Oliver Wendell Holmes
American writer, poet
Where we love is home, home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts. -Oliver Wendell Holmes Oliver Wendell Holmes was born in Cambridge, MA, in 1809. He was a distinguished American author and man of letters. He published one or two novels, besides essays and poems, but is best known for his three works, "The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table," "The Professor at the Breakfast Table," and "The Poet at the Breakfast Table." These first appeared in a magazine called the "Atlantic Monthly," and are full of quaint knowledge, along with the breadth of thought, and genial humor which will keep them favorites wherever the English language is spoken. In 1830, he found out that the U.S. Navy was going to scrap the U.S.S. Constitution (Old Ironsides was famous for defeating the British frigate Guerriere in the war of 1812.) Because of this poem, the ship was saved and is the oldest commissioned ship in the U.S. Navy. He died October 7, 1894. A sonOliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.,was a justice of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts.

    At once a well-known and easily mistaken identity, this name has meaning for the literary, legal, and medical communities the world over. This page is offered as a starting point for those who would like to know more of the Oliver Wendell Holmeses, the family, and their works. A brief introduction will be useful. Let's start from a point just about two hundred years ago, with a minister of religion (who was also an author) named Abiel Holmes (1763-1837). His second wife, Sarah Wendell, and he had five children: Mary, Ann, Sarah, Oliver and John. This first Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894), doubtless somewhat influenced by family precedent, became a physician. He also became a writer , and was much in demand as a speaker. Doctor Oliver Wendell Holmes married Amelia Lee Jackson when he was thirty. They had three children: Oliver Wendell, Jr. (1841-1935), Amelia Jackson Holmes, and Edward Jackson Holmes.

    MARE RUBRUM by: Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894)
      LASH out a stream of blood-red wine,
      For I would drink to other days,
      And brighter shall their memory shine,
      Seen flaming through its crimson blaze!
      The roses die, the summers fade,
      But every ghost of boyhood's dream
      By nature's magic power is laid
      To sleep beneath this blood-red stream!
      It filled the purple grapes that lay,
      And drank the splendors of the sun,
      Where the long summer's cloudless day
      Is mirrored in the broad Garonne;
      It pictures still the bacchant shapes
      That saw their hoarded sunlight shed,
      The maidens dancing on the grapes,
      Their milk-white ankles splashed with red.
      Beneath these waves of crimson lie,
      In rosy fetters prisoned fast,
      Those flitting shapes that never die,
      The swift-winged visions of the past.
      Kiss but the crystal's mystic rim,
      Each shadow rends its flowery chain,
      Springs in a bubble from its brim,
      And walks the chambers of the brain.
      Poor beauty! Time and fortune's wrong
      No shape nor feature may withstand;
      Thy wrecks are scattered all along

    THE DILEMMA by: Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894)
      OW, by the blessed Paphian queen,
      Who heaves the breast of sweet sixteen;
      By every name I cut on bark
      Before my morning star grew dark;
      By Hymen's torch, by Cupid's dart,
      By all that thrills the beating heart;
      The bright black eye, the melting blue,
      I cannot choose between the two.
      I had a vision in my dreams;
      I saw a row of twenty beams;
      From every beam a rope was hung,
      In every rope a lover swung;
      I asked the hue of every eye
      That bade each luckless lover die;
      Ten shadowy lips said, heavenly blue,
      And ten accused the darker hue.
      I asked a matron which she deemed
      With fairest light of beauty beamed;
      She answered, some thought both were fair,
      Give her blue eyes and golden hair.
      I might have liked her judgment well,
      But, as she spoke, she rung the bell,
      And all her girls, nor small nor few,
      Came marching in, their eyes were blue.
      I asked a maiden; back she flung
      The locks that round her forehead hung,
      And turned her eye, a glorious one,
      Bright as a diamond in the sun

    "Ay, tear her tattered ensign down!"
    Ay, tear her tattered ensign down!
    Long has it waved on high,
    And many an eye has danced to see
    That banner in the sky;
    Beneath it rung the battle shout,
    And burst the cannon's roar;
    The meteor of the ocean air
    Shall sweep the clouds no more. Her deck, once red with heroes' blood,
    Where knelt the vanquished foe, When winds were hurrying o'er the flood, And waves were white below, No more shall feel the victor's tread, Or know the conquered knee; The harpies of the shore shall pluck The eagle of the sea! Oh, better that her shattered hulk Should sink beneath the wave; Her thunders shook the mighty deep, And there should be her grave; Nail to the mast her holy flag, Set every threadbare sail

    "This is the ship of pearl, which, poets feign..."
    This is the ship of pearl, which, poets feign,
    Sail the unshadowed main,
    The venturous bark that flings
    On the sweet summer wind its purpled wings
    In gulfs enchanted, where the Siren sings,
    And coral reefs lie bare,
    Where the cold sea-maids rise to sun their streaming hair. Its webs of living gauze no more unfurl;
    Wrecked is the ship of pearl!
    And every chambered cell, Where its dim dreaming life was wont to dwell, As the frail tenant shaped his growing shell, Before thee lies revealed, Its irised ceiling rent, its sunless crypt unsealed! Year after year beheld the silent toil That spread his lustrous coil; Still, as the spiral grew, He left the past year's dwelling for the new

Dr Oliver Wendell Holmes, a 19th-century physician and man of letters, once described homeopathy as "a mingled mass of perverse ingenuity, of tinsel erudition, of imbecile credulity and of artful misrepresentation." Despite the harsh words, and efforts by the American Medical Association in the 19th century to suppress it, homeopathy remains a healing method, with practitioners, followers and pharmacies that dispense animal, vegetable and mineral arcana. Book : Homeopathy and Its Kindred Delusions (1842). Several anti-homeopathic works appeared in the 1830’s, Oliver Wendell Holmes’s "Homeopathy and Its Kindred Delusions" (1842) was the first serious counter-attack by orthodox medicine. Sommaire
