No, complete it with a MALE actor, a male actor who's bright, sensitive, courageous and strong enough to survive and shine amidst the greatest female cast in decades (if not ever). That's what they had to do with The Hours, about the effect of Virginia Woolf on successive generations of women. They had to find that man, a REAL man who would have presence but wouldn't dominate. Russell Crowe ? Too rough, too moody. Tom Cruise ? Too megalomaniacal - did you see the posters for Vanilla Sky? No, they needed a guy of actorly presence and great human dignity, who could convince but not feel the need to steal every scene. It HAD to be Ed Harris Harris spent the first 15 years of his career as a guy everyone liked but no one could remember. Perhaps this was due to his rare talent and intelligence. Always imbuing his characters with conflicting personalities and desires, Harris never appeals directly to our baser instincts. When he's a hero, he has dreadful failings too. Thus people don't want to BE him like they want to BE

Robert Duncan's Life and Career Paul Christensen D uncan, Robert Edward (7 Jan. 1919-3 Feb. 1988), poet, was born Edward Howard Duncan in Oakland, California, the son of Edward Howard Duncan, a day laborer, and Marguerite Pearl Carpenter, who died at childbirth. His father could not afford to keep him, and he was adopted in August 1919 by Edwin Joseph Symmes, an architect, and Minnehaha Harris, who renamed him Robert Edward Symmes. After a psychiatric discharge from the army in 1941, the poet made a composite of his previous names to form the present one. Duncan's foster parents were devout Theosophists and chose their adopted son after consulting horoscopes and astrological charts relating to his birth; he was told he was descended from a line after the destruction of Atlantis and was fated to witness a second death of civilization by fire and holocaust. Duncan grew up in an atmosphere of seances, meetings of the Hermetic Brotherhood, and a library of occult literature. His childhood dreams were carefully interpreted by his parents; following an accident on the snow at age three he was cross-eyed and saw double, a fact that seemed to confirm the "double vision" of his parents' world. The twinning of objects in his sight later entered his poetry as a motif of the dual realities of sight and imagination. As he wrote in Roots and Branches , "I

Webmaster's Note: On October 2, 2003 Friends' Director, Robert Utley was the keynote speaker at the annual formal ball of the First Squadron, Seventh Cavalry, at Fort Hood, Texas. Utley told me, "These guys are still gung-ho. When saluting, they say 'Garryowen.' I got a thorough tour of one of their 16 big tanks and 16 Bradleys converted for recon purposes. The sophistication is awesome, the shock probably would be too, against a conventional enemy. As they are the first to concede, however, their kind of power is not well suited to what is happening in Iraq. They deploy early next year. Some 700 officers and EM with spouses turned out in formal attire. They don't wear the usual dress-uniform cap but the old wide-brimmed cavalry hat with cross sabers and the regimental crest. I even saw some sporting spurs and asked the Command Sergeant Major about them. He said they were not an affectation. You had to earn them with a two-day course in horsemanship."
T hank you, Colonel Salter, for that generous introduction. Even so, I’m going to have to get a bit autobiographical, as background for some of the things I want to say.

    http://www.robertfulford.com/OntarioArts.html
Robert Fulford's column about Mike Harris and the arts
The National Post , July 10, 2001) It is a truth universally acknowledged among artists in Toronto that Premier Mike Harris has wrecked the cultural life of Ontario. This opinion must baffle newspaper readers elsewhere in Canada. On the one hand, Ontario artists seem to spend their time accepting prizes, signing big contracts, and bragging about their international success; on the other, they claim they are living in dark times, starved by a mean, vicious government. The consensus in the cultural community is simple: We must live in hope that some day Harris will be defeated so that his successor can bring back the creative policies of the pre-Harris years, when sympathetic governments vigorously encouraged the arts. It happens that this is nonsense, but it is popular nonsense. In some Toronto circles, it is more or less mandatory. Artists holding contrary ideas usually remain silent, to avoid being condemned for heresy. Certainly David Macfarlane, the novelist and journalist, would consider any deviation from the anti-Harris line to be, at best, eccentric. Macfarlane has become the chief articulator of this belief. He has written several dozen columns in The Globe and Mail lamenting the wretched state of culture under our wretched Premier. Almost every week, Macfarlane states his view of Harris, the same view he held the week before. Readers can only assume that the reason he doesn't state it several times a week is that he writes only in Monday's paper.
