Parents
Benjamin was the son of John Scott Harrison and Ramsey Elizabeth Irwin. John Scott Harrison was the son of former president and Indian fighter William Henry Harrison . John Scott lived a relatively uneventful life. He was, however, the only one of the Harrison children to live to an advanced age. He was elected to Congress twice. He was primarily occupied with the family farm in Ohio. He an his first wife Lucretia had three children. With his second wife Elizabeth he had six children. All but one of the children lived realtively short lives. His mother hated slavery on religious grounds. He was their second son of 14 children in all, two of whom were adopted.
Childhood
Benjamin was born in 1833 on his father's large farm on the Ohio River below Cincinnati at North Bend. John Harrisom was a successful farmer and the children grew up in a relatively affluent environment. Benjamin was an avid reader. His father's farm was located near his grandparents. He was allowed as a boy to use his grand'father's (President William Henry Harrison) library. He was 7 years old when his grandfather died. Benjamin and his wife eventually cared for his grandmother.

Whether you are a political campaign memorabilia buff, an historian or an antique enthusiast - The President Benjamin Harrison Home, which is now a museum dedicated to his life, is a must see when visiting Indianapolis. Benjamin Harrison was the 23rd President of the United States from 1889 to 1893. He was President 100 years after George Washington, which made him the Centennial President. The Harrison Home houses some 3,700 artifacts and 2,440 books. About 75% of the artifacts in the home actually belonged to the Harrison's. In the home the visitors see ten of the rooms with period furnishings and Harrison items. The third floor, originally a ball room, houses exhibits. A new exhibit opens every six months with Harrison Home artifacts and borrowed artifacts. Textiles, dresses, and other artifacts are displayed through out the house.

So often, when one thinks of politicians, one thinks of lawyers. While it is true that many politicians happen to be lawyers by trade, nowhere is it more evident than in the occupation of the Presidency. Twenty-six have held the occupation of lawyer. Amongst those gentlemen are some rather distinguished names such as Founding Fathers Adams, Jefferson and Madison, Supreme Court Justice Taft, and Franklin Roosevelt. For lawyers, that would be rather exclusive company to keep. Who's the best of these lawyers? Benjamin Harrison.

Name: Benjamin Harrison Life Span: Term Wife: Caroline Harrison BEFORE PRESIDENCY Benjamin Harrison was born on August 20, 1833 on a farm in North Bend Ohio. He attended Miami University in Ohio and read law in Cincinnati. He was the grandson of former president William Henry Harrison. Harrison then moved to Indianapolis, where he campaigned for the Republican Party and practiced law. In 1853, he married Caroline Lavinia Scott. Harrison was nominated for presidency on the eighth ballot at the 1888 Republican Convention. He was one of the first people to conduct a “front-porch” campaign, which was delivering short speeches to delegations that visited him in Indianapolis. Democrats made jokes about Harrison’s height, calling him “Little Ben”. Republicans replied by saying that he was big enough to wear the hat of his grandfather, “Old Tippercanoe”, since his grandfather was a former president. In the presidential election, Harrison went up against Grover Cleveland. Even though Harrison received less popular votes than Cleveland, he received more of the votes that mattered, the Electoral College. DURING PRESIDENCY Harrison faced a big problem while in office, the tariff issue. High tariff rates in effect made a surplus of money in the Treasury. Advocates of low-tariff said that surplus was hurting business. To cope with the Treasury surplus, the tariff was removed from imported raw sugar, and sugar growers within the United States were given two cents a pound bounty on their production. Harrison had successfully gotten rid of the surplus. However, after going up against former president Cleveland, Harrison lost.

Benjamin Harrison (August 20, 1833-March 13, 1901) Benjamin Harrison, (1833-1901), 23rd President of the United States of America. Inaugurated 100 years after George Washington, Benjamin Harrison was known as the "Centennial President." He inherited a distinguished name. His grandfather, William Henry Harrison, was the 9th president of the United States. In colonial Virginia five successive generations of Benjamin Harrisons (1632-1791) compiled almost identical records as gentlemen of education and wealth, burgesses, councillors, and militia colonels. Fearless independence, a strong sense of justice, and high intelligence marked Harrison as a soldier, lawyer, humanitarian, and statesman-president. Ranked today as an average chief executive, in his own era he compiled a strong record of constitutional government that enabled the country to approach world power with prudence and caution. Compared with strong, appealing leaders like Jackson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt, Harrison was greater as a man than as a president.. Early Life and Education President Benjamin Harrison's father was John Scott Harrison (1809-1878), the only American to be the son of one president and the father of another. After college, John Scott Harrison managed a 2,000-acre (800-meter) family estate at North Bend, Ohio. In 1831, his first wife having died, he married Elizabeth Irwin, from Pennsylvania. The new bride eventually reared nine children.
