    HER LETTER By
    Bret Harte
I'm sitting alone by the fire, Dressed just as I came from the dance, In a robe even you would admire, - It cost a cool thousand in France; I'm bediamonded out of all reason, My hair is done up in a cue: In short, sir, "the belle of the season" Is wasting an hour on you.
A dozen engagements I've broken; I left in the midst of a set; Likewise a proposal, half spoken, That waits - on the stairs - for me yet. They say he'll be rich - when he grows up, - And then he adores me indeed. And you, sir, are turning your nose up, Three thousand miles off, as you read.
"And how do I like my position?" "And what do I think of New York?" "And now, in my higher ambition, With whom do I waltz, flirt, or talk?" "And isn't it nice to have riches, And diamonds and silks, and all that?" "And aren't it a change to the ditches And tunnels of Poverty Flat?"
Well yes, - if you saw us out driving Each day in the park, four-in-hand; If you saw poor dear mamma contriving To look supernaturally grand, - If you saw papa's picture, as taken

This is a name that is so unexpected at Frimley and belongs to the poet and story writer of the Californian mining region, who was so widely known and appreciated in this country during the 1870s.He was born in Albany, in the Stare of New York in 1839, he was the son of a professor Greek at the local college. His father was dying while he was young. As was customary of in the States at that time, Bret Harte, travelled west to seek his fortune and at 17 began to follow quite a number of occupations in California where he became a messenger, miner, printer, teacher, secretary and then an editor The tales he described were vividly romantic of the hard crude life of the mining camps, and the sketches were accompanied by equally short poems, that were picturesque, humorous, pathetic and idyllic. For a short period of time he held a professorship at the University of California, but in 1871 he left and travelled to New York. His poetry had now been amassed and he became admired throughout the English speaking world. His writing continued and he also made many lecturing tours throughout the States. He was appointed the United States Consul in Germany in 1878, and on his trip there he stopped off in London to lecture on the emigrant movement with linked the Eastern and Western shores of America across the central barren lands.
