The Romantic Period, 1820-1860: Essayists and Poets: Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894)
Index Oliver Wendell Holmes, a celebrated physician and professor of anatomy and physiology at Harvard, is the hardest of the three well-known Brahmins to categorize because his work is marked by a refreshing versatility. It encompasses collections of humorous essays (for example, The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table , 1858), novels ( Elsie Venner , 1861), biographies ( Ralph Waldo Emerson , 1885), and verse that could be sprightly ("The Deacon's Masterpiece, or, The Wonderful One-Hoss Shay"), philosophical ("The Chambered Nautilus"), or fervently patriotic ("Old Ironsides"). Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the suburb of Boston that is home to Harvard, Holmes was the son of a prominent local minister. His mother was a descendant of the poet Anne Bradstreet. In his time, and more so thereafter, he symbolized wit, intelligence, and charm not as a discoverer or a trailblazer, but rather as an exemplary interpreter of everything from society and language to medicine and human nature.
Holmes was the father of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr

Oliver Wendell Holmes MD (1809-1894)
My father was very familiar with the sailing ship, Old Ironsides , and we went to see it when he visited me when I was living in Boston. The timber for that ship came from Liberty County, Georgia, and of course it was Abiel's son and Justice Holmes' father the doctor who wrote the famous poem ``Old Ironsides'' which helped organize the preservation of the ship.

Old Ironsides
By Oliver Wendell Holmes
September 16, 1830 Ay, tear her tattered ensign down!
Long has it waved on high,
And many an eye has danced to see
That banner in the sky;
Beneath it rung the battle shout,
And burst the cannon's roar; The meteor of the ocean air Shall sweep the clouds no more. Her deck, once red with heroes' blood, Where knelt the vanquished foe, When winds were hurrying o'er the flood, And waves were white below, No more shall feel the victor's tread, Or know the conquered knee; The harpies of the shore shall pluck The eagle of the sea! Oh, better that her shattered bulk

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. Quotes
To have doubted one's own first principles is the mark of a civilized man. It's faith in something and enthusiasm for something that makes life worth living. Take a music-bath once or twice a week for a few seasons, and you will find that it is to the soul what the water-bath is to the body. The man who is always worrying about whether or not his soul would be damned generally has a soul that isn't worth a damn. The sound of a kiss is not so loud as that of a cannon, but its echo lasts a great deal longer. A moment's insight is sometimes worth a life's experience. As life is action and passion, it is required of a man that he should share the passion and action of his time, at the peril of being not to have lived. I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving: To reach the port of heaven, we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it, but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor. Age, like distance lends a double charm.

With effervescing opinions, the quickest way to let them get flat is to let them get exposed to the air. Literature is full of coincidences, which some love to believe are plagiarisms. There are thoughts always abroad in the air which it takes more wit to avoid than to hit upon. Man's mind, stretched by a new idea, never goes back to its original dimensions. Nature, when she invented, manufactured, and patented her authors, contrived to make critics of the chips that were left.

Holmes was a medical doctor and a writer. He was born in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, and was educated at Harvard College. He practiced
medicine in Boston and taught at both Dartmouth College and Harvard.
He wrote a very influential essay, The Contagiousness of Puerperal

    OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES
HOLMES, OLIVER WENDELL After his return from Paris in. 1835 Dr Holmes lived in Boston, with summer sojournings at Pittsfield and Beverly Farms, and occasional trips to neighboring cities, until j886. He then undertook a four months journey in Europe, and in England had a sort of triumphal progress. On his return he wrote Our Hundred Days in Europe (1887), a courteous recognition of the hospitality and praise which had been accorded to him. During this visit Cambridge University made him Doctor of Letters, Edinburgh University made him Doctor of Laws, and Oxford University made him Doctor of Civil Law. Already, in 1880, Harvard University had made him Doctor of Laws. He died on the 7th of October 1894, and was buried from Kings Chapel, Boston, in the cemetery of Mount Auburn. -, His eldest son Oliver Wendell (b. 1841), who graduated from Harvard in 1861 and fought in the Civil War, retiring from the army as brevet lieut.-colonel 111 1864, took up the study of law and was admitted to the bar in Boston in 1866. He was for some years editor of the American Law Review, and after being professor in the Harvard Law School in 1882 was appointed in the same year a judge of the Massachusetts supreme court, rising to be chief justice in 1899. In 1902 he was made a judge of the United States Supreme Court. His work on The Common Law (1881) and his edition (1873) of Kents Commentaries are his principal publications; and he became widely recognized as one of the great jurists of his day.
