Harry Houdini By Elise Ritter Harry Houdini (1874-1926) is considered the greatest escape artist of all time. His theatrical acts demonstrated mastery over seemingly impossible odds. Houdini would bind himself with handcuffs, chains, ropes or a straitjacket, and amaze his audiences by always finding a way out of them. Houdini was born Erich Weiss on March 24, 1874 in Budapest, Hungary, the son of a rabbi who emigrated with his family to America, in search of a better life. What he found instead was failure and poverty. The family initially settled in Wisconsin, but then moved to New York City. In 1892, his father died, and Harry pursued a career in magic to help support his siblings and beloved mother. He had taken the name "Harry Houdini" after Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin, the French father of modern magic. A year later he married diminutive 18-year-old Wilhelmina Beatrice Rahner, "Bess," who became his assistant. Houdini got his big break when a prosperous theater manager saw his handcuff escape act in 1899, and scheduled him for extended bookings in the United States and abroad. For the next five years Houdini performed in Europe, gaining international acclaim. Upon his return to America, he performed the trick of escaping from the Washington, D.C., jail that had housed the assassin of President James A. Garfield.

Houdini was born Ehrich Weiss on March 24, 1874 in Budapest , Hungary. His family emigrated to the United States while he was an infant, and his father became the first rabbi in Appleton, Wisconsin. They later moved to Milwaukee, and eventually settled in New York. Young Ehrich's life was transformed after he learned his first trick (the vanishing quarter). At the age of 17, he changed his name to Harry Houdini and began performing in medicine shows, circuses, theaters, etc. When 100,000 people watched "The King of Handcuffs" wriggle free while hanging from a building in 1916, a newspaper reported that this was "the biggest crowd ever assembled in Washington at one place except for the inauguration of the President." One of Houdini's most spectacular illusions was the "Vanishing Elephant," in which the pachyderm lumbered on to the stage and walked straight into a large cabinet. Almost simultaneously the cabinet's walls would be pulled back and the elephant had disappeared. Houdini said "Even the elephant does not know how it is done." Four years after the Wright Brothers flew the first practical airplane, Houdini bought a French plane and made his first flight. And just 5 months later, on March 16, 1910, he became the first person to make a successful flight in Australia!

(11 K'an (Corn) / 12 Uo - 24/260 - 12.19.10.4.4) Houdini, Harry
American magician known for his escapes from chains, handcuffs, straitjackets, and padlocked containers. Houdini, Harry magic . He was able to free himself from handcuffs, ropes, locked trunks, and many types of bonds. Houdini attributed his magic to natural, physical effects and explained how many of his tricks were performed. His writings include Miracle Mongers and Their Methods (1920) and A Magician Among the Spirits (1924). Theater and Film, "The Great Houdini" gains wide publicity by executing an escape from London's Scotland Yard, becomes a main attraction at London's Alhambra Theatre, and begins a 4-year tour of the Continent. U.S. escape artist Ehrich Weiss, 26, has adopted the name Houdini from the French magician Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin; having studied Robert-Houdin's work, his book The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin in 1908 will show that the Frenchman's dexterity was much exaggerated, and he will far surpass Robert-Houdin's reputation with feats such as having himself shackled in irons, locked into a roped and weighted box, dropped overboard from a boat, and emerging with a smile before baffled audiences.

Comptons 1996...
HOUDINI, Harry (1874-1926). Every Halloween fans of Harry Houdini gather in Appleton, Wis. (which he claimed as his birthplace), and in Chicago where his ashes were scattered in a Jackson Park lagoon in an attempt to contact his spirit. This ongoing devotion is a testimony to the career and personality of the 20th century's most famous magician. Houdini gained international renown for performances in which he released himself from ropes, handcuffs, submerged trunks, and other confinements.
Houdini was born Erik Weisz in Budapest, Hungary (not in Wisconsin), on March 24, 1874. He took his stage name from the French magician Jean-Eugene Robert-Houdin. As a youth Houdini was a circus acrobat and trapeze performer. He then turned to magic and appeared in vaudeville houses and other showplaces. After immigrating to the United States he met the producer Martin Beck who persuaded him to specialize in escapes. Houdini's wife, Wilhelmina Rahner (who took the name Beatrice Houdini), served as his assistant in performances.

Masons and Magicians
In the world of professional stage magic, few names resonate with such acclaim as Harry Keller, Howard Thurston, Harry Houdini, Charles Carter, and Harry Blackstone, Sr. In addition to being brothers in the fraternity of American magicians, each was also an active Freemason. Nearly amazing as the magic acts these great illusionists are famous for is the fact that all of the great magicians made time in their busy lives for Freemasonry: Despite the extensive travel entailed in their careers and all the allurements to the vices of the world, each recognized the value of the Masonic brotherhood. An amusing anecdote related to Bro. Keller's Masonic membership was when he was shipwrecked in the Bay of Biscay and his Blue Lodge diploma went to the bottom of the sea. It was later recovered by divers who brought up baggage from the sunken steamer. Bro. Keller later remarked it had been viewed by Grand Master Neptune and returned. Bro. Howard Thurston (1869-1936) was initiated in Manitou Lodge No. 106, New York City, on July 22, 1907. He received the 32° in New York City on July 10, 1910, and later became a Noble of New York's Mecca Shrine Temple (Mecca is the first and oldest Shrine Temple, having been established in 1871 by actor Bro. William J. "Billy" Florence, Bro. Dr. Walter M. Fleming, and others). During Thurston's stage show, he was known to say, "pronounce the magic word ‘Hiram Abif’ and the rooster and the duck will change places." Through this patter, he prepared his audience to be amazed and, also let his Masonic Brothers know that a fellow Freemason was on the stage.
