Happy New Year!
Posted 151 days ago on January 4, 2004 Happy new years! Mine was spent in front of the TV. Nothing too exciting.
We're finally getting some well needed snow. At least a foot of snow has dropped in the past couple of days. Finally able to get on the mountain.
Can't wait to ride with my new iPod. I love this thing. 20GB, and i'm able to have all of my music on there, with 10GB left over. I love my iPod. I was going to get the 40GB, but I'm glad I didn't. The 20GB is slimmer and lighter than the 40GB. Besides, I don't think I'll be able to fill my 20GB anytime soon. The 40GB would be definite overkill. 0 Comments/Trackbacks

Safari Timeout Bug? Feature?
Posted 169 days ago on December 18, 2003 Another problem I have with Safari, the browser decides it will time itself out, regardless of what the server decides the timeout should be. This causes me huge problems. I have huge scripts I need to run, and I have set up PHP/Apache for longer timeouts. Safari decides that it's best if it decides when things should time out. Great! Is this a "feature" or a bug?

About Counting the Omer n the second day of Passover in ancient times, our ancestors brought the first sheaf of barley (amounting to a measure called "an omer") reaped that season as an offering to God. From that day, they began counting the 49 days to Shavuot, when they would celebrate the beginning of the wheat harvest by offering the loaves made of the first wheat. Even after the Temple was destroyed and offerings were no longer brought, they continued to count the days from Passover to Shavuot in accordance with the biblical injunction (Lev. 23:15). Thus our ancestors linked Passover and Shavuot as occasions for thanking God for the fruits of the field. We, too, thank God for the renewal of life which nature proclaims at this season. However, as Passover and Shavuot acquired historical significance, their linkage through the counting of the intervening days took on new meaning. Passover celebrates the liberation from Egypt, and Shavuot celebrates the receiving of Torah at Sinai. By counting the omer, we symbolically connect liberation with the idea of Torah. Counting the omer is an exercise in the discipline of mindfulness. Counting each of the days of the omer reminds us that all of our days are numbered, and it is our responsibility to make each day count.

What I-355 Means for Homer Glen
Subscribe to the Stop I-355 email list For decades, the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority has promised Will County residents a "quick fix" for its transportation needs - a new 6-lane tollway through the heart of the county. The reality is that the State does not have the funds to build I-355 If built, I-355 will make problems worse by increasing traffic congestion on local roads and increasing commuting times to work. In addition, thousands of acres of open space around Homer Glen will be destroyed and replaced by high-density development. Fortunately, there are alternatives that will meet Homer Glen's transportation needs and preserve the environment.
IMPACTS OF THE I-355 TOLLWAY ON HOMER GLEN
    • More Traffic on Local Roads
I-355 is likely to make traffic worse by clogging roads such with traffic moving to and from the tollway. The Illinois Department of Transportation projects the average daily traffic on 143rd Street to increase from 4,200 to 25,000 if I-355 is built.
      Loss of Open Space
    • If I-355 is build there will be tremendous pressure to construct vast commercial developments around tollway interchanges.

    http://www.crystalinks.com/homer.html
Homer The Illiad and The Odyssey
Apart from the historical writings of ancient Israel, the two major pieces of epic literature in Western civilization are the Iliad and the Odyssey , two books ascribed to the ancient Greek poet Homer. These two works represent a brilliant retelling of myths and legends. For the Greeks of the 7th century BC. however, these books were their history. Their past had been obliterated by the destruction of Mycenaean Civilization. The individual who has traditionally been credited with putting the ancient Greek legends into writing is Homer. About Homer nothing certain is known. The later historian Herodotus (5th century BC said that Homer was a Greek from Ionia on the west coast of Asia Minor. He was perhaps a native of the island of Chios and supposedly lived around 850 BC. Other historians place him closer to 750 BC. Tradition depicts Homer as a blind minstrel wandering from place to place reciting poems that had come down to him from a very old oral tradition. Many scholars believe that the books as they exist today were not written by a single person and were not put in writing until centuries after they took their present form. It is probable that much of the epic tradition of the two books was formed in the 200 or 300 years before an alphabet reached Greece in the 9th or 8th century BC. If so, it is possible that Homer used earlier writings to help him, or he could have dictated his poems to someone else because of his blindness or because he was illiterate.

Search all of Homer Homer was A Greek poet, to whom are attributed the great epics, the Iliad, the story of the siege of Troy, and the Odyssey, the tale of Ulysses's wanderings. The place of his birth is doubtful, probably a Greek colony on the coast of Asia Minor, and his date, once put as far back as 1200 BC, from the style of the poems attributed to him is now thought to be much later. Arguments have long raged over whether his works are in fact by the same hand, or have their origins in the lays of Homer and his followers (Homeridae), and there seems little doubt that the works were originally based on current ballads which were much modified and extended. Of the true Homer, nothing is positively known. The so-called Homeric hymns are certainly of a later age.
