Jim Hawkins, le héros de Treasure Island Présentation générale. Liste des principaux auteurs britanniques. Où trouver des romans d'aventures britanniques? Auteurs d'autres pays. ...

A REPENTANT SINNER.
It was, I believe, mainly as a compliment to me that Miss Audrey
Liston was asked to Poltons. Miss Liston and I were very good
friends, and my cousin Dora Polton thought, as she informed me,
that it would be nice for me to have someone I could talk to
about "books and so on." I did not complain. Miss Liston was a
pleasant young woman of six-and-twenty; I liked her very much except on paper, and I was aware that she made it a point of duty to read something at least of what I wrote. She was in the habit of describing herself as an "authoress in a small way." If it were pointed out that six three-volume novels in three years (the term of her literary activity, at the time of which I write) could hardly be called "a small way," she would smile modestly and say that it was not really much; and if she were

Thanks to all who have made this information available. It is certain to include errors and omissions. Please help improve this by sharing corrections and additions. In September, 1999 I removed John Hawkins and Mary Dewe from this site. That John may be a descendant of Sir John Hawkins, but I have never seen evidence that his children included my Philemon Hawkins. If you have such information and will share it with me, I will be very grateful. I have included two "missing generations" above my Philemon Hawkins b 1690. In October, 2000 I separated the family of Thomas Hawkins of Rappahannock Co., VA (who was closely aligned with Thomas Lucas) and show them on another page. Though I am not known to be related to them, I hope others can help clear up confusion about this branch. I have known for many years of my family's descent from Sir John Hawkins, cousin of Sir Francis Drake, and list below the combined family information from dozens of sources. One of these sources has records from the church in Devon where Hawkins christenings and burials were recorded between 1610 and 1650, and he feels it is unlikely that Philemon Hawkins of Virginia is descended from Sir John Hawkins, at least not in lineage most commonly reported. I appreciate his assistance, and include notes from the microfilm. Search for "film" to find those records below quickly.

Hawkins or Hawkyns, Sir John Hawkins or Hawkyns, Sir John, Drake . Probably acting as an agent for Lord Burghley, Hawkins pretended to betray Queen Elizabeth I in offering (1571) his services to the Spanish, in order to obtain the release of prisoners and to discover plans for the proposed Spanish invasion of England. In 1571 he entered Parliament and subsequently became treasurer and comptroller of the navy. In this capacity he made a number of important improvements in ship construction and rigging. His enemies charged him with using his office to his personal financial advantage, but he was exonerated after an inquiry by a royal commission. In the great defeat of the Spanish Armada (1588), Hawkins commanded the Victory and was knighted for his services. In 1595 he set out on a new expedition to the West Indies under Drake but died and was buried at sea off Puerto Rico.
