SUDBURY DISTRICT CHAPLEAU Louis Hemon 1880-1913 NAUGHTON Whitefish Lake Post The Hudson's Bay Company constructed a trading post at Whitefish Lake about 1824 to discourage independent traders from infiltrating the area north of the French River. In 1887 the post was moved to Naughton to facilitate rail shipments. (At the site of the former post, Regional Road 55, Naughton about 17 km southwest of Sudbury) Salter's Meridian 1856 While surveying a meridian line north from Whitefish Lake in 1856 Albert Salter first noted the presence of mineral deposits in this remote region. In 1900 the Creighton Mine went into production at the site of Salter's original discovery and for the next thirty years was the world's leading nickel producer. (Regional Road 55 (near the site of the meridian line), Naughton about 17 km southwest of Sudbury) SUDBURY The Sudbury Basin A geological formation of great complexity, the Sudbury basin is a roughly oval-shaped depression some sixty kilometres long containing vast ore deposits. One respected scientific theory attributes the origin of the basin to the impact of a gigantic meteorite. (In Bell Park, Elizabeth Street, Sudbury) The Founding of Sudbury The establishment of a CPR work camp in 1883 marked the beginning of Sudbury. Located on the rim of the Sudbury basin, in a region rich in natural resources, the frontier community was soon flourishing as a service centre for logging and mining operations in the vicinity. Louis Hémon Navigation Louis Hémon (1880-1913), un aventurier français, n'a passé que dix-huit mois au Québec. Il avait déjà publié quelques romans avant de venir au Canada, probablement dans le but de trouver de nouvelles sources d'inspiration. Il fait un séjour, comme aide-fermier, à Péribonka jusqu'en 1913, au Lac-Saint-Jean (a St-Gédéon, pour coordonner ses notes et rédiger son récit); de retour à Montréal, où il s'engagea comme traducteur dans une maison de commerce. Le matin, il arrivait à son bureau une heure avant les autres employés, et copiait à la machine le manuscrit de son roman. Son roman terminé, il l'envoie à son éditeur français et décide de reprendre la route, cette fois-ci vers l'Ouest canadien. Malheureusement, il est happé le 8 juillet par un train dans le nord de l'Ontario, si bien qu'il ne saura jamais que son roman fut l'un des plus gros succès d'édition de son temps. Vie et oeuvre Un roman célèbre, Maria Chapdelaine «En août 1907, Louis Hémon envoyait au Temps une longue nouvelle, Lizzie Blakeston, qui parut du 3 au 8 mars 1908, et qui fut ensuite recueillie dans La Belle que voilà. Ce livre fut publié dans la collection des « Cahiers verts », comme aussi Colin-Maillard, roman londonien. Le Temps avait reçu le manuscrit, flatteusement apprécié par son lecteur, mais qui fut retourné pour des raisons d'opportunité.

A message to you about "FEAR" from MY FAIR LADY translated by William Aspenwall Bradley The MacMillan Company, New York I AM going, as one of Kipling's characters, the naturalist Hans Breitmann, puts it, to tell you a story which you will not believe. It is about a man who lived very peaceably on his income, was considered all his life to be perfectly normal and well balanced, enjoyed to the very end the esteem of his equals and the respect of his trades-people, and died in a singular manner. "It was not the thing," apparently, for a smart-looking man whom I met day after day, on this beach-boulevard, and it was probably that which attracted us to each other. We exchanged severe opinions, one afternoon, concerning the locality and its inhabitants; and next day, happening to meet at bath-time, we swam together, with easy strokes, out to where the sea, far from the little children playing on the sand, from the overdressed young ladies and from the befrogged orchestras, really resembles the sea and recovers its independence. He swam perfectly, with neither the impeccable style of a Hoggarty, nor the formidable foot-thrust of a Jarvis, but like a man who is accustomed to the water and is at home in it. Thereafter we took our baths together regularly. He was not talkative and I was even less curious, so that several weeks passed without either of us bothering to find out about the other anything more than he had volunteered. He announced to me one morning that he was leaving that very evening, adding, somewhat to my surprise, that he lived on a little property in Devon, and that he would be happy to see me there if I could find time to go and spend several days with him. He dazzled me with the delights of smoking a pipe face down in the thick grass, and spoke to me of a pond which belonged to him and compared with which the sea, at Hastings, was merely a dirty basin, without charm. I accepted his invitation and acted upon it a month later.
