DIGITAL BIBLIOPHILES
Raffles: The Gentleman Thief
by the Digital Bookworm, R. Hicks
Greetings Digital Bibliophiles! Your Digital Bookworm was lost plain old lost amidst digital aisles of famous authors and stacks of digital novels. Naturally, I was looking for something special for you for this week. When you are lost is when you often find a true treasure, a real jewel so to speak. Hmm jewel might have been poor choice of words given the line of work of the charming rogues who are the focus of this week's combination of short stories and novels.
Ernest William (Willie) Hornung - 1866-1921
Amateur Cracksman - 1899
Amateur Cracksman introduces Raffles, E.W. Hornung's immensely popular gentleman thief. These short stories detail the adventures of the fictional jewel thief who has been the model for many charming rogues. The stories are set in London in the 1890s. Amateur Cracksman also introduces Harry "Bunny" Manders, an amiable young-man-about-town, who finds that his gambling debts are ruining him. In need, he turns to Raffles. The discovery that his hero is a successful crook at first stuns Bunny. Then, returning from helping him raid a jeweler's shop, shock turns to admiration for a man who can quote Keats during the middle of what would normally be a tension-charged situation.
Raffles: Further Adventures of the Amateur Cracksman - 1901
In this book, we see more of the sharp wit and steely nerve first on display in The Amateur Cracksman. Raffles remains Holmes' polar opposite, a foil for great detectives and a man with all the immoral charms of a hero-thief plus a remarkable ability at cricket. Raffles is the godson of Robin Hood, quite possibly the model for Cary Grant in To Catch a Thief and I'd also say the inspiration for Leslie Charteris' The Saint. As the great reinvention of the trickster for the 20th century, Raffles convinces readers to throw away their scruples and follow along for wit, bold adventures and thrilling suspense.
