Twenty-third President (1889-1893) Eastman Johnson (1824-1906), charcoal and chalk on paper, circa 1895
Benjamin Harrison was a safe, clean, and loyal Republican. Combined with the cachet of being the grandson of President William Henry Harrison, those traits proved to be enough to win him the 1888 GOP presidential nomination. Once in office, he practiced a generally aloof style of leadership, which led even his supporters to view him as an "iceberg." This drawing of Harrison is thought to be a preliminary sketch for a large formal portrait by Eastman Johnson, which hangs today in the White House. Benjamin Harrison
Twenty-third President (1889-1893) Unidentified artist, woodcarving, 1888
This folk portrayal of Benjamin Harrison is a memento from his 1888 presidential campaign. Among the noteworthy aspects of the contest were the funds raised to promote Harrison's candidacy. Built up largely through donations from eastern businessmen who warmly supported Harrison's call for high protective tariffs, his presidential war chest contained in excess of $3 million. It was an extraordinarily large amount in the late nineteenth century.

Benjamin Harrison Benjamin Harrison, (1833-1901), 23d PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Inaugurated 100 years after George WASHINGTON, Benjamin Harrison was known as the "Centennial President." He inherited a distinguished name. His grandfather, William Henry HARRISON, was the 9th president of the United States. In colonial Virginia five successive generations of Benjamin Harrisons (1632-1791) compiled almost identical records as gentlemen of education and wealth, burgesses, councillors, and militia colonels. Fearless independence, a strong sense of justice, and high intelligence marked Harrison as a soldier, lawyer, humanitarian, and statesman-president. Ranked today as an average chief executive, in his own era he compiled a strong record of constitutional government that enabled the country to approach world power with prudence and caution. Compared with strong, appealing leaders like JACKSON, LINCOLN, and ROOSEVELT, Harrison was greater as a man than as a president.. Early Life and Education President Benjamin Harrison's father was John Scott Harrison (1809-1878), the only American to be the son of one president and the father of another. After college, John Scott Harrison managed a 2,000-acre (800-meter) family estate at North Bend, Ohio. In 1831, his first wife having died, he married Elizabeth Irwin, from Pennsylvania. The new bride eventually reared nine children.

Twenty-third U.S. President, great grandson of William Henry Harrison. Served through the Civil War, brevetted brigadier general. U.S. Senator elected president 1889.
ALS, 2 individual sheets, 8vo., Indianapolis, Indiana, Dec. 9, 1880, on decorative letterhead of the "Law Office of Harrison, Hines and Miller" Harrison writes to Carl R. M. Kelly of Louisville. He responds to an editorial in the Louisville Commercial of the previous day.
"Your editorial on the senatorial question in Indiana is so very kind and complimentary to me...The attempt to make it appear that there was or could be any personal unfriendliness between (?) and me was the work of those who were not friends to either of us. His withdrawal sets many mutual friends free to act for me."
In 1880 Harrison was chairman of the Indiana delegation to the Republican National Convention. Here he played a leading role in nominating Garfield for President. Harrison was suggested as a alternate presidential candidate but refused as he had been elected to US Senate that year. An interesting correspondence with good political association. Excellent. Benjamin Harrison Born on the Ohio River, Benjamin Harrison became our 23nd president at the age of 55. Despite his short height (5'6") giving him the nickname "Little Ben", he gave a contribution to our country by handling tariffs and signing economic bills, like the Anti-Trust Act. After Harrison's eduction at the Miami University in Ohio, he became a lawyer in Cinncinati and voted for Republicans. He moved to Indianapolis and married Caroline in 1855, after he was a Colonel in the Civil War. Later, he ran for governer of Indiana, but the Democrats defeated him. Thus, his political career began. When he won the presidential election of 1888, a lot of things happened. The Anti-Trust act was signed, making it so that if any company accumulates enough power to be considered a monopoly, it will be broken up to spread out the goods or services more fairly. Tariffs were being put on imported goods, so Harrison took off the tariff on sugar. Because of these tariffs, Congress had for the first time collected a billion-dollar surplus. To solve this problem, he gave the whole big wad out to Civil War veterans, some of which weren't even veterans! He lost the 1892 election. Then Benjamin Harrison, a successful politian, died in 1901.

Benjamin Harrison Nominated for President on the eighth ballot at the 1888 Republican Convention, Benjamin Harrison conducted one of the first "front-porch" campaigns, delivering short speeches to delegations that visited him in Indianapolis. As he was only 5 feet, 6 inches tall, Democrats called him "Little Ben"; Republicans replied that he was big enough to wear the hat of his grandfather, "Old Tippecanoe." Born in 1833 on a farm by the Ohio River below Cincinnati, Harrison attended Miami University in Ohio and read law in Cincinnati. He moved to Indianapolis, where he practiced law and campaigned for the Republican Party. He married Caroline Lavinia Scott in 1853. After the Civil Warhe was Colonel of the 70th Volunteer InfantryHarrison became a pillar of Indianapolis, enhancing his reputation as a brilliant lawyer. The Democrats defeated him for Governor of Indiana in 1876 by unfairly stigmatizing him as "Kid Gloves" Harrison. In the 1880's he served in the United States Senate, where he championed Indians. homesteaders, and Civil War veterans.
