James Hogg
"The Ettrick Shepherd", as he was called by John Wilson in Blackwood's Magazine, was born at Ettrickhall Farm in Ettrick Forest, the second of four sons of Robert Hogg and Margaret Laidlaw. The farm does not survive, but a Victorian monument marks the spot, and the precise date of Hogg's birth is equally obscure; Hogg gave it as 25 January 1772, but parish records show he was baptised on 9 December 1770. At the age of 20 Hogg was employed as a shepherd at a farm in Yarrow belonging to William Laidlaw , a relative of his mother's. Here Hogg had access to books, and Laidlaw (himself a poet) encouraged him to write. His first poem was published in The Scots Magazine And General Intelligencer in 1794, and in 1800 his war-song "Donald Macdonald" enjoyed wide popularity, encouraging him to publish his first collection, "Scottish Pastorals", the following year. He met Sir Walter Scott , and their mutual interest in traditional ballads led to a lifelong friendship. Hogg divided his energies between literature and farming, losing a great deal of money through a failed deal to buy a farm in Harris, and having little success with his own farm in Dumfriesshire. He moved to Edinburgh in 1810 and edited a literary magazine called "The Spy" which folded after a year.

Famous Scots
- James Hogg (1770-1835) The Ettrick Shepherd
Born at Ettrick, Selkirkshire, in the Scottish Border country, Hogg was the son of a shepherd. He received a scanty education but at the age of 16 he was inspired to write poetry by hearing a reading of "The Gentle Shepherd" written by Allan Ramsay (1686-1758). His poetical life was further developed by a connection with Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832). Hogg supplied Scott with a number of ballads for his "Border Minstrelsy" collection. But it was not until 1807, when a volume poems entitled "The Mountain Bard" was published that he earned any recognition. It is interesting to note that he published a practical guide to the care of sheep in the same year! But the money earned from his published works were soon lost in unprofitable farming. He published "The Queen's Wake" in 1813, a series of ballads supposedly recited before Mary Queen of Scots at a competition of Scottish bards. This earned Hogg some recognition outside of the Borders as it possessed some real merit, showing a strong if rather fantastic imagination. Later Life
Hogg spent the latter half of his life partly in Edinburgh and partly at a farm at Altrive in Yarrow in the Borders. The farm had been given to him by the duke of Buccleuch.

Administrative/Biographical History
James Hogg was born in Ettrick, in the Scottish Borders, probably in November 1770. In his youth he was a shepherd at Willanslee and at Douglas Burn on the Yarrow, but he had aspirations of becoming a farmer. His earliest writing includes Donald McDonald (1800) and Scottish pastorals (1801). His first real earnings from his literary work and from a treatise on diseases in sheep were lost in a failed attempt to become a farmer in Dumfriesshire. In 1810 therefore, Hogg headed for Edinburgh. By 1815 he had established himself as a literary man, and he was granted the farm of Altrive by the Duke of Buccleuch which became his home. Hogg's ballads and tales include The mountain bard The shepherd's calendar The brownies of Bodsbeck (1818), and

" The Ettrick Shepherd ", James Hogg (1770-1835) was born in Ettrick, Selkirk. William Wordsworth, for whom Yarrow was a place of pilgrimage, admired him as a romantic poet, but it is for his "The Private Memoirs and confessions of a Justified Sinner" that Hogg is now principally remembered. He was known to frequent the Tibbie Shiel's Inn. This hotel can still be visited today, just off the A708 Selkirk-Moffat road at the St. Mary's Loch.
A Boy's Song W here the pools are bright and deep,
Where the grey trout lies asleep,
Up the river and over the lea,
That's the way for Billy and me. Where the blackbird sings the latest,
Where the hawthorn blooms the sweetest,
Where the nestlings chirp and flee,
That's the way for Billy and me. Where the mowers mow the cleanest,
Where the hay lies thick and greenest,
There to track the homeward bee,
That's the way for Billy and me. Where the hazel bank is steepest, Where the shadow falls the deepest
