The ‘Goat Lady’ vs. hay dealers Douglas County woman says sheriff, merchants stole “pets”; they say she should've paid her bills. July 7, 2002 By Eric Eckert eeckert@springfi.gannett.com The Springfield News-Leader 651 Boonville Springfield, MO 65806 417-836-1100 To submit a Letter to the Editor: letters@springfi.gannett.com (200-word limit) To submit a Guest Column: rleger@springfi.gannett.com (400-word limit) Ava, Missouri - Debbie Kaupert greets visitors to her Douglas County goat farm with a hesitant smile and a double-barreled shotgun. The gun is unloaded, but two shotgun shells sit snug in the pocket of her cutoff denim shorts. The former resident of California and Arizona, who's owned a small farm here the past three years, says she's taking no chances. “I'm scared to death of these people around here,” Kaupert says. “We're getting outta here as soon as we make sure the goats are moved and safe.” Kaupert — known in Douglas County and on Internet chat rooms as the “Goat Lady” — had 69 of her estimated 80 animals removed by Sheriff Gary Koop on June 17 to settle a $851 debt to a local hay dealer. Acting on a court order, Koop supervised the removal of the goats, which were to be sold at auction to pay Kaupert’s debt to Harold and Lyndell Lakey.

The 161 Basic Books for an Abraham Lincoln Library The Lincoln collector, confronted with approximately 10,000 books and pamphlets relating to Abraham Lincoln, must wonder if he has tackled too vast a subject. No other historical personage, excepting Napoleon, has been studied and written about as much as our 16th President. And the list of Lincoln publications continues to grow at a steady pace. We have always felt the collector should have an attainable goal; that is, a selective list of books which would offer what is considered to be the most authoritative and best written works on the subject. But the myriad of choices presents a profound problem for serious readers and collectors. Where does one begin assembling a basic Lincoln library? To address this problem, we offer the following list of 161 titles pertaining to Lincoln's life and times. [For those who ask, we chose 161 because that is what number the essential list came to.] We don't expect everyone to agree with our choices, but this list does represent the consensus of leading authorities in the field of Lincoln scholarship. But we accept responsibility for the final choice. This list has not been prepared in catalogue form. Therefore, we simply list each title, indicating the major editions for both scholarship and collecting. We list the first trade edition only if there are no major additions in subsequent (if any) editions. If there is a reprint with added material, or a limited edition of note, we will list the first edition after (a) and other significant editions after (b), (c), etc.

Robert Douglas Burns
Extension Communications Specialist
Job Description
My primary responsibility is to ensure that the general public as well as our primary clientele is made aware of the efforts and accomplishments of both Extension and Experiment Station faculty at the Overton Center and in Extension District 5. In other words, I grease the wheels of the mass media juggernaut while trying to keep Overton Center and County personnel from being ground into the mud in the process. In practice, this mission includes:
  • Writing news releases and magazine articles for distribution within the region, the state and occasionally, the nation.
  • Building and maintaining the Overton Center's World Wide Web site.
  • Acting as a public relations consultant for the 22 county Extension offices of District 5
  • Editing and designing, upon request, how-to fact sheets and information booklets for Overton-based Extension Specialists.
  • Building or augmenting photograph-based table-top marketing exhibits and displays.
  • Never turning away any Extension or Experiment station personnel who come to me for help with publications, whether print or electronic.

From Fort Douglas to the Forks
by Anne Matheson Henderson
MHS Transactions Series 3, Number 23, 1966-67 season
To those of us who have grown up in Winnipeg the names "Point Douglas" and "The Forks" should be familiar but to the newcomer they are for the most part unknown. "East of Main" to the average resident means, if anything, the C.P.R. and C.N.R. and in between warehouses, wholesales, small industrial plants, with here and there a very old house, and through the whole district a network of tracks, bridges, subways and overpasses. The junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers had been known throughout the fur trade as "The Forks" for many years before the North West Company came there to build Fort Gibraltar, and the Hudson's Bay Company their small stores depot. Point Douglas came into existence only after the arrival of the Lord Selkirk Settlers, marking as it did the first settlement in Western Canada. Although more than sixty years would pass before Winnipeg became a city, its foundation was firmly set in the growth and development of the narrow strip of land along the west bank of the Red River, north from The Forks to Point Douglas and the Scotch settlement beyond. Some years prior to the coming of the Selkirk Settlers, the Hudson's Bay Company had built a stores depot on the east side of the Red River in the neighborhood of to-day's St. Boniface Hospital, and it was there that Governor Miles Macdonell landed with the men of the 1811 working party on the 30
