried through many sleepless nights to invent schemes to make an audience appreciate some worthy effort of mine." Of Houdini, contemporary illusionist David Copperfield said, "his message was that every obstacle could be overcome. The escapes were a metaphor that gave people hope ."

As Houdini, the famed magician, was shackled and then lowered into the water-filled Chinese Torture Cell, the audience, gazing through the glass front illusion at the immersed man (poster right), sat transfixed knowing that, unless escape was possible within precious minutes, certain death by drowning would result. In truth, there were two Houdinis, Harry Houdini, the performer as the world saw him, and Bro. Ehrich (Eric) Weiss, the man and Freemason, a personality obscured from view by the public persona. Born in Budapest on March 24, 1874, he accompanied his family to America. The reasons for the family's departure remain cloudy, although anti-Semitism undoubtedly played a major role. Harry Houdini was a complex personality, a romantic ever willing to embellish his rather mundane and plain beginnings. Throughout his life, there are clear instances where he invented and/or embellished events to enhance both his personal and professional image, having an incessant need to add color to events so that there might be an aura of mystery and glamour involved. With Hungarian friends in Appleton, Wisconsin, Houdini's father accepted a Rabbi's position there. Unfortunately, being an Old World conservative, he was unable to adapt to more liberal American ideas, and the family relocated, first to Milwaukee, and then to New York. The family was always in need of money, so young Eric took a variety of odd jobs to help out. With virtually no formal education, he left home at age 12 to make his fortune, but after a year or two, he relocated to New York where his family still lived.

    "The Roaring Twenties"
As the world bid farewell to the 1910's, it was introduced to a decade that would be unlike any other. Separating two world wars, the 1920's followed events such as the sinking of the Titanic (1912), the invention of stainless steel (1913), and the completion of the Panama Canal (1914). The Roaring Twenties would have their own share of excitement and wonder as well - the Treaty of Versailles ended World War I, penicillin was discovered, and the Sultan of Swat hit 60 home runs. These events were and still are significant, but they reflect only a small portion of the full story. After his death at the age of 52, on Halloween 1926, Houdini's wife Bess attempted to communicate with Houdini's spirit through mediums, using a secret code the couple had prearranged. Shown here with a framed photograph of him in chains is an "Authentic Key from the Personal Collection of the Great Harry Houdini." Stamped "CORBIN. As a boy, Houdini began to work as a trapeze artist, then as an illusionist. In 1900 his popularity became international when he packed London's Alhambra Theater night after night. Hailed as 'the world's greatest magician', he became the highest-paid performer in the entertainment world and his name became a synonym for a 'magician'. He founded the Society of American Magicians. Crowds thrilled at his many feats, which ranged from making an elephant disappear from the stage to releasing himself from a straitjacket while hanging 25 meters up in the air. In the Jewish community, he organized the Rabbis' Sons Theatrical Benevolent Association. Selected Bibliography: Harold KELLOCK: Houdini, his life-story . Harry Houdini Magician
    Biography:
Harry Houdini was born on April 6, 1874 and died in Detroit of peritonitis, which was brought on by an unexpected blow to the abdomen, on October 31, 1926. He was the fifth child of Rabbi Mayer Samuel Weiss and Cecilia Steiner of Budapest.
When his parents emigrated to Appleton, Houdini was born to the name Ehrich. He was a magician and author. In his early career as a magician, he changed his name to Harry Houdini. Opportunities for a Jewish scholar in Wisconsin were scarce, so he had to contribute to his family income at a very early age. At the age of twelve, Houdini ran away to New York, and very soon after that his family moved also to New York. After the death of his father, Houdini contributed a lot to his family by working odd jobs.
His greatest interest was always magic, which he entertained before his father's death. Soon Houdini and his brother Theodore, known as Hardeen, had a partnership which lasted until Houdini got married to Wilhelmina Rahner, who was eventually named Beatrice Houdini and also became her husband's assistant. The Houdini's mostly appeared in circuses and small shows, doing a variety of tricks. With his remarkable skill, Houdini attracted large crowds. Soon he escaped Scotland Yards and went on a tour which lasted him four years and took him around the Continent.
Upon his return to the U.S. he gained a lot of publicity. In all theaters he was considered a master. His most famous tricks were used because of his mechanical skill. He was able to escape from locks, boxes, chains, handcuffs, etc. He would escape with devices people could not see or he would cove
