61. Various Topics
Having read when I was in high school GA Henty s In the Reign of English war correspondent and author George Alfred Henty ( 18321902) is almost forgotten today
http://wais.stanford.edu/General/general_various.htm
Various Topics First Names One of the projects I shall never finish is a cultural history of Latin America as manifested in given names. Traditionally they were Catholic, but since independence Indian names like Cuauhtémoc have been popular. Then the names of military, political and cultural figures, like Napoleon, Wilson and Victor Hugo showed a certain cosmopolitan interest until they were chosen simply because the sounded nice. I doubt that Hugo Chavez of Venezuela is well informed about Victor Hugo. When my wife and I were touring Latin America, a dean at the University of Belo Horizonte took us out to lunch. To make pleasant conversation, my wife asked if he had any children. "Yes, two". "What are their names?" "One is Ronald, the other is Hilton". Clearly he or his wife listened to my daily broadcasts in Spanish and Portuguese, and decided that they liked the sound of the names.
As for Christian names, we get this information from "Alejo de Jesús Orvañanos (yes, my middle name is Jesús)". From the website http://www.elalmanaque.com/santoral/enero/1-1-jesus.htm, he extracted the names of those who are celebrated on January !, "the rite of the circumcision".: Jesus, Manuel, Manuela,. Agripino, Frodoberto y Justino obispos; Almaquio y Concordio mártires; Beatriz y Eufrosina vírgenes; Vicente Mª Strambi confesor; Odilón y Guillermo abades". I don't know anyone named "Frodoberto". Alejo de Jesús has a problem. Jesus celebrates his feast day on January 1, but Alejo (Alexix) celebrates his on July 17. Alezis was a fourth century hermit. Do people give their sons the name Alexis because they admire the hermit, because the boys were born on July 17, or simply because they like the sound of the name?

Rachel Johnson is Subject Collections Librarian in the Education and Sport team, and her contribution to the recent UCW Student Research Conference was within the subject area of Children's Literature with a research focus on 2 nineteenth century authors, George MacDonald (1824-1905) and GA Henty (1832-1902), both of whom wrote their main body of work during the second half of the nineteenth century against a background of social and political change and religious doubt and questioning. Though all except three of George MacDonald's works for children were written as fairy tales, the stories of G. A. Henty were written as boys adventure stories. Within this context her particular interest is in the contrasting value structures within their work and how they are communicated to the reader.
The aspect presented at the UCW Student Research Conference was the fairy tale motifs and narrative patterns found in the work of both authors indicating how these aspects fit into the main focus of the study, that is, the value structures within their work.

Horizons of expectation: fairy tale motifs and narrative patterns in the work of George MacDonald (1824-1905) and G.A. Henty (1832-1902) In this article I aim to investigate the fairy tale motifs and narrative patterns in the work of George MacDonald (1824 – 1905) and G. A. Henty (1832 – 1902). The initial section will explain the overall focus of the study, giving some background information to provide a context within which to investigate this specific area. The second section will endeavour to identify the basic fairy tale narrative pattern and give examples of some frequently encountered fairy tale motifs. This section will continue by narrowing this down to examine how these fairy tale elements are demonstrated in one work by Henty. In the final section I will endeavour to show how this aspect is relevant to the overall focus of the study. The two authors, George MacDonald and G.A. Henty both wrote their main body of work during the second half of the nineteenth century, against a background of social and political change and religious doubt and questioning. MacDonald enjoyed wide recognition in his own lifetime as a novelist, poet, critic and translator, but is more likely to be recognised as the creator of two adult fantasies and as a writer of fairy tales. Most of George MacDonald’s writing for children falls within the genre of fairy tale, though he did write three children’s stories outside of this genre.

In 1854, William Holman Hunt (1827-1910) exhibits The Light of the World , a picture that shows Jesus holding a lantern and knocking on a door, symbolically asking to be let into the heart of the viewer. In an age of doubt, it affirms Christian religious belief. Its message is that a saviour, a man-god, can come and redeem sinful humankind. fallen sinner . The models for the bearded face of Jesus are Elizabeth Siddal, lover of the painter Gabriel Dante Rossetti ( see below ) and herself a painter, and the poet Christina Rossetti ( see below ), Gabriel's sister. Still, it becomes the most popular of Victorian paintings: Hunt makes four versions of it, it is engraved and millions of photographic reproductions are sold. In 1905, one copy of the original tours the colonies and thousands of people flock to see what they think is a sacred object. Finally, this is the age of

A list of general Roman Historical fiction compiled by Jerise Fogel (fogel1@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu) Apologies for the lateness of this summary, and thank you very much to all the contributors! I've listed the name of the recommender after each set of Roman novels (or other infothe people on this list are astonishingly knowledgeable, as I already knew, but continue to marvel at). Lisa Avanger (C513024@MIZZOU1.missouri.edu) sent info about Johanna Shafer's list which is included here; Stefan Cramme (a2554852@athena.rrz.uni-koeln.de) has compiled a list of 1500 or so titles (that's not a typo!) of fictional books dealing with ancient Rome and written in modern European languages, and has on the back-burner a Roman-fiction project that sounds incredibly interesting, if a bit daunting. My original suspicions about the lack of interest in Carthage were perhaps a bit too strong, and Flaubert's *Salammbo* is a sort of big thing to have overlooked, considering that several movies, including *Cabiria*, the early silent movie which Fellini shows clips from inside *Roma*, were based (if somewhat loosely) on it. Happy Romanizing!
