122. A Sea Change: The Life And Art Of Winslow Homer
Short article from Smithsonian Magazine.
http://smithsonianmag.si.edu/smithsonian/issues95/oct95/homer.html
Winslow Homer, the quintessential American artist By the time he was in his mid-40s, a decade after the end of the Civil War, Winslow Homer was already successful as a painter. His reputation had been firmly established with masterpieces such as Prisoners from the Front (1866), hailed by the New York Evening Post as "a complete summation of the most vital facts of the Civil War," and The Carnival (1877), one of a series in which he documented the lives of the newly freed blacks in Petersburg, Virginia. Yet, from the late 1870s on, Winslow Homer seemed to change in a fundamental way. Some scholars speculate that there was a failed romance that caused his withdrawal from society. In any case, this great painter of the American scene did not lose the edge when it came to the probity and drama of his art. Eventually moving to the coast of Maine, he limited his socializing to occasional trips to town to pick up his mail. In works such as Fox Hunt (1893) and Right and Left (1909), Homer dealt with profound issues of existence, while in his paintings of the pounding surf of the Maine coast he brought nature to center stage. Now, these works and other masterpieces by Winslow Homer are included in a major retrospective that opens at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., on October 15, where it will continue until January 28, 1996. It will then travel to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (February 21 to May 26, 1996), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (June 20 to September 22, 1996).

B ecause the facts of Homer's life when he was born or died, where he lived, who he was remain unknown and shall most likely never be known, many scholars have doubted the existence of a "Homer" and point to his texts as the work of a collection of authors over a long period of time. This criticism stems from a disbelief that epics such as The Iliad and The Odyssey could have been formulated, maintained, and transmitted within an oral culture. However, new research on human memory and careful analysis of text reveals evidence that the textual style of each poem does emanate from one author. N o matter who wrote The Iliad and The Odyssey , we can assume that the texts which survive today are not as they were originally composed. Aside from actual textual emendations, the language changed over time, including the introduction of Attic forms and the replacement of archaic terms and usages, all done slowly over time. W hile popular throughout the classical period, The Iliad and The Odyssey lost their popularity during the medieval period until Petrarch received a Homerian manuscript in 1354. Petrarch was probably the first to conceive the idea of a complete translation of Homer into Latin; and it was on his initiative and at his expense that Leontius Pilatus, who was for that purpose installed in Boccaccio's house in Florence, rendered both The Iliad and The Odyssey into Latin prose. Crude and imperfect as these translations were, they acquainted the Italian humanists for the first time with the world of Homer; and they greatly influenced all later translations for more than a hundred years to come. Complete English translations did not appear until the very end of the sixteenth century.

Welcome to Homer, Alaska
When You Invest in Homer
You Invest in a State of Mind
Homer, Alaska, "the Cosmic Hamlet by the Sea," is a small community of 4,500 that affords it's residents a wealth of services, activities and stimulation. The setting is awesome! Homer is nestled on Kachemak Bay (now recognized as a National Estuarine Research Reserve), views of majestic mountains, glaciers and volcanoes.
Homer Real Estate Associates was established here in May 1983. Since then, we have continued with our commitment to sell properties for and to people who appreciate the diversity, energy and magic this community affords.
Homer is the arts capital of Southcentral Alaska and as a result, there are almost a dozen active galleries along with the Arts Council which regularly brings nationally and internationally known performers to town.
And what's even better, is that homes, homesites and investment properties are still very affordable in this very desirable location. There are homes available from $90,000 to $250,000. (There have recently been some $500,000 plus homes built by quality contractors in the area but that is not the norm.)
More people from all over the country are appreciating our quality of life and recreational opportunities, and investment in early retirement and second home properties has dramatically increased over the past five years.

Winslow Homer:
The Obtuse Bard
VISUAL IMAGINATION TRAINING
Winslow Homer recorded an obtuse poetic side in his art. Homer's intensely personal phenomenological side also may function as a device to convey feelings and ideas following a technique suggested by Washington Allston. On The Obtuse Bard Website, visual examples and documented research papers about Homer's obtuse and intensely personal side are available for viewing and reading.
Homer viewed the world influenced by the ideas of those who surrounded him as a child in Cambridge, Massachusetts, especially the ideas of painter/poet Washington Allston , Allston's brother-in-law Richard Henry Dana Sr. , and Allston's friend Benjamin Welles . In the writings of Allston's friends, especially Dana Sr. and Welles, there are discussions encouraging people to literally see "forms of departed friends in the white clouds" as common everyday experiences. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (to whom Allston read his " Lectures on Art "), William Cullen Bryant (a friend of Dana Sr.), and James Russell Lowell (who replaced Longfellow at Harvard) also made references to seeing such illusions in their poetry . For most people today, experience with such images is usually more abstracted, limited to images such as "The Man in the Moon" or the constellations. While we may be familiar with references in literature to people seeing illusions, most of us have little actual experience seeing illusions. In fact, in todays world, we tend to
