Biography of Patrick Henry
In 1765, at the time of the passage of the Stamp Act, he was a member of the House of Burgesses. He offered a set of resolutions declaring the exclusive right of colonists as Englishmen to tax themselves. These resolutions, says Bancroft, "rang the alarm bell for the continent." In 1775 he stirred up the people of Virginia, much as Sam Adams stirred up the citizens of Boston. He attended the second Virginia Convention, and offered a resolution that the colony be put immediately in a state of defense. He made an eloquent plea for instant action, closing, it is said, with these words (according to a friend's report, written from memory, many years later): "Gentlemen may cry 'Peace! Peace!' but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms. Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almlghty God! I know not what course others may take, but, as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!" Henry was a member of the first Continental Congress. He acted as governor of Virginia during the war. He was dissatisfied with the federal constitution and opposed its ratification in 1788. He felt that it gave the general government too much power, a position taken by his state later at the opening of the Civil War.

WHO: PATRICK HENRY He was a distinguished statesman, lawyer and orator, best remembered for his words, "Give me liberty or give me death!" spoken while urging Virginia colonial militia to be armed for defense against England. He became governor of the new commonwealth of Virginia in 1776 and worked tirelessly to support the revolution. His strong feelings of democracy were evident when he was the first American politician to call voters, "fellow citizens." He was against ratification of the Constitution, believing it endangered the rights of individuals and states. But upon it passing, he supported it and then worked for the passage of the first 10 amendments to the Constitution, called the Bill of Rights.

This volume contains numerous entries for legal fees and exhibits Henry’s growing legal practice. Several Hanover County merchants are listed. The volume is indexed, but incomplete. Ledger (facsimile and manuscript), 1764, 1770–1775, 1778, 1780, 1783–1798, Accession 22408b (also Miscellaneous Reel 1140).
The first section of this volume includes accounts for the period 1764–1775. This section is followed by an index to the remainder of the volume, which includes accounts for the years 1778, 1780 and 1783–1798. Also included are photostat copies of two pages of the second section of the volume obtained at a later date. The majority of the entries relate to Henry's legal practice. One account, however, refers to articles purchased to furnish the palace "when I was first app'[ointe]d Gov'[erno]r."

Henry was as complete a master of Virginia politics as Samuel Adams was of Massachusetts politics. Both were early advocates of independence. When independence came, Henry became the Commonwealth of Virginia's first governor. One of his most important acts was sending George Rogers Clark to expel the British from the Illinois country, then part of a Virginia county. Clark's success ensured that the Midwest became part of the United States rather than part of British Canada. Image rights owned by the Virginia Historical Society. Do not use without permission.

Patrick Henry
Patrick Henry (1736-1799), was a statesman, lawyer, and orator at the time of the Revolutionary War in America. He is remembered most for the words, "Give me liberty or give me death" which, according to tradition, he spoke in 1775 before the Virginia militia armed for defense of the colony against England. Every word he said got people's attention.
Patrick Henry was born in Hanover County, Virginia. He was in school for a short time, taught by his father who had a good education. Henry was also a store owner. His talent as orator won him fame in Virginia in a noted lawsuit called the Parson's Cause.
In 1764, Henry was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses. His speech against the Stamp Act in 1765 is one of his greatest orations. In according to tradition, he said these quoted words: "Caesar had his Brutus, Charles the First his Cromwell and George the Third may profit by their example. If this be treason, make the most of it."
In August 1774, the colony of Virginia elected Henry a delegate to the First Continental Congress. He was also a member of the Second Continental for a sort time in 1775. Later he became a commander in chief of Virginia's military forces. He was governor of Virginia in the Revolutionary War. Henry worked harder to make Virginia a better place and he did.

It was Patrick Henry who was the man who, in Jefferson's words, "set the ball of Revolution rolling" in Virginia. The famous speech in which Henry declared, "Give me liberty, or give me death!" was given at St. John's Church in Richmond, during the debates of the Second Virginia Convention, and Henry's stirring rhetoric helped swing sentiment to his belief that Virginians must prepare for the inevitable conflict with Great Britain.
Patrick Henry speaks again to modern audiences as presented by Michael Wells . Mr. Wells has performed as Patrick Henry since 1992 at historic St. John's Church in Richmond, Virginia. Lawyer, Patriot and Orator P atrick Henry was, in truth, our first National Hero. John Randolph said simply: "Patrick Henry was the greatest orator who ever lived." From the time that he appeared in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1760, to take his attorney's exam, he was a living symbol of America's struggle for liberty and self-government. He became the most powerful political figure of his time. I n 1765, Henry directly challenged the crown in one of his first speeches as he bravely said, "Caesar had his Brutus; Charles the first, his Cromwell; and George the third-may profit by their examples." H e was elected as the first Governor of Virginia in 1776 and was re-elected for three terms. He was succeeded by Thomas Jefferson. Patrick Henry's life story is inseparable from Virginia history.

Patrick Henry was not a Baptist, but he was a great friend to Baptists and to our country. He was the Commander-in-Chief of the Virginia Militia and a member of the Continental Congress, the Virginia General Assembly and House of Burgesses and was involved in writing the Constitution of Virginia. He holds the distinction of being the only Governor in U.S. history to be elected five times as Governor of his State. One of the events he is famous for was his courtroom defense of three Baptist preachers. Prior to the Revolution, in 1768, Patrick rode many miles on horseback to a trial in Spotsylvania Co., Virginia. He entered the courtroom where three Baptist ministers were being tried for preaching the gospel without approval of the Episcopalian church. In the midst of the proceedings he interrupted; "May it please your lordships, what did I hear read? Did I hear an expression that these men, whom you worships are about to try for misdemeanor, are charged with preaching the gospel of the Son of God?" The preachers were released.
