    Benjamin Harrison Born: Birthplace:
North Bend, Ohio Benjamin Harrison was born in North Bend, Ohio, on Aug. 20, 1833, the grandson of William Henry Harrison, the ninth president. A graduate of Miami University in Ohio, he took up the law in Indiana and became active in Republican politics. In 1853, he married Caroline Lavinia Scott. During the Civil War, he rose to brigadier general. A sound-money Republican, he was elected senator from Indiana in 1880. In 1888, he received the Republican nomination for president on the eighth ballot. Though behind on the popular vote, he won over Grover Cleveland in the electoral college by 233 to 168. As president, Harrison failed to please either the bosses or the reform element in the party. In foreign affairs he backed Secretary of State Blaine, whose policy foreshadowed later American imperialism. Harrison was renominated in 1892 but lost to Cleveland. His wife died in the White House in 1892 and Harrison married her niece, Mary Scott (Lord) Dimmick, in 1896. After his presidency, he resumed law practice. He died in Indianapolis on March 13, 1901. Early Life Harrison was from a wealthy and politically prominent Virginia family. His great-grandfather, for whom he was named, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence ( see Harrison, Benjamin (1726?-1791)). His grandfather, William Henry Harrison, became president of the United States in 1841 when Benjamin was seven. Harrison was born in his grandfather's home in North Bend, in southwestern Ohio, in 1833 and was raised on his father's farm a few miles away. His parents were Elizabeth Irwin Harrison and John Scott Harrison, who had served two terms in the Congress of the United States. His father struggled to support a large family, but he managed to send Benjamin and his older brother to Farmers' College, near Cincinnati. After two years, Benjamin transferred to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He graduated in 1852. A year later he married a college friend, Caroline Lavinia Scott, daughter of the president of the Oxford Female Institute (later absorbed by Miami University). The couple had a son, Russell, and a daughter, Mary. "Harrison, Benjamin (1833-1901)," Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2004

Benjamin Harrison
Twenty-third President (1889-1893)
Much like his presidential grandfather William Henry Harrison, Benjamin Harrison did not owe his White House nomination of 1888 to lustrous performances in lesser political offices. Rather, he was a safe, clean, and loyal Republican. That, along with his kinship with a former President, seemed to be quite enough to earn him his party's endorsement. Known as the "iceberg," Harrison was unusually detached from the normal hurly-burly of politics, and in domestic matters, his presidential style was essentially passive. As a result, he took little part in shaping the major congressional measures of his administration, including the landmark Sherman Antitrust Act. In foreign policy, however, Harrison exercised more influence, and his enthusiasm for a stronger American posture in the international arena foreshadowed this country's emergence as a world power after 1900. This drawing of Harrison is thought to be a preliminary sketch for a large formal portrait by Eastman Johnson, which hangs today in the White House.
