DONALD MacGILLIVRAY by James Hogg (1770-1835) Hogg, 'the Ettrick Shepherd', initially disclaimed authorship and rather described the piece as 'a capital old song, and very popular'. The Edinburgh Review, in an article highly disparaging of the Jacobite cause, and particularly of the Jacobite Minstrelsy, quoted 'Donald Macgillivray' as one of the best songs in Hogg's collection. Hogg afterwards avowed the fraud, and gloried in it. See Hogg's Jacobite Relics
