    THE BABY SORCERESS by: Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911)
      Y baby sits beneath the tall elm-trees,
      A wreath of tangled ribbons in her hands;
      She twines and twists the many-coloured strands,
      A little sorceress, weaving destinies.
      Now the pure white she grasps; now naught can please
      But strips of crimson, lurid as the brands
      From passion's fires; or yellow, like the sands
      That lend soft netting to the azure seas.
      And so with sweet, incessant toil she fills
      A summer hour, still following fancies new,
      Till through my heart a sudden terror thrills
      Lest, as she weaves, her aimless choice prove true.
      Thank God! our Fates proceed not from our wills:
      The Power that spins the thread shall blend the hue.

    THE SNOWING OF THE PINES by: Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911)
      OFTER than silence, stiller than still air
      Float down from high pine-boughs the slender leaves.
      The forest floor its annual boon receives
      That comes like snowfall, tireless, tranquil, fair.
      Gently they glide, gently they clothe the bare
      Old rocks with grace. Their fall a mantle weaves
      Of paler yellow than autumnal sheaves
      Or those strange blossoms the witch-hazels wear.
      Athwart long aisles the sunbeams pierce their way;
      High up, the crows are gathering for the night;
      The delicate needles fill the air; the jay
      Takes through their golden mist his radiant flight;
      They fall and fall, till at November's close
      The snow-flakes drop as lightly snows on snows.

    Thomas Wentworth Higginson
    He is remembered, when he is remembered at all, as Emily Dickinson’s well-meaning but short-sighted “preceptor,” who in co-editing the first collection of her poetry smoothed away the vivid irregularity of her genius. By profession he was a Protestant clergyman; yet he organized and commanded the first regiment of black troops in the Civil War. By heritage, he was a Boston Brahmin; yet in 1854 he led a vigilante assault to free a fugitive slave from a federal courthouse, in the course of which a marshal was shot to death. He was one of nineteenth-century America’s best-known essayists and speakers; yet it was political activism on behalf of abolition, women’s rights, and the demands of working people that gave joy to much of his life. His long career may seem to our later eyes filled with paradoxes if not outright contradictions, yet to Thomas Wentworth Higginson, it was a life which, in looking back, he could describe as Cheerful Yesterdays.

    Black Rebellion: Five Slave Revolts
    by Thomas Wentworth Higginson
    Introduction by James M. McPherson
    In Black Rebellion: Five Slave Revolts, essayist and abolitionist Thomas Wentworth Higginson peers into the seldom seen comers of history to describe the effortssome tragic, others triumphantby black people to resist the oppression of slavery. For many colonists in the Americas, slavery was a necessity in a land where forests needed to be cleared and plantations needed to be tilled. For many Africans brought by force to the New World, and for their ancestors, slavery was such a despised condition that they would risk death to win their freedom. The scenes of struggle in Black Rebellion begin with the tropical climates of Jamaica and South America, where groups of escaped slaves formed societies of their own in the wilderness. The former slaves, known as Maroons, won several victories in battles against much larger armies from England and the Netherlands sent to re-enslave them, fearing that such groups would inspire other slaves to revolt. The author also examines the unsuccessful anti-slavery conspiracies in the young United States, beginning with the carefully planned Virginia rebellion of
