Cheapside
, London, in 1591, the seventh child of Nicholas Herrick, a prosperous goldsmith. In November 1592, two days after making a will, Nicholas killed himself by jumping from the fourth-floor window of his house. The Queen's Almoner had to be paid a £220 fee for not to confiscate the Herrick estate for the crown as was usually the case with suicides. There is no record of Herrick attending school, although it is possible he attended Westminster School . In 1607 he became apprenticed to his uncle Sir William Herrick as a goldsmith. St. John's College, Cambridge in 1613, graduated a Bachelor of Arts in 1617, and Master of Arts in 1620. He became the eldest of the "Sons of Ben", Cavalier poets who idolized Ben Jonson , mixing in literary circles in London. On April 24, 1623 Herrick was ordained an Episcopal minister and acted as chaplain to Buckingham Charles I to the living of Dean Prior in the diocese of Exeter, a post he reluctantly accepted. There, in Devon, he lived in the seclusion of country life, and wrote some of his best work, never completely ceasing, however, to long for the pleasures of London. Protectorate government for refusing the Solemn League and Covenant, and returned to London. In 1648 Herrick published his major collection

    Robert Herrick (15911674). Ceremonies for Christmas. Come, bring witha noise, My merry, merry boys, The Christmas Log to the firing
    http://shakespeareauthorship.com/xmas/herrick.html
    Robert Herrick (1591-1674)
    Ceremonies for Christmas
    The Christmas Log to the firing;
    And drink to your heart's desiring.
    For good success in his spending,
    Come while the log is a-tinding.
    The while the meat is a-shredding;
    To fill the paste that's a-kneading.
    Christmas-Eve, Another Ceremony
    Come guard this night the Christmas-Pie,
    That the thief, though ne'er so sly,
    With his flesh-hooks, don't come nigh
    From him, who all alone sits there,
    Having his eyes still in his ear,
    And a deal of nightly fear
    Another to the Maids
    Wash your hands, or else the fire Will not tind to your desire; Unwashed hands, ye maidens, know, Dead the fire, though ye blow.
    Another
    Wassail the trees, that they may bear You many a plum, and many a pear: For more or less fruits they will bring, As you do give them wassailing.
    An Ode of the Birth of our Savior
    In numbers, and but these few, I sing Thy birth, Oh, Jesu! Thou pretty Baby, born here, With sup'rabundant scorn here: Who for Thy princely port here, Out-stable for Thy court here.
