Herrick, Robert
English Cavalier poet, whose work is noted for its diversity of form and for its style, melody, and feeling. He was born in London and educated at the University of Cambridge. In 1629 he became vicar of Dean Prior in Devonshire, but in 1647, during the Great Rebellion, he was deprived of his position because of his Royalist sympathies.
Following the restoration of Charles II, Herrick was reinstated at Dean Prior, where he resided from 1662 until his death. His chief work is Hes perides; or, the Works Both Human and Divine of Robert Herrick, Esq. (1648). Within the same book, but under a separate title page bearing the date 1647, was printed a group of religious poems, His Noble Numbers. The entire collection contains more than 1200 short poems, ranging in form from epistles, eclogues, and epigrams to love poems. The themes are pastoral, dealing mostly with English country life and village customs. Herrick was influenced by classical Roman poetry. Many of his poems, such as "To the Virgins to Make Much of Time," "Corinna's Going a-Maying," and "Delight in Disorder," have been anthologized, and several were set to music.

HERRICK, ROBERT rough gravelly ground at varying distances from the coast and always in comparatively shallow water. The seasOn of spawning is different in different places, and even in the same district, e.g. the east coast of Scotland, there are herrings spawning in spring and others in autumn. These are not the same fish but different races. Those which breed in winter or spring deposit their spawn near the coast at the mouths of estuaries, and ascend the estuaries to a considerable distance at certain times, as in the Firths of Forth and Clyde, while those which spawn in summer or aqtumn belong more to the open sea, e.g. the great shoals that visit the North Sea annually. Several excellent accounts of the herring have been published, as by Valenciennes in the 20th vol. of the Histoire naturelle des poissons, and more especially by Mr J. M. Mitchell, The Herring, its Natural History and National Importance (Edinburgh, 1864). Recent investigations are described in the Reports of the Fishery Board for Scotland, and in the reports of the German Kominission zur Untersuchung der Deutschen Meere (published at Kiel). (J. T. C.) To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time
To Daffodils

The Hourglass
To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old time is still a-flying; And this same flower that smiles today, Tomorrow will be dying. The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun, 5 The higher he's a-getting, The sooner will his race be run, And nearer he's to setting. That age is best which is the first, When youth and blood are warmer, 10 But being spent, the worse, and worst Times still succeed the former. Then be not coy, but use your time, And while ye may, go marry; For having lost but once your prime, 15 You may for ever tarry.
Hesperides
To Daffodils
Fair daffodils, we weep to see You haste away so soon: As yet the early-rising sun Has not attained his noon. Stay, stay, 5 Until the hasting day Has run But to the evensong; And, having prayed together, we Will go with you along. 10 We have short time to stay as you; We have as short a spring; As quick a growth to meet decay, As you or anything. We die, 15 As your hours do, and dry Away Like to the summer's rain; Or as the pearls of morning's dew, Ne'er to be found again. 20
Hesperides
The Hourglass
That hourglass which there ye see With water filled (sirs, credit me) The humor was, as I have read, But lovers' tears encrystalled, Which, as they drop by drop do pass 5 From th'upper to the under-glass, Do in a trickling manner tell, By many a wat'ry syllable, That lovers' tears in lifetime shed Do restless run when they are dead. 10

BIOGRAPHY The son of a London goldsmith, Robert Herrick apprenticed to his uncle, also in the same trade, for six years between the ages of sixteen and twenty-two before entering Saint John's College, Cambridge. After graduating in 1617, Herrick was a protégé to Ben Jonson to whom he wrote five poems. Not just a poet, Herrick took holy orders in the Church of England in 1623 and served as vicar at Dean Prior in Devonshire until 1647 when, owing to his Royalist allegiances, he was removed during the Great Rebellion. That same year, Herrick published his first volume of verse Noble Numbers that was collected in his Herperides or the Works Both Human and Divine of Robert Herrick Esq . (1648). This major book of more than 1200 poems includes carpe diem love lyrics, epigrams, elegies, and epistles. From his studies of Horace, Catullus, and other authors of classical antiquity, Herrick adapted the conventions of the Roman pastoral tradition to the tradition of the English eclogue in order to celebrate British village life and customs. With the Restoration of Charles II, Herrick resumed his office of vicar at Dean Prior from 1662 until his death in 1674.

Robert Herrick
Robert Herrick worked initially for his uncle as an apprentice goldsmith in London before attending Cambridge. In 1623, he was ordained as a priest and acted as chaplain to the Duke of Buckingham on the expedition to La Rochelle. In 1629 he was appointed to the living of Dean Prior in Devon by Charles I, but was ejected in 1647 under the Commonwealth for refusing the Solemn League and Covenant. He was restored to the living in 1662 after the Restoration of the monarchy, having lived in the meantime in Westminster. Herrick wrote some 2,500 poems, publishing his major collection, Hesperides , in 1648, which contains about half of them. His poetry shows considerable diversity of form, with imitations of the Roman poets Horace and Catallus, epistles, epigrams, love poetry, and folk songs, many of which were later set to music. Herrick was a consummate craftsman and "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying" are his best-known lines. He died a bachelor at the age of 83. Upon Julia's Clothes
Whenas in silks my Julia goes,
Then, then, methinks, how sweetly flows
That liquefaction of her clothes! Next, when I cast mine eyes and see
That brave vibration each way free,
Oh how that glittering taketh me!
    Upon a Child
    Here a pretty baby lies
    Sung asleep with lullabies:
Pray be silent, and not stir
    Th'easy earth that covers her.
    Upon a Child That Died
Here she lies, a pretty bud,
Lately made of flesh and blood,
Who as soon fell fast asleep
As her little eyes did peep. Give her strewings, but not stir The earth that lightly covers her. The first one is very sensual, no? I'd like to hear some comment on the specific words and images. The image (i.e., the metaphor) in the last three lines especially is an interestingly elusive one. Can you make it out? (I remember as a graduate student being in a class that was posed that question and I remember failing to see what the instructor was getting at!) Which of the two latter poems do you think is stronger?

Clergyman and poet, Robert Herrick was born in 1591 in London, the seventh child of Nicholas Herrick, a wealthy goldsmith. In November 1592, two days after making a will, his father killed himself by jumping from the fourth-floor window of his house. However, the Queen's Almoner did not confiscate the Herrick estate for the crown as was usually the case with suicides. There is no record of Herrick attending school. In 1607 he was apprenticed to his uncle Sir William Herrick as a goldsmith.
A Country Life ': To his Brother M. Tho. Herrick (1610) is Herrick's earliest known poem, and deals with the move from London to farm life in Leicestershire. '
