PAPERS
Biography Thomas Wentworth Higginson was born in Cambridge on Dec. 22, 1823. He was educated at Harvard, receiving his A.B. in 1841 and graduating from the Divinity School in 1847. While an undergraduate at Harvard, Higginson took the optional coursed in natural history offered by Thaddeus William Harris and developed interests in botany and entomology under Harris' influence. From 1840-1841, Higginson was corresponding secretary and entomological curator of the Harvard Natural History Society, and in the years after his A.B. continued to do some general botanizing. After Harvard, Higginson was involved in the Civil War, in religious activities, in Massachusetts politics, and in the writing of a number of general historical and literary works. During the course of his many other occupations, he maintained an amateur interest in natural history and botany: he was a member of the Boston Society of Natural History and of the Cambridge Entomological Club; he published a memoir of Thaddeus William Harris in 1869 and a book of general essays on plant lore ( The Procession of the Flowers and kindred papers ...) in 1897; and in his biographical blurbs in American Men of Science (1906 and 1910 eds.), he listed the flora of Boston and vicinity as one of his scientific interests.

Library of the Gray Herbarium Archives Asa Gray (1810-1888) was well known as the "Father of American Botany" and champion of Charles Darwin. He was called to Harvard in 1842 as the new Fisher Professor of Natural History. In 1864 Gray offered his collections to Harvard with the stipulation that they build a suitable building to house them. That same year a small brick building was built and the collections were moved. Today the Library of the Gray Herbarium numbers more than 63,000 volumes and 455 periodical titles. The collection specializes in botanical history, floras of the new world, and Linnaeana and pre-Linnean sources*. Materials in the Gray Herbarium archives include personal and institutional inventories, field notes, diaries, expeditions, plant lists, photographs, historic letters, and artifacts. Researchers may consult materials from the archives only by appointment or written request. Send inquiries to botref@oeb.harvard.edu

Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Editor and Colonel
A prolific writer frequently published in the Atlantic Monthly , "a magazine of literature, art, and politics," Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911) corresponded with Emily Dickinson for nearly 25 years and critiqued Walt Whitman several times in the public forum of the printed essay. Liberal in many of his political opinions, advocating for the disenfranchised, Higginson was an abolitionist; in the Civil War, he was a Union Colonel . Dickinson's letters to him show that Higginson called her wayward, dark, uncontrolled, and tameless in taste. His evaluation of Whitman was conventional: "It is no discredit to Walt Whitman that he wrote Leaves of Grass ,' only that he did not burn it afterwards. A young writer must commonly plough his first crop" ( "Literature as Art" ). Though he is most famous for his correspondence with Dickinson, he gave each significant attention. Table of Contents

Following his graduation from the Divinity School at Harvard in 1847, he became pastor of a Congregational Church in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Higginson's preaching often centered on social reform. He was an outspoken abolitionist (he supported John Brown) and an advocate of women's suffrage. Higginson's abolitionist views found further outlet in his Civil War service, as he became Colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteersthe first regiment of freedmen in the U. S. Army. After the war, Higginson lived in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, serving a brief term in the Massachusetts legislature. He is now also remembered as a correspondent of Emily Dickinson.

Lawrence, Kansas [Territory], Sunday, Jan. 24th 1858 Gen[eral] Thomas W. Higginson My Dear Gen[eral], I am happy to inform you that a certain Rail Road has been and is in full blast. Several persons have taken full advantage of it to visit their friends. Only one or two accidents have happened. Our funds in these hard times have nearly run out, and we need some help, for the present is attended with considerable expense. If you know of any one desirous of helping the cause, just mention our case to him, and ask him to communicate with Walter Oakley at Topeka, James Blood and myself at Lawrence, or Sam C. Smith at Quindaro. Our friend A. A. Jamison is now in this city in attendance upon the Territorial Legislature, of which he is a member: he wishes to be remembered to you. Did Parker Pillsbury ever publish his Lecture on the French Revolution. If so, I wish you would send me a copy. Yours in haste, Sam[uel] F. Tappan New line New line About Samuel F. Tappan and Thomas Wentworth Higginson: Samuel F. Tappan, who was a native of Massachusetts, was one of a party of thirty settlers who came to Kansas in 1854. Locating in Lawrence, he became the correspondent of the New York Tribune and the Boston Atlas, telling of the difficulties with the border ruffians. He was clerk of the Topeka Constitutional Convention and assistant clerk of the House of Representatives in 1856. In July of that year he went east and brought back by way of Iowa and Nebraska a quantity of arms and ammunition. He was secretary of the Leavenworth Constitutional Convention in 1858 and clerk of the Wyandotte Convention in 1859.

September 11, 2001...it will be a day that none of us will forget, a day forever etched in the pages of world history... the images forever etched in our memories.
We quickly learned that morning that one of New York's World Trade Center buildings had been hit by a plane, sending black smoke and immense flames billowing into the moring air. Then, minutes later, another plane hit the second building. Then we learned our Pentagon had been attacked...and yet another plane hit down in Pennsylvania. We sat motionless in front of our t.v.'s in shock, disbelief and horror as we watched the faces of the victims appear before our very eyes.
Thousands dead...thousands injured...thousands more left behind with sadness, hurt, anger, and the question we are still asking ourselves to this very day...WHY?
My prayers and sentiments go out to ALL those that lost Loved ones in this horrific tragedy. I can only imagine what it would feel like to have lost a family member in one of these attacks.
As many familes are trying to piece back their lives once again, we are reminded time and time again that America IS strong and we Will prevail. We may have been attacked but our Spirits and Pride were never injured. We may have been attacked...but we all stood strong in support of one another. And We will continue to do so.
God Bless America and all Our People!!
