I don't know who invented him originally, but he's certainly a stock figure of children's literature and is always the underdog whose cunning wins the day. Back EBONICS IN THE CONTEXT OF AMERICAN CULTURE Elena S. Petrova, St. Petersburg State University
    The new term ‘Ebonics’, which frequently occurs in the US media, is missing from conventional dictionaries. The closest one can get to it is Ebony, explained by the Longman Dictionary of English language and Culture as “American magazine, esp. for and about African Americans.” Therefore, it should be obvious enough that term Ebonics, roughly speaking, has something to do with African Americans. In fact, the variety of English that is currently termed Ebonics by various publications including TESOL Matters, has been known for decades as Black English, or Black English Vernacular, or African American Vernacular. The term in question sounds vivid, it looks good in writing, it is short enough and does not make a direct reference to race or color, but isn’t there more to it than meets the eye? To answer this question, we will have to look into three major issues:
    - Social and cultural attitudes toward African American English;
    - Its entry into the mainstream of American culture;

    Welcome to our "Georgia Writers" page
    Early on we realized that we had to have some criteria or some definition of who we would include on this page as a "Georgia Writer." And we wanted to be fairly inclusive without going overboard. So we came up with the following
    For our purposes a "Georgia Writer" is a published writer who:
  • Was born in the state of Georgia.
  • Lives in the state of Georgia.
  • Writes about the state of Georgia
  • Whether deceased or living, were long time residents of Georgia and whose work reflects this in some way.
  • Writers who have lived in Georgia, who want to be considered Georgia Writers and want to be included on this page. My mother, and business partner, has devoted a great deal of time and research into preparing a text list of Georgia Writers. She has gathered this information from Georgia Libraries, other online sources and sites, and a lot of digging around. This list is posted below in TXT format for anyone to view or download. Please realize that because we draw this information from many sources and often don't have another source with which to verify the information, this list is and will always be a work in progress. If you know of a writer we should include, or know some of our information to be incorrect, PLEASE

    Kompa Nanzi and Brer Rabbit - Two Tricksters and Their Fates
    by Gary C. Fouse

    The creole language of Papiamentu enjoys a distinguished status among the creoles of the world. The native language of some 300,000 people in Curacao, Aruba and Bonaire (and their diaspora -largely in the Netherlands), Papiamentu is not only established in written form, but also is the subject of a long-standing controversy over its origin. Linguistic researchers have still not been able to come to agreement on the question of whether Papiamentu resulted from the contact between the Spanish conquistadors and the Amer-Indian residents of the islands beginning in 1499 (polygenesis theory), or resulted from an Afro-Portuguese pidgin that originated on the west coast of Africa as the African-Atlantic slave trade developed. (monogenesis theory). Though Papiamentu is at an advanced stage of development among creoles in having a written form (differences in spelling exist among the three islands and standardization is still in progress) another interesting aspect of Papiamentu’s history is the oral tradition which, like other Caribbean creoles, traces its roots back to Africa. One of the great oral traditions that African slaves brought with them to the New World is that of the trickster tales. These are tales that, in Africa, were told by the griots, or story-tellers of the various villages. The central character, depending on the part of Africa involved, was a spider, rabbit or tortoise, a small, weak animal that used its cunning to escape dangerous situations ( generally of its own making due to its devious nature) at the hands of larger, stronger adversaries, such as a tiger, fox or bear.
