Rupert of Hentzau Rupert of Hentzau (from the memoirs of Fritz von Tarlenheim) was published by Anthony Hope (Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins) in 1898, four years after his more well-known novel The Prisoner of Zenda. It is, of course, a sequel and continues the tale of Englishman Rupert Rassendyll who bears a striking resemblance to the King of Ruritania. Rudolf is in love with the Queen, who is unhappily married and when Rupert of Hentzau intercepts a love letter intended for Rupert he could find himself in serious trouble.

MARRIAGE BY COMPULSION.
It is a most anxious thing to be an absolute ruler," said Duke
Deodonato, "but I have made up my mind. The Doctor has convinced
me [here Dr. Fusbius, Ph. D., bowed very low] that marriage is
the best, noblest, wholesomest, and happiest of human
conditions."
"Your Highness will remember" began the President of the Council. "My lord, I have made up my mind," said Duke Deodonato. Thus speaking, the Duke took a large sheet of foolscap paper, and wrote rapidly for a moment or two. "There," he said, pushing the paper over to the President, "is the decree." "The decree, sir?" "I think three weeks afford ample space," said Duke Deodonato. "Three weeks, sir?" "For every man over twenty-one years of age in this Duchy to find himself a wife." "Your Highness," observed Dr. Fusbius, with deference, "will

Cupid, I met thee yesterday
With an empty quiver,
Coming from Clarinda's house
By the reedy river.
And I saw Clarinda stand
Near the pansies, weeping,
With her hands upon her breast All thine arrows keeping. FRIVOLOUS CUPID. I. RELUCTANCE. I. Neither life nor the lawn-tennis club was so full at Natterley that the news of Harry Sterling's return had not some importance. He came back, moreover, to assume a position very different from his old one. He had left Harrow now, departing in the sweet aroma of a long score against Eton at Lord's, and was to go up to Oxford in October. Now between a schoolboy and a University man there is a gulf, indicated unmistakably by the cigarette which adorned Harry's mouth as he walked down the street with a newly acquiescent father, and thoroughly realized by his old playmates. The young men greeted him as an equal, the boys

D.178 GEORGE ALEXANDER PAPERS 34 volumes The British actor-manager Sir George Alexander (1858-1918) was born in Reading, England. He began acting in amateur theatricals in 1875, and four years later embarked on a professional acting career, making his London debut in 1881. He played many roles in the leading companies, including Sir Henry Irving's Lyceum. In 1890 he produced his first play at the Avenue Theatre and in 1891 he became the manager of St. James's Theatre. Here he produced several of the major plays of the day such as Lady Windermere's Fan by Oscar Wilde (1892), The Second Mrs. Tanqueray by Sir Arthur Wing Pinero (1893), The Importance of Being Ernest by Oscar Wilde (1895), and The Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope (1896). The collection consists of thirty-four typed, bound scripts used during the production of the plays at St. James's Theatre. Those having manuscript revisions , stage directions, and photographs of the production are noted in the following list of the plays.
A related collection is the Alexander-Rideout Collection (D.305)

THE PRISONER OF ZENDA: notes on the translation
Rupert of Hentzau.
The main action takes place in Ruritania, a fictional country of Mitteleuropa whose name, like that of Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, has entered the English language. There are no shades of grey in The Prisoner of Zenda, A Christmas Carol. describing the little servant Joseph sharing a grave with three of his enemies: hardly the wife-swapping party that it suggests at the turn of the twenty-first century). The abundant dialogue in The Prisoner of Zenda is often rich and sometimes even racy. The long, rolling, periods beloved of the authors of nineteenth and early twentieth-century handbooks of Latin grammar have little to do with the everyday speech that here plays such a large part. On the other hand, there are possible (if less self-consciously aristocratic) models in extant plays, such as those of Terence, which illustrate the spoken word in a way that the bulk of preserved literature does not. I hope that critics will forgive (but tell me about) the solecisms which they will pretty certainly perceive as a consequence of my approach.
