Nathaniel Hawthorne's best-known works include THE SCARLET LETTER (1850) and THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES (1851). Like Edgar Allan Poe, Hawthorne took a dark view of human nature. "Not to be deficient in this particular, the author has provided himself with a moral - the truth, namely, that the wrongdoing of one generation lives into the successive ones." (from The House of the Seven Gables Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts. His father, also Nathaniel, was a sea captain and descendent of John Hawthorne, one of the judges in the Salem witchcraft trials of 1692. He died when the young Nathaniel was four year old. Hawthorne grew up in seclusion with his widowed mother Elizabeth - and for the rest of her life they relied on each other for emotional solace. Later he wrote to his friend Henry Wadsworth Longfellow : "I have locked myself in a dungeon and I can't find the key to get out." Hawthorne was educated at the Bowdoin College in Maine (1821-24). In the school among his friends were Longfellow and Franklin Pierce, who became the 14th president of the U.S.

N athaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts, to a family that had been prominent in the area since colonial times. A rich lore of family and local history provided much of the material for Hawthorne's works. When Nathaniel was four, his father died on a voyage in Surinam, Dutch Guinea, but maternal relatives recognized his literary talent and financed his education at Bowdoin College. Among his classmates were many of the important literary and political figures of the day: writer Horatio Bridge, future Senator Jonathan Ciley, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and future President Franklin Pierce. These prominent friends supplied Hawthorne with government employment in the lean times, allowing him time to bloom as an author. L ike James Fenimore Cooper, Hawthorne was extremely concerned with conventionality; his first pseudonymously published short stories imitated Sir Walter Scott, as did his 1828 self-published Fanshawe . Hawthorne later formally withdrew most of this early work, discounting it as the work of inexperienced youth. From 1836 to 1844 the Boston-centered Transcendentalist movement, led by Ralph Waldo Emerson, was an important force in New England intellectual circles. The Transcendentalists believed that human existence transcended the sensory realm, and rejected formalism in favor of individual responsibility. Hawthorne's fiancee Sophia Peabody drew him into "the newness," and in 1841 Hawthorne invested $1500 in the Brook Farm Utopian Community, leaving disillusioned within a year. His later works show some Transcendentalist influence, including a belief in individual choice and consequence, and an emphasis on symbolism. As America's first true psychological novel

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne 1804 - 1864 The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804 - 1864) The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804 - 1864) Type of Work: Impressionistic fiction Setting Boston, Massachusetts; seventeenth century Principal Characters Hester Prynne, a condemned adulteress Pearl, her daughter Arthitr Dimmesdale, one of the community's ministers Rodger Chillingsworth, Hester's estranged husband (his assumed name) Story Overveiw Condemned to wear a bright red "A" over her breast wherever she went, Hester Prynne had been convicted of adultery by Boston's Puritan leaders; a child had been born to her during her husband's long absence. Emerging from the prisonhouse under the gaze of her neighbors, Hester surprised the townsfolk with her air of aloof and silent dignity Led to the town square, she ascended a scaffold, her babe cradled in her arms. There on the scaffold she suffered scorn and public admonishment. One "good woman" loud ly decried the elaborate letter Hester had embroidered into her frock: blazing scarlet, ornately fashioned and bordered with prominent gold stitching - the requisite token of her deed. A minister in the crowd denounced her crime and called on her to reveal the identity of her partner. Another minister, Arthur Dimmesdale, pled with her more gently. He, in compassion, also begged her to unmask her lover. Unknown to the multitude, however, Dimmesdale himself was that lover; his gentle prodding was in fact a distraught and convoluted effort to urge a confession from Hester which he knew she would never make-and which he could not find the courage to make for himself.

    Nathaniel Hawthorne
    American Writer
Nathaniel Hawthorne, a famous author, is best known for his novel The Scarlet Letter and for his short stories. Born on July 4, 1804, Hawthorne and his two sisters were raised, by his mother and uncle. After attending Bowdoin College, he wrote for some newspapers and magazines. Hawthorne had lots of money problems, and was thus unable to fully concentrate on writing. He was able to publish his classic work, The Scarlet Letter, in 1850. He followed with The House of Seven Gables in 1851. Hawthorne's writing was influenced by his love of reading and nature. As a child, Hawthorne was injured in a game of ball and spent several years mostly indoors, owing to the temporary lameness resulting from the injury. During that time he learned to love Shakespeare and The Pilgrim's Progress. For several years the Hawthorne family moved to Maine to live in the country. He later talked about this time as the happiest time of his life, Hawthorne went on to write a campaign biography for his old college friend, Franklin Pierce, and when Pierce was elected president, he appointed Hawthorne U.S. consul at Liverpool, England. After spending several years abroad, Hawthorne returned to America in 1860. He died on May 11, 1864. Hawthorne, along with his contemporaries, Herman Melville and Edgar Allan Poe, is revered today for his role in establishing an American tradition of literature.
