MAGGIE DEVRIES: Forgotten women De Vries, a part-time editor for Victoria's Orca Book Publishers, was nominated Monday for a Governor General's Literary Award for her book, Missing Sarah: A Vancouver Woman Remembers her Vanished Sister. The book is about her sister, Sarah de Vries, whose DNA was discovered on Robert Pickton's Port Coquitlam pig farm. "I was stunned by the nomination. Such a thing hadn't crossed my mind," said de Vries, 42, who's based in Vancouver. "It's a recognition of a voice from the Vancouver Eastside. It feels like a recognition of that voice." De Vries's book details her sister's slide into drug addiction and prostitution. It contains numerous passages written by Sarah de Vries, such as diary entries, poems and childhood letters. One of a family of six children whose mother was called by death as early as 1875 each of us soon learned the lesson of self-reliance. In 1881, my father sold the last 80 acres of his preemption, on which there was a $200 mortgage for $1,000. He turned most of the balance of the $1,000 into stock. Good cows were purchased as low as $15 each. This was before the heavy range loss of 1880 and 1881 was known to the public. Come with me now and see two canvas covered wagons drawn by ox teams plodding along at the rate of 20 miles per day, followed by 35 head of cattle bound for Atkinson, Nebraska, which we never reached. The heavy snows of 1880 and 1881 reduced to water by chinook winds left mud holes a plenty. After reaching the little town of Lamberton, Minnesota, the road became only a trail. Here we camped our first night out. Rain had set in. We took refuge in a one-room abandoned cabin partly filled with corn but it afforded a better shelter than canvas. For cooking we used a hay burning sheet iron camp stove. Bacon and eggs, homemade bread with an abundance of milk for the children and hot coffee was the menu for the first few days out. Bakeries were unknown. Crackers were often substituted for bread. These were purchased in wooden boxes of bushel capacity.
