I like dreams of the future better than the history of the past. It is natural to man to indulge in the illusion of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against the painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren, till she transforms us into beasts. I know no way of judging the future but by the past. Perfect freedom is as necessary to the health and vigor of commerce as it is to the health and vigor of citizenship.

As individuals professing a holy religion, it is our bounden duty to forgive injuries done us as individuals. But when the character of Christian you add the character of patriot, you are in a different situation. Our mild and holy system of religion inculcates an admirable maxim of forbearance. If your enemy smite one cheek, turn the other to him. But you must stop there. You cannot apply this to your country. As members of a social community, this maxim does not apply to you. When you consider injuries done to your country your political duty tells you of vengeance. Forgive as a private man, but never forgive public injuries. Observations of this nature are exceedingly unpleasant, but it is my duty to use them."

    Summary of Religious Views:
Following the Revolution, Patrick Henry supported proposals in the Virginia legislature that would have essentially established the Episcopal church in that state. The proposed measures would have "incorporated" the Episcopal clergy, and would have provided financial support to the church through tax levies. These bills were ultimately defeated, due largely to the efforts of James Madison and some of his allies.
    Quotations:
"Much learning hath been displayed to show the necessity of establishing one church in England in the present form. But these reasonings do not reach the case of this colony . . . ". . . A general toleration of Religion appears to me the best means of peopling our country. . . "When I say that the article of religion is deemed a trifle by our people in the general, I assert a known truth. But when we suppose that the poorer sort of European emigrants set as light by it, we are greatly mistaken. The free exercise of religion hath stocked the Northern part of the continent with inhabitants; and altho' Europe hath in great measure adopted a more moderate policy, yet the profession of Protestantism is extremely inconvenient in many places there. A Calvinist, a Lutheran, or Quaker, who hath felt these inconveniences in Europe, sails not to Virginia, where they are felt perhaps in a (greater degree)."

PATRICK HENRY .............. BIOGRAPHY .............. Henry, Patrick (1736-1799) Statesman: Henry received little formal education but, after unsuccessful attempts at farming and operating a general store, he began studying law informally. After less than four months of unsupervised study, he was admitted to the bar in Williamsburg, Virginia. Henry was an active attorney throughout his political involvement with the revolution, unlike many of his political colleagues, whose legal practices were only tangential to their main efforts. Henry's first important case was the Parson's Cause Controversy, which set him defending the rights of Virginia taxpayers against the claims of Anglican clergy. He entered the Virginia House of Burgesses in May 1765, just as Britain was passing the Stamp Act, which he denounced eloquently.
He served in the First Continental Congress in 1774, and gave his famous "Give me liberty or give me death" speech in May 1775 in Virginia, although it is difficult to prove the authenticity of the precise wording of the oration.
Henry's speaking style was a departure from the tradition of American oratory, which emphasized formal learning and allusions to classical texts. The new style, represented by Henry, resembled nothing so much as an evangelical preacher, with biblical references and, according to his critics, an appeal to passion rather than reason. This made Henry one of the first popular politicians in the emerging United States. After the war, Henry was a strong opponent of the proposed federal Constitution, believing that too much power was being given to the central government. His critique of the proposed Constitution at the Virginia Ratifying Convention of 1788 stands as a clear and thorough statement of the states' rights position.

Yet after the war Henry urged restoration of the property and rights of Loyalists, arguing that they would make good citizens of the new Republic, and he bitterly opposed the Constitution as a threat to the liberties of the people and the rights of the states. Actually, Henry had seen the union of the rebellious colonies as a marriage of convenience, a kind of defensive alliance to protect already achieved liberties. He believed that once the war had been won a strong central authority was no longer needed. Times were hard in Virginia and he favored tax cuts and the issuance of paper money by the state as a way of providing relief for debtors and small farmers, policies that Virginia nationalists like James Madison and George Washington opposed. When their concerns resulted in the calling of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Henry was elected as a delegate, but he refused to serve. After the new Constitution was published he dismissed it as an affront to "the spirit of republicanism" and the "genius of democracy." The preamble, beginning "We the people

Introduction Henry, Patrick (1736-1799), American orator and statesman, and a leading patriot of the American Revolution. Henry was one of the most eloquent advocates of individual freedom and states’ rights in the early years of United States history. His famous words, “Give me liberty or give me death!” have become a part of the American heritage. II. Early Years Henry was born on May 29, 1736, in Hanover County, Virginia, and was raised on a tobacco plantation. He attended a local school for only a short time and was tutored by his father, John Henry, a surveyor and county justice. As a young man, Henry entered the world of commerce, but he proved to be a poor businessman: He failed as a storekeeper and as a farmer within the space of seven years. Henry married Sarah Shelton in 1756 and turned his attention to the study of law. He received his license to practice law in 1760 and soon acquired a large country clientele. By 1770 Henry was specializing in appeals before the Virginia General Court. His skill in criminal cases was perhaps unsurpassed by any other American lawyer of the period.
