Classroom Issues and Strategies
Some students find Hawthorne too gloomy, too dense, and too complex. And few understand Puritan beliefs about self, sin, and America's moral mission as they evolved into the antithetical beliefs of transcendentalism. Even fewer recognize how persistently Hawthorne involves the reader in his own efforts to probe such antitheses. To address these problems, try approaching Hawthorne as a riddler and wry joker who challenged all authority including his own. Students enjoy recognizing Hawthorne's self-mockery and his various forms of ironic self-presentation. Though self-mockery is most overt in Hawthorne's letters and prefaces (the introduction to "Rappaccini's Daughter," for example), students can quickly discern the skepticism underlying Hawthorne's uses of laughter, his assessments of America's Puritan past and quotidian present, and his anatomization of his major characters. Introduce recurrent patterns of character, theme, image, and so forth, then invite students to identify variations on those patterns within Hawthorne's works. Comment on Hawthorne's attempts to mediate between Puritan beliefs and Emerson's, then encourage students to locate how each of his fictions incorporates, accepts, or rejects particular beliefs. Alert them to Hawthorne's assumptions about what human wholeness and happiness requireincluding the interrelationship of the mind, heart, spirit, will, and imagination, and accommodation though not indulgence of bodily needs.

Nathaniel Hawthorne
After the death of her husband Mrs Hawthorne removed to the house of her father with her little family of children. Of the boyhood of Nathaniel no particulars have reached us, except that he was fond of taking long walks alone, and that he used to declare to his mother that he would go to sea some time and would never return. Among the books that he is known to have read as a child were Shakespeare Milton Pope and Thomson, The Castle of Indolence Spectator , and which displayed considerable vivacity and talent. He speculated upon the profession that he would follow, with a sort of prophetic insight into his future. "I do not want to be a doctor and live by men's diseases," he wrote to his mother, "nor a minister to live by their sins, nor a lawyer and live by their quarrels. So I don't see that there is anything left for me but to be an author. How would you like some day to see a whole shelf full of books, written by your son, with 'Hawthorne's Works' printed on their backs?"
Nathaniel entered Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, in the autumn of 1821, where he became acquainted with two students who were destined to distinction - Henry W. Longfellow and Franklin Pierce. He was an excellent classical scholar, his Latin compositions, even in his freshman year, being remarkable for their elegance, while his Greek (which was less) was good. He made graceful translations from the Roman poets, and wrote several English poems which were creditable to him. After graduation three years later (1825) he returned to Salem, and to a life of isolation. He devoted his mornings to study, his afternoons to writing, and his evenings to long walks along the rocky coast. He was scarcely known by sight to his townsmen, and he held so little communication with the members of his own family that his meals were frequently left. The name of Nathaniel Hawthorne finally became known to his countrymen as a writer in

Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1804-1864 Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1804. His father was a sea captain and descendent of John Hawthorne, one of the judges in the Salem witchcraft trials of 1692. He died when the young Nathaniel was four year old. Hawthorne grew up in seclusion with his widowed mother - and for the rest of her life they relied on each other for emotional solace. Between the years 1825 and 1836 Hawthorne worked as a writer and contributor to periodicals. He married in 1842 Sophia Peabody, an active participant in the Transcendentalist movement, and settled with her in Concord. A growing family and mounting debts compelled their return to Salem. Hawthorne was unable to earn a living as a writer and in 1846 he was appointed surveyor of the Port of Salem, where he worked for three years. Nathaniel Hawthorne died at Plymouth, New Hampshire, on May 18th, 1864.

    Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864)
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts on Independence Day (July 4), 1804. His father, who was a sea captain, died when Nathaniel was four years old. Nathaniel went to Bowdoin College in Maine, and was a classmate of Henry Longfellow. After his graduation Hawthorne lived for eleven years at Salem, which was to become the setting of his greatest novel, The Scarlet Letter (1850), and his short stories. During this time he tried his hand at sketches and travelled about New England. He was also reading much in the Puritan literature of New England. Hawthorne's first tales appeared in 1830. Others were collected as Twice-Told Tales, first issued in 1837. A second volume, Mosses from an Old Manse (containing Young Goodman Brown), came out in 1846. In the meantime Hawthorne had taken a job at the Boston Custom House (1839-41). For a time (1841) he was a member of the Brook Farm community at West Roxbury (now in Boston). The experience of his life in the community he later described ironically in The Blithedale Romance.

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) Biography Nathaniel Hawthorne biography was written by Vanessa Gordon, December 2000, student in En 272 (Modern American Short Fiction), New Hampshire Technical Institute, Concord, New Hampshire. Nathaniel Hawthorne, one of the great American novelist and short story writers, was born on July 4, 1804, in Salem Massachusetts (Pennell, 1999, p.1). Hawthorne was the only son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Hathorne. Nathaniel was the second born Nathaniel Hawthorne's father passed away when he was only four years old. This happening to Hawthorne family only made Nathaniel, his mother, and his siblings much closer. After his father died, the family was in such a poor financial situation that they moved in with Elizabeth's parents. Hawthorne was not the biggest fan of school. He was injured when he was playing basketball. He actually enjoyed his injury because he got to be tutored at home. "Hawthorne enrolled at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine in 1821. By his own accounts not the most diligent of students, he graduated eighteenth in his class of forty-five" (Pennell, 1999, p. 2). During his time at Bowdoin College, Hawthorne made many friendships with people who were very important later on in their lives. These people include Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, future president Franklin Pierce, Jonathan Cilley, and Horatio Bridge. Bridge and Hawthorne later on became lifelong friends.
