I have been hooked on Hazlitt for better than fifteen
years. I have read most all of the books by and
about Hazlitt. While I was not singularly devoted
to the subject, nonetheless, my computer files
dealing with Hazlitt and his times swelled and now
contain a wealth of notes in reasonably good form
and order. Through the years Margo and I have traveled to England and got on to Hazlitt's trail and in the process have visited: Wem, Maidstone, Bristol coast, the Lake District, Winterslow and London. All along I made a number of renewed promises to myself to put my thoughts on Hazlitt (and related subjects) up on the 'net. Well, I have now (May, 2004) made a start. Found this material Helpful?

    Chapter One:-
"America." In 1775, fighting had broken out between British soldiers and the English colonists in North America. Great Britain determined to put down what they thought was a small revolt of ill-equipped men in one place in one colony, a revolt again, so the English thought that had little popular support in the colonies. It was a matter of nipping things in the bud. By 1776, the British leaders were beginning to realize they had an extensive and difficult problem on their hands. In June of 1777, the English general, John Burgoyne, led 7,000 men south from Quebec so to occupy Crown Point and obliged the Americans to evacuate Fort Ticonderoga which the rebellious colonists had taken two years earlier. Although the long march had taken its toll on Burgoyne's soldiers, they continued to push forward, such that, by September, they were approaching Saratoga, and there a battle broke out with the entrenched Americans. In the meantime, another American force had circled around and cut Burgoyne's retreat route by destroying his boats at Lake George. On October the 16th, having no choice, Burgoyne surrendered. The tidings of Burgoyne's surrender had reached Europe that December and the French king lost no time expressing his views on the matter. On February 6th, 1778, the French officially become allied with the new nation by concluding a treaty in respect to trade.

    William Hazlitt
    Profile
Essayist and critic; born at Maidstone the son of a minister and spent several years of his early life with his parents in America. A few months after their return to England in 1787 his father was appointed minister of the chapel in Noble Street, Wem , in Shropshire and William spent the rest of his childhood and youth here. His home, now called Hazlitt House, still stands in Noble Street as a private dwelling. He was educated at private schools and often accompanied his mother and sister to gatherings of ladies in and around Wem, part of the social and pastoral work expected of a minister's family. William was a great admirer of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and when the poet, about to become a minister himself, preached a probationary sermon at the Unitarian Church in Shrewsbury he walked all the way there in freezing weather to hear him. Hazlitt was bitterly disappointed when Coleridge received an annuity from Josiah Wedgwood, which enabled him to pursue a literary career, for this allowed him to leave Shrewsbury and prevented Hazlitt from making what he had hoped would be a close friendship. Hazlitt at this time was around nineteen years of age and of course, embarking on a literary career himself, was soon to become a friend of the Romantic poets. Among his own best works are Characters of Shakespeare's plays Lectures on the English poets (1818-19) and The spirit of the age From

A great mind is one that can forget or look beyond itself. A strong passion for any object will ensure success, for the desire of the end will point out the means. Almost every sect of Christianity is a perversion of its essence, to accomodate it to the prejudices of the world. A hypocrite despises those whom he deceives, but has no respect for himself. He would make a dupe of himself too, if he could.

William Hazlitt William Hazlitt was the son of a Unitarian minister. He went to Paris in his youth with the aim of becoming a painter, but gradually convinced himself that he could not excel in this art. He then turned to journalism and literature, and came into close association with Wordsworth, Coleridge, Lamb, Hunt, and others of the Romantic School. He was, however, of a sensitive and difficult temperament, and sooner or later quarrelled with most of his friends. Though a worshiper of Napoleon, whose life he wrote, he was a strong liberal in politics, and supposed himself persecuted for his opinions. Of all Hazlitt's voluminous writings, those which retain most value to-day are his literary criticisms and his essays on general topics. His clear and vivacious style rose at times to a rare beauty; and when the temper of his work was not marred by his touchiness and egotism he wrote with great charm and a delicate fancy. The essay Of Persons One Should Wish To Have Seen shows in a high degree the tact and grace of Hazlitt's best writing, and his power of creating a distinctive atmosphere. It would be difficult to find a paper of this length which conveys so much of the special quality of the literary circle which added so much to the glory of English letters in the first quarter of the nineteenth century.

We do not see nature with our eyes, but with our understandings and our hearts. Great thoughts reduced to practice become great acts. Simplicity of character is the natural result of profound thought. We are very much what others think of us. The reception our observations meet with gives us courage to proceed, or damps our efforts.
