  • Georgia Writers: A Rich Literary Tradition
By Ted Wadley Georgia was the youngest of the original thirteen colonies, founded in 1732 by English philanthropist James Oglethorpe (1691-1785). Following a suggestion of Daniel Defoe that the New World could provide opportunities for the poor, Georgia was to be a society of yeoman farmers and craftspeople in which slavery was prohibited. Despite Oglethorpe's success in the planning and construction of Savannah, the utopian vision foundered on pressures such as greater prosperity in the other colonies. Early settlement was concentrated on the coast and inland along the Savannah River in the northeastern part of the state, thus giving Georgia a "western frontier" well into the 19th century. Augustus Baldwin Longstreet (1790-1870) was an early writer in the tradition of southwestern humor; his Georgia Scenes was subtitled, "Characters, Incidents, &c. in the First Half Century of the Republic." Sketches such as "The Horse Swap," "The Fight," and "Character of a Native Georgian" furnished images which reappeared in later American fiction.

Joel Chandler Harris - (1848-1908) Eatonton By Candace Whitley I. Biography Joel Chandler Harris was born in Eatonton, Georgia on December 9, 1848. As he was growing up, he began to love to write. Even though he had a difficult childhood, he grew up to be a great poet and writer. In 1876, Harris worked as part of the newspaper staff in Macon and in Savannah. After 1876, he was part of the staff editing the Atlanta Constitution. After he quit editing the newspapers, he began writing poems, proverbs and children's books. In 1883, he published UncleRemus: His Songs and Sayings , his first poem and proverbs. Later collections include Night with Uncle Remus , published in 1883, Uncle Remus and His Friends , published in 1892, and Uncle Remus and the Little Boy, published in 1905. The technique that Joel Chandler Harris used was that he told his stories in the first person. He based his tales and stories on relationships. The tales are told with much dialogue and dialect. Chandler died in Atlanta, Georgia on July 3, 1908. II. Sources

    Southern Literature

    Joel Chandler Harris (1848-1908)
Born in the Putman County seat of Eatonton, Georgia, in the late days of the antebellum South, Joel Chandler Harris was the love child of Mary Harris, a respectable, unmarried woman, who, at thirty-one, ran away from her home in an adjoining county with an Irish day laborer. Deserted soon after her son's birth, the proud and educated Mary lived with Joe (Harris' lifelong nickname) in a one-room shed. With the exception of Mary's sewing, their livelihood depended on the generosity of Eatonton citizens. The four years (1862-1866) Harris lived at Turnwold changed his life and shaped his career. Under the tutelage of the well-educated Turner, Harris became a neophyte journalist and acquired the information and values that would make him, like his mentor, a champion of southern life and literature. However, Turner's southern patriot dreams died with the arrival of Federal troops in 1864 and the failure of Turnwold and its newspaper two years later. In his autobiographical reflections, On the Plantation (1892), Harris described his early friendship with the Turnwold slaves, especially the storytellers Mink, Old George, and Aunt Crissyall of whom became a composite for Uncle Remus. For Harris, Eatonton and Turnwold were emblems of southern hospitality and compassionate gentility. While Harris was never fully separated from his vision of a loving, egalitarian, slave-holding Confederacy, his sympathy and his literary fame would rest with those who, like himself, learned to survive on the margins of white privilege and power.

JOEL CHANDLER HARRIS (1848-1908) Harris is famous for writing the Uncle Remus stories. In these tales animal characters such as Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox act like human beings. The resourceful and witty Brer Rabbit exemplified survival for slaves in the South. These stories were based on traditional African tricksters tales and folklore that slaves told on the plantations. Harris worked on a plantation where he learned the language and listened to the stories of the slaves. Their stories became the basis for his successful tales. The Uncle Remus tales are a valuable contribution to Southern folklore, capturing the folk tales, speech, and culture of Southern blacks. The following African folktales are recommended for giving an insight into the basis for the Uncle Remus stories: Rabbit Makes a Monkey of Lion by Verna Aardema and Sungura and Leopard by Barbara Knutson. Contributed by B. Razza, 11/18/95. LETTER FROM THEODORE ROOSEVELT
TO JOEL CHANDLER HARRIS To Joel Chandler Harris White House, Oct. 12, 1901. MY DEAR HARRIS: It is worth while being President when one's small daughter receives that kind of an autograph gift. When I was younger than she is, my Aunt Annie Bulloch, of Georgia, used to tell me some of the brer rabbit stories, especially brer rabbit and the tar baby. But fond though I am of the brer rabbit stories I think I am even fonder of your other writings. I doubt if there is a more genuinely pathetic tale in all our literature than "Free Joe." Moreover I have felt that all that you write serves to bring our gether. I know, of course, the ordinary talk is that an artist should be judged purely by his art; but I am rather a Philistine and like to feel that the art serves a good purpose. Your art is not only an art addition to our sum of national achievement, but it has also always been an addition to the forces that tell for decency, and above all for the blotting out of sectional antagonism.
