Hogg in Youth
James Hogg was born in 1770 at Ettrick Hall, at the top of the Ettrick Valley. The second of four sons of an impoverished farmer, he left school after six months' formal education. Aged seven, he began to work on the lowest rung of the farming ladder - as a cowherd. But he had learned, at his mother's knee, the great oral tradition of ballads and folklore of the Borders. And her father, "the far-famed Will O'Phaup" was reputed to have been the last man to converse with the fairies. In his mid-teens, James Hogg taught himself to read and write, and to play the fiddle, and entered the skilled profession of shepherding. He began making songs and verses for local gatherings. The other young people of the valleys called him "Jamie the Poeter". His career had begun
Hogg and Scott
At the turn of the eighteenth century, Hogg was working as a shepherd on the farm on Blackhouse in Yarrow for the Laidlaw family, who opened their hearts and library to the young shepherd poet. It was at this time that Walter Scott, the newly appointed sheriff of Selkirk, was roaming the Border Valleys in pursuit of the disappearing ballads of the Borders. Through the Laidlaws, he met James Hogg and his mother who had a rich store of the ballads.

Born in 1770 to a poor farming family, Hogg began to help with shepherding as a child. In the 1790s he was employed at Yarrow by Willie Laidlaw's father, and began to read and educate himself. A growing enthusiasm for Scottish poetry led to the publication of his dialect Scottish Pastorals in 1801, and to the friendship of Sir Walter Scott , whom he encountered over the Minstrelsy. In later years he published a number of volumes of verse, encouraged by Scott, and in 1824 his masterpiece, The private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. His popularity as a poet was due in part to his background as a shepherd, but this is his only professional treatise, about sheep, their care and diseases. It received a prize from the Highland Society.The surname of 'the Ettrick Shepherd' might be suppposed by English and American readers to have to do with pigs. In fact theword ' hog' in Scotland and parts of England, and as used in this book ('Of the Diseases of Hoggs, or young Sheep'), denotes a sheep older than a lamb but before its first shearing, and this probably reflects the ultimate derivation of the word (see OED).

    John Graham of Claverhouse (1648 - 89)
    Viscount Dundee - 'Bonnie Dundee'
    Resulting from the reign of Charles I there was an attempt to suppress the Presbyterian style of religion and this led to opposition by those who were known as Covenanters. They were especially strong in the Moffat area and Southwest of Scotland. Claverhouse was sent by the Scottish Parliament to put down the Covenanters and he was posted to Moffat, setting up his lodgings at the Black Bull Inn.
    This was a "bloody" time and anyone found to have taken part in the "blanket preachings" was under threat of severe punishment. This fight was finally won by the Covenanters in 1688, but Claverhouse remained loyal to the Jacobite cause. In a different location and in 1689 Claverhouse lead the Jacobites at Killiecrankie and although they won Claverhouse was mortally wounded.
    Claverhouse was known by several names, the title 'Bonnie Dundee' is thought to have come from Sir Walter Scott's writings.

    The Author
    James Hogg, called the Ettrick Shepherd, novelist and poet, was born in Ettrick Forest, Selkirkshire in 1770. His father was a impoverished farmer and the boy had no formal education. At the age of 20 he became shepherd to a farmer for ten years. There he had access to books and began to write. In 1801 he published his collection of Scottish pastorals and poems. In 1802 he met Walter Scott, and their interest in traditional ballads led to a lifelong friendship. After various misfortunes as a farmer he moved to Edinburgh in 1810. There he started a literary magazine which folded after a year. His growing reputation as a poet led to friendships with De Qunicey, Wordsworth and Byron. In 1816 the Countess of Dalkeith bequeathed him a farm where he lived for the rest of his life until his death in 1835.

    Kilmeny ( in The Queen's Wake
    Online Text Ce poème de 330 vers raconte comment Kilmeny, innocente jeune fille de la campagne écossaise, est enlevée au Paradis par des esprits. Il n'est pas exactement en anglais, mais en Scots, langue des Lowlands écossaises, ce qui est une petite difficulté ; une fois celle-ci surmontée, on est conquis par le style simple et la beauté de la langue de Hogg, célébrant la nature écossaise en même temps que la sainteté et l'innocence de Kilmeny manifestement une allusion, consciente ou non, à la Vierge Marie, même si je suppose que Hogg était presbytérien. Certains passages me sont obscurs, comme l'espèce de vision prophétique de Kilmeny, encore que je crois comprendre qu'il s'agit d'une symbolisation de l'exécution de la reine Mary Stuart.
    • BONNIE Kilmeny gaed up the glen;
      But it wasna to meet Duneira's men,
      Nor the rosy monk of the isle to see,
      For Kilmeny was pure as pure could be.
      It was only to hear the yorlin sing
