, twenty-third president of the United States. After graduating from Miami University in Ohio, his birthplace, this grandson of President William Henry Harrison became a lawyer in Indianapolis. A staunch Republican, he fought for the Union and emerged from the Civil War a brigadier general. Despite an iceberglike personality and the loss of the gubernatorial campaign of 1876, he became Indiana's leading Republican. Although undistinguished during a term in the U.S. Senate, Harrison, as an inoffensive war hero from a crucial state, won the Republican nomination in 1888 with the help of James G. Blaine's endorsement. Because his supporters were strategically located, Harrison was elected by a majority in the electoral college even though the incumbent, Grover Cleveland, received more popular votes. Harrison influenced legislation and was an efficient executive, but his lackluster personality made his administration seem colorless. In conjunction with the Republican-controlled "Billion Dollar Congress" of 1890, his administration was remarkably productive. To wipe out the $100 million surplus of revenues over expenditures, Congress passed a generous Dependent and Disability Pension Act and the protectionist McKinley Tariff, which raised rates higher than ever before. Responding to pressure from the West, Congress approved the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, which required that the government buy 4.5 million ounces of silver each month and pay for it with Treasury certificates. Harrison managed the inflationist tendency of this legislation by redeeming the certificates in gold. At his request and to make good a plank in the Republican party's 1888 platform, Congress also passed the Sherman Antitrust Act, which was by far the most influential law passed during his administration.

Benjamin Harrison, 1833-1901
America's 23rd president Benjamin Harrison, grandson of president William Henry Harrison, served between the 2 terms of Grover Cleveland. Harrison had the distinctions of being the only grandson of a US president to become Chief Executive, the last Civil War general to serve as president, and was the shortest of America's presidents. Infamous in his day for his "billion dollar congress" Harrison died in 1901 at the age of 67. Born on August 20th, 1833 in North Bend, Ohio Benjamin Harrison was the son of farmer turned statesman John Scott Harrison, a US Senator, and his wife, Elizabeth Neal. Harrison's grandfather was William Henry Harrison, the famed frontiersman whose own presidential campaign motto had been "Tippecanoe and Tyler, Too!" for his famed Tippecanoe exploits. Benjamin lived on his father's Ohio farm and was a quiet and studious youth, who was accepted at the Miami University at Oxford, Ohio. While a student Harrison met the daughter of Dr. John Scott, the founder of the nearby Oxford Female Institute. Caroline Lavinia Scott, a fragile, outgoing female scholar charmed Harrison, and he proposed marriage soon after meeting the petite Ohioan (Harrison was himself barely 5'6" tall). The couple wed shortly after Harrison graduated college with honors, and by the time he completed 2 years of law and passed the Ohio bar had a son and daughter. Harrison moved his family to Indianapolis

Harrison's grandfather was William Henry Harrison, the hero of the Battle of Tippecanoe. Both Harrisons ran for the presidency two times, winning once and losing once. Before being elected president, both had been successful army commanders and had served in the United States Senate. Benjamin Harrison won the presidency with the help of a Republican campaign song called "Grandfather's Hat Fits Ben."
    Harrison's presidency
Harrison did more than any other president to increase respect for the flag of the United States. By his order, the flag waved above the White House and other government buildings. Harrison also urged that the flag be flown over every school in the land.
Congress passed the Sherman Antitrust Act during Harrison's administration, and provided for the building of a two-ocean navy of steel ships. The American frontier disappeared as pioneers took over the last unsettled areas of the West. Six new states joined the Union. Women squeezed into whalebone corsets so they could wear the new "hourglass" fashions. James A. Naismith originated basketball, and a lively tune called "Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay" helped usher in the period of the Gay Nineties.

Civil War General, United States Senator from Indiana,
and Twenty-third President of the United States. Benjamin Harrison came from a family with many years of political service. His great-grandfather, Benjamin Harrison V, is a signer of the Declaration of Independence and governor of Virginia. William Henry Harrison, his grandfather, was the first governor of the Indiana Territory, congressman, senator, and the ninth President of the United States. His father, John Scott Harrison, was a representative from the state of Ohio. The Harrison family record of service to the United States government is matched by few other families through-out history. Born on August 20, 1833, in North Bend, Ohio, Harrison spent his youth on his grandfathers estate. He received his education at Farmers' College and then attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. After graduation in 1852, he studied law for two years with a firm in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1853, Harrison married Caroline Scott. A year later, the Harrisons' moved to the growing city of Indianapolis, Indiana. Harrison opened a law practice in Indianapolis and in 1855 joined the firm of William Wallace (later Civil War general and father of Lew Wallace). In 1862, Harrison was asked by Indiana Governor Oliver P. Morton to recruit men for the 70th Indiana Voluntary Infantry. Harrison fought in many battles including the battles of Peach Tree Creek and Resaca, Georgia. By the end of the war Harrison was a Brigadier General.

    HISTORICAL SKETCH
As Benjamin Harrison entered the fourth year of his Presidential term in the spring of 1892, he had alienated some of the powerful men of his party, particularly Platt of New York and Quay of Pennsylvania. He was also on guarded terms with his former Secretary of State, James G. Blaine, who though ill (he died in January 1893) still had a good deal of political magnetism. He had also been considerably preoccupied with his wife's illness. His renomination was therefore less assured than is usual for a sitting President. As time approached for the Republican convention in Minneapolis in June 1892, Harrison's supporters, led by his friend Louis T. Michener and by Chauncey Depew and Frank Hiscock of New York, organized to secure his renomination. At a caucus chaired by Depew, they ascertained a "

He was the grandson of William Henry Harrison, ninth president of the United States, and the great-grandson of Benjamin Harrison, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. In 1852 he graduated from Miami University and went to Cincinnati, where he studied law. Two years later he removed to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he built up a large law practice and resided whenever not on duty in Washington. Harrison entered the Union army in 1862 as lieutenant, and shortly afterward was appointed colonel of the 70th Indiana Volunteers, which he organized. He fought bravely in the Atlanta campaign and about Nashville, and at the close of the war left the military with the rank of brevet brigadier-general. Harrison returned to Indianapolis and resumed the practice of law, but became a professor of international law at Leland Stanford Junior University. He was counsel for Venezuela before the arbitration tribunal in 1899 and chief representative of the United States at the Hague Peace Conference. He died March 13, 1901.
