Harry Houdini is pictured in a portrait signed by him the year he died (1926), and [below] in an archival 1921 film press shot. Accompanying the portrait are Houdini's classic "exposé" books "Miracle Workers and their Methods" , and "The UnMasking of Robert Houdin" , with Houdini's inscription, which states his opinion on his historical writing: "Best wishes from the author of this first authentic history of magic and magicians — Harry Houdini." These photographic portraits and artifacts juxtapose the seeming opposite characteristics of intellectual and physical prowess which combined to characterize Houdini's brilliance: his ability to merge thought and action in a manner that never failed to captivate public attention.

March 24 ~  Key That Sets Me Free Houdini: Master of Illusion
M y mind is the k e y that s e t s me free ~ Harry Houdini A man who dedicated his life to inspiring freedom of the mind, Harry Houdini (1874-1926), the world's most famous escape artist and illusionist, was born Ehrich Weiss on this day in Budapest, Hungary. Searching for a better life, his family moved to the U.S. in 1878. He changed his name to honor Jean-Eugene Robert-Houdin, considered the father of modern magic. At first a card-trick performer, by 1900 Houdini developed his first escape act. "Treat me," he once advised, "as you would the most dangerous of the criminal insane." The 5'5" artist trained hard to develop physical stamina and dexterity. He was able to escape from any restraint chains, handcuffs, prison cells, padlocked underwater boxes. Anything. He dazzled. He amazed. He became an international star. A reviewer called him "the most mysterious and wonderful entertainer the world has ever seen." Self-confident with a flair for exaggeration, Houdini made things appear larger than life, creating things magical and teaching the amazing transforming power of the imagination "I have tried through many sleepless nights to invent schemes to make an audience appreciate some worthy effort of mine," he said and bequeathed his library of magic to the Library of Congress

Titanic Disaster Houdini (1874-1926) Houdini was born Ehrich Weiss on March 24, 1874 in Budapest, Hungary. His family emigrated to the United States while he was an infant, and his father became the first rabbi in Appleton, Wisconsin. They later moved to Milwaukee, and eventually settled in New York. Young Ehrich's life was transformed after he learned his first trick (the vanishing quarter). At the age of 17, he changed his name to Harry Houdini and began performing in medicine shows, circuses, theaters, etc. When 100,000 people watched "The King of Handcuffs" wriggle free while hanging from a building in 1916, a newspaper reported that this was "the biggest crowd ever assembled in Washington at one place except for the inauguration of the President." One of Houdini's most spectacular illusions was the "Vanishing Elephant," in which the pachyderm lumbered on to the stage and walked straight into a large cabinet. Almost simultaneously the cabinet's walls would be pulled back and the elephant had disappeared. Houdini said "Even the elephant does not know how it is done."

. TLS: "Houdini" [Brooklyn, N.Y.], 1917 Labor Day. To Edwin Fay Rice, Curator, Boston Public Library. In full: "Kit Clarke just came in when your letter arrived and we both had a laugh at the 'Unsavory memory' item of Tom Allyne. Hope you will get on the trail, for it will complete the story. Best wishes you all sincerely yours semper idem." Postscript: "Kit Clarke sends regards and best wishes." With original stamped postmarked envelope. "Semper idem" means "always the same" in Latin. When America entered WWI five months earlier, Houdini (1874-1926) tried to enlist in the army but was rejected as being too old at age 43. Unable to fight, Houdini preformed free shows for servicemen, during which he would produce five-dollar gold pieces from the air and toss them to the audience. Houdini was a great collector, with extensive collections of locks, magic memorabilia, autographs, historical items and especially, books. Houdini collected so many books that he hired a full-time librarian to care for them, and traveled with hundreds at a time. EDWIN FAY RICE Curator of the Boston Public Library, had an ongoing correspondence with Houdini. He was a magician, book collector and friend and did research for Houdini. Rice wrote articles about magic that were published in "M-U-M", the periodical for the Society of American Magicians, whose motto was "Magic-Unity-Might". In June 1917, three months before this letter was written, Houdini was elected National President of the Society of American Magicians, a position he held until his death in 1926.

His parents brought him to the United States in his infancy, and they settled in Appleton, Wisconsin. He took his professional surname from that of the French magician Jean Eug¨ne Robert-Houdin. Houdini began his career in 1882 as a trapeze performer. Subsequently he became world famous for his performances of feats of magic. He showed astounding ability in extricating himself from handcuffs, ropes, locked trunks, and bonds of any sort. At one time he had himself tied and then locked in a packing case, which was bound with steel tape and dropped into the harbor off the Battery in New York City. Houdini appeared on the surface of the water in 59 seconds.

s Houdini, the famed magician, was shackled and then lowered into the water-filled Chinese Torture Cell, the audience, gazing through the glass front illusion at the immersed man (poster below), sat transfixed knowing that, unless escape was possible within precious minutes, certain death by drowning would result.
His very name conjures up visions of magical miracles, thrilling escapes and death-defying stunts. While Houdini (1874-1926) died three quarters of a century ago, the average person still thinks of him when asked to name a famous magician.
In truth, there were two Houdinis, Harry Houdini, the performer as the world saw him, and Bro. Ehrich (Eric) Weiss, the man and Freemason, a personality obscured from view by the public persona. Born in Budapest on March 24, 1874, he accompanied his family to America. The reasons for the family's departure remain cloudy, although anti-Semitism undoubtedly played a major role. Harry Houdini was a complex personality, a romantic ever willing to embellish his rather mundane and plain beginnings. Throughout his life, there are clear instances where he invented and/or embellished events to enhance both his personal and professional image, having an incessant need to add color to events so that there might be an aura of mystery and glamour involved.
