George Alfred Henty, the Prince of Storytellers
G. A.Henty's life (1832-1902) was filled with exciting adventure. Completing Westminster School, he attended Cambridge University. Along with a rigorous course of study, Henty participated in boxing, wrestling, and rowing. The strenuous study and healthy, competitive participation in sports prepared Henty to be with the British army in Crimea, as a war correspondent witnessing Garbaldi fight in Italy, being present in Paris during the Franco-Prussian war, in Spain with the Carlists, at the opening of the Suez Canal, touring India with the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) and a trip to the California gold fields. These are only a few of his exciting adventures. G.A. Henty lived during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) and began his story telling career with his own children. After dinner, he would spend an hour or two in telling them a story that would continue the next day. Some stories took weeks! A friend was present one day and watched the spell-bound reaction of his children suggesting that he write down his stories so others could enjoy them. He did. Henty wrote approx. 144 books plus stories for magazines and was dubbed as "The Prince of Story-Tellers" and "The Boy's Own Historian." One of Mr. Henty's secretaries would quickly pace back and forth in his study dictating stories as fast as the secretary could record them.

EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION
Detail from a Chinese nianhua print of the Boxer Rebellion. n late nineteenth-century China, popular unrest was provoked by famine, an enfeebled central government, and the perception that foreigners were taking control of the country. In the north-eastern province of Shandong, a rebel group which practised martial arts, called 'The Boxers United in Righteousness', launched attacks on German missionaries.
The movement spread through North China. Isolated missionary settlements were attacked; railway stations and lines were destroyed and, with official support, the Boxers besieged the Legation or diplomatic quarter in Peking (Beijing) between June 20 and August 14 when a joint force of British, American, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Italian and Austrian troops arrived.
Books by survivors of the Siege of the Legations or missionary massacres rarely acknowledge that most victims of the Boxers, whether Christian converts or simply innocent residents, were Chinese; and the Chinese government was humbled and financially crippled by the terms demanded by the foreign powers.

Island 4: Boys' Stories of School, Adventure, and Empire Series publishing for gifts and prizes The pioneer writer of boys' adventure stories was Frederick Marryatt (1792-1848), an ex-naval officer who wrote a whole series of shipboard novels. His Masterman Ready, or the Wreck of the Pacific , first published in three volumes in 1841-42, is a desert island story in the tradition of Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson . It was ten years later before a second edition was called for, but many more followed. The reprint shown here, from Frederick Warne's Prize Library series in 1891, is open at a typical publisher's catalogue of the period, listing title after title suitable for gifts and school (or Sunday School) prizes. R. M. Ballantyne and boys' adventure stories R. M. Ballantyne (1825-1894), the son of an Edinburgh printer who was apprenticed to the Hudson's Bay Company in Canada as a teenager, created boys' adventure stories that both instilled the values of manly independence and conveyed (from the author's personal experience) an extraordinary range of information about exciting, dangerous new career opportunities. His best-known work Coral Island is shown in an earlier case. Displayed here are a reprint of Ballantyne's first book

    G. A. Henty was a 19th Century (1832-1902) storyteller who wrote many books and stories. He was so popular that he was dubbed "The Prince of Storytellers" in his lifetime. Fortunately, Henty’s books have been reprinted so they are not lost! His imaginative tales bring you learning in an enchanting manner, teaching English vocabulary, culture, geography, and history all woven together in a well-written story like a fine Persian rug. Since Henty wrote in a time when our language was different, being more refined and broader, and much more complicated than our speech of today. Therefore, if you would like to have your child learn a very extensive use of words, many of which are still perfectly usable and wonderful, as opposed to being archaic and/or "corny," Henty’s books afford your family an excellent opportunity. Among Henty’s titles are: "The Cat of Bubastes" set in Pharonic Egypt; "The Young Carthaginian" a story of Hannibal’s life; "For the Temple: A Tale of the Fall of Jerusalem;" "Beric the Briton: A Story of the Roman Invasion;" "St. Bartholomew’s Eve: A Tale of the Huguenot Wars (in France);" "By Pike and Dyke: A Tale of the Rise of the Dutch Republic;" "Under Drake’s Flag: A Tale of the Spanish Main;" "With Lee in Virginia: A Story of the American Civil War;" and "By Right of Conquest or With Cortez in Mexico."

The Lion of The North : A Tale of the Times of Gustavus Adolphus > Customer Review #1: Highly recommended

With the Thirty Years War (1618-48) raging in Europe, sixteen-year-old Malcolm Graheme, and other Scots sign up to fight in the army of the great Swedish King, Gustavus Adolphus (1594-1632). The Scots form the very backbone of Gustavuss army, and Malcolm Graheme is right in the thick of things, finding himself in adventure after adventure as he fights his way across a Germany racked by war and religious hatred. With daring and panache, Malcolm outwits and outfights his opponents from 1630 through to the battle of Nordlingen in 1635. George Alfred Henty (1832-1902) is largely forgotten today, but prior to World War II he had many young fans of his adventure books. Muscular fiction at its exciting best, Hentys stories follow a brave and upright young man through a series of adventures during great historical happenings (usually great happenings of British history). Teaching lessons largely out of step with todays world (bravery, daring, military service, etc.), this book is nonetheless a cracking good read. So, if you are interested in historical fiction set during the Thirty Years War, then I highly recommend this book to you.

Have you found an Early Children's Book at a garage sale, I would keep it in the vault. They must be keep complete, clean and in their original bindings out of the hands of juvenile owners. If I were to take a H. G. Wells Time Machine out for a spin, I would travel back in time and pick up some fine copies of stories and picture books that have never been in the hands of those juvenile owners. This observation applies to all literature, the older the book the less likely is it to survived intact so be careful with them. It is surprising how many have, in fact, withstood the ravages of time on the shelves of the book collectors, libraries, the antiquarian dealers book rooms, devouring pests, wars, divorce, and the invisible man. Rare books on natural history, specially written for children, seemed to have appeared during the last quarter of the 18th century. The natural History of Birds; Intended for the Amusement and Instruction of children in 1791, by Samuel Galton, who was a member of the Lunar Society, the scientific society which meet at Matthew Boulton's home, Soho House, now a museum open to the public in Birmingham, wrote the natural History of Quadrupeds for the Instruction of Young Persons followed in two volumes in 1801. Miss Priscilla Wakefield (1751-1832), wrote her famous book, The Juvenile Anecdotes (1795), which I believe was founded on fact was completed with a large folding hand-colored map of the world, and and later she came out with the Instinct Displayed (1811).
