Harris, Joel Chandler Harris, Joel Chandler, , American short-story writer and humorist, b. Eatonton, Ga., considered one of the greatest American regionalist writers. As an apprentice to the editor of the Countryman, a newspaper published on a Southern plantation, Harris gained firsthand knowledge of black slaves and their folklore. His stories and sketches of the South were originally published in the Atlanta Constitution, with which he was associated from 1876 to 1900. Harris's first collection, Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings (1881), brought him immediate fame. Featuring as their narrator a lovable, shrewd former slave, the Uncle Remus stories drew upon African-American folklore and humor and captured the authentic life, character, and dialect of Southern blacks. The demand for his stories and sketches was so great that Harris followed with nine more books in a similar vein, including The Tar Baby (1904) and Uncle Remus and Br'er Rabbit (1906). In other notable works, such as

Mystery Building This issue's mystery building is not located in the United States, but it is on American soil. Can you tell us what it is, where it is located, when it was built, and who designed it? Send responses to Mystery Building, National Building Museum, 401 F Street NW, Washington, DC 20001. The summer 1996 mystery building popularly known as the Wren's Nest was identified by 11 Blueprints readers: Kathleen Best, Robert Drew, John R. Elliott, Brian L. Gartner, Esther Geiger, Harold Larsen, Jose Martinez, Carol Mitten, Laura Muckenfuss, Scott Power, and Ida C. Scott. Located in Atlanta, it is the former home of author Joel Chandler Harris (1848-1908), best known for his Uncle Remus stories. The house was built in 1867 and originally had only two rooms and a basement kitchen. An 1872 addition created a "dogtrot" floor plan with rooms off a wide central hallway. Harris purchased the house in 1883 and did extensive remodeling in 1884, adding the Queen Anne facade, two parlors, an upstairs room, a back porch, and a main-level kitchen. The Harris home was known as Snap Bean Farm until a wren was found building a next in the mailbox. Instead of disturbing the bird, the family put up a new mailbox, and the home became known as the Wren's Nest. After Harris' death, a group of his admirers purchased the house and opened it as a museum, which features original furnishings, personal effects such as the author's typewriter and eyeglasses, and the nest for which the house is named.
