LOVE AND PHYSIC by: Bret Harte (1836-1902)
    CLEVER man was Dr. Digg;
    Misfortunes well he bore;
    He never lost his patience till
    He had no patients more;
    And though his practice once was large,
    It did not swell his gains;
    The pains he labored for were but
    The labor for his pains.
    The "art is long," his cash got short,
    And well might Galen dread it,
    For who will trust a name unknown
    When merit gets no credit?
    To marry seemed the only way
    To ease his mind of trouble;
    Misfortunes never singly come,
    And misery made him double.
    He had a patient, rich and fair,
    That hearts by scores was breaking,
    And as he once had felt her wrist,
    He thought her hand of taking;
    But what the law makes strangers do,
    Did strike his comprehension;
    Who live in these United States,
    Do first declare intention.
    And so he called. His beating heart
    With anxious fears was swelling,
    And half in habit took her hand
    And on her tongue was dwelling;
    But thrice tho' he essayed to speak,
    He stopp'd, and stuck, and blundered;
    For say, what mortal could be cool
    Whose pulse was most a hundred?

Bret Harte (1836-1902)
Original name FRANCIS BRETT HARTE American writer who helped create the local-colour school in American fiction.
Harte's family settled in New York City and Brooklyn in 1845. His education was spotty and irregular, but he inherited a love of books and managed to get some verses published at age 11. In 1854 he left for California and went into mining country on a brief trip that legend has expanded into a lengthy participation in, and intimate knowledge of, camp life. In 1857 he was employed by the Northern Californian, a weekly paper. There his support of Indians and Mexicans proved unpopular; after a massacre of Indians in 1860, which he editorially deplored, he found it advisable to leave town.

The writer of short stories such as "The Luck of Roaring Camp" grew up in Albany before his family moved to California. He joined the San Francisco Unitarian Church where Thomas Starr King helped to guide his writing, reading, and concern for the abolition of slavery. When Bret founded a newspaper, Northern California , his outraged editorial condemning drunken townsmen who had murdered many Indian women and children forced him to flee for his life.
Volumes of Bret Harte short fiction were published almost every year during his last twenty years.

Bret Harte, The Luck of Roaring Camp
Bret Harte (1836-1902) is known today as one of the classic writers of Western pulp fiction, a genre that flourished with the dime novel. Harte's earlier writings, like "The Luck of Roaring Camp" and Other Stories (1870), are widely considered classics not only of American popular culture but of American literature. Drawing on his own experiences in California's gold mining camps, Harte captures authentic stories which became more than just local color writing; his stories of this period spawned an explosion of regional writing. We will be reading selections from this collection: "The Luck of Roaring Camp," "The Outcasts of Poker Flat," and "Tennessee's Partner."
Questions to Think About:
1) What are the characteristics which identify the Western story as a genre? To answer this, refer to the selected reading from Richard Slotkin's Gunfighter Nation . What are the types of characters which appear in the Western story? What do they represent?
2) One of the most important aspects of the Western is the way in which Westerns as a genre reflect (and challenge) the founding story of the American nation. What is so "American" about the Western story genre? What values do they reflect? What internal struggles do they bury or alleviate and which do they accentuate in favor of establishing a more cohesive and hegemonic national identity?
3) How do Harte's stories reflect the realities of the California gold rush? What were the anxieties and hopes associated with that moment in American experience?

Bret Harte tackles Jones
in his poem "Off Scarborough"
Read more poems about JPJ Scores, perhaps hundreds, of artists have been drawn to the legend of John Paul Jones, crafting it into paintings, plays, songs, poems and stories. James Fennimore Cooper, Alexandre Dumas, Herman Melville, Sarah Orne Jewett, William Makepeace Thakery and the American novelist Winston Churchill are among the famous literary names who have taken a whack at depicting Jones. And let’s not forget Bret Harte (1836-1902), the cowboy poet, whose "Luck of Roaring Camp" and other works helped pump up the literary legends of the American West. By comparison, Jones’ rip-roaring reputation in 19 th century America was an apt character for Harte. Like many writers, Bret Harte focused on the famous battle between the BONHOMME RICHARD and HMS SERAPIS for his poem "Off Scarborough". The date of the poem’s appearance in Scribner's Monthly , (vol. 16, issue 4, August 1878) indicates it was a centennial tribute to one first and one of the bloodiest naval battles in American history.

    BRET HARTE (1836-1902)
    by John Pettie (1839-1893) Bret Harte was born in New York State, but in 1854, after the death of his father, his family moved to California. By the end of the decade he was writing clever sketches of frontier life for the San Francisco magazine Golden Era . His short stories, such as "The Luck of Roaring Camp" and "The Outcasts of Poker Flat," published in the late 1860s, provided ample proof of the rich literary potential that was to be found in the rough-hewn life of his state's gold-mining frontier.
    Harte, a restless soul, left for the East in 1871. In both Boston and New York, he found himself lionized as the West's most brilliant and promising writer. Nevertheless in 1878, Harte took a position as a commercial agent in Crefeld, Germany. In 1880 he became U.S. consul in Glasgow, Scotland, but, bored by the town and his duties, he traveled frequently to London and moved there in 1885.
    John Pettie, a Scotsman living in London and a member of its Royal Academy, was known for his historical paintings and portraits. The artist was clearly proud of this portrait, for he exhibited it at the Royal Academy in 1885 and at the Jubilee exhibition in Berlin the following year before he gave it as a gift to the sitter, with whom he had become friends. Oil on canvas, 1884

    THE IDYL OF RED GULCH by Bret Harte Harte's tale of a small town in California during the Gold Rush centers on a young schoolmistress, a drunken but charming young man, and a prostitute. The unusual triangle creates a quiet, moralistic tale with a few unexpected twists and turns. Go to the tale

  • Bret Harte I n t r o d u c t i o n Bret Harte is best known for his stories set in California in the years following the 1849 Gold Rush. Harte was an easterner by birth and education who went west in 1854 when he was 18 and lived in California until he was 36. He never really lived the life of the mining camps and small towns he wrote about, so his stories tend to mythologize the world he depicted, creating stereotypical characters and places that capture the flavor of the time. "The Idyl of Red Gulch" is one of these stories. "The Idyl of Red Gulch" depicts an incident in a small town in northern California. The three main characters are classic western archetypes the town drunk, the prostitute, and the schoolmistress and they are all portrayed in the manner we have learned to expect. The drunk has a charming side and a surprising past; the prostitute is a painted woman on the outside but a caring, frightened woman on the inside; and the schoolmistress is a stern but warm young woman who is loved by her students and respected by the townfolk.
