This cemetery is maintained and in good shape. The cemetery sign reads: 'Castle Rock Valley Cemetery, founded 1863.' The central drive of this cemetery leads to a large caste iron life-sized soldier. The iron soldier is in memory of 'our soldier dead', dedicated 30 May 1913. In "History of Dakota County and the city of Hastings", by Rev. Edward D. Neill, written in 1881, he writes: '...At the annual town meeting held 7 April 1863, a committee was appointed to select a site for a public cemetery. ... The committee reported having selected six acres in the north-east corner of south-east quarter of section 21, which could be purchased for five dollars an acre. ... Upwards of a hundred internment's have been made. Previous to the establishment of the cemetery, the dead were buried in different parts of the town, on the farms of relatives on the deceased. A number of these bodies have been removed and placed in the public cemetery.' (page 334). Neill also writes: 'He [Joseph Harris] settled in the town in the spring of 1855, made his claim in the south-west quarter of section 17, but lived with his son on the north-east quarter of section 20 until he died 30 September 1869, in his eightieth year of his age. He was buried in the cemetery belonging to the town on the east side of section 21.' (page 332).

Frank Harris is known today almost exclusively for his eroticor pornographic My Life and Loves, but aside from that he played a central role in letters around the turn of the century, and was a fine writer whose many other works deserve renewed attention in this new millennium. There are many accounts of his life, and nobody is sure when he was born1854, 1855, or 1856. A very anti-Harris introduction by John Dos Passos gives some details. Also, we are not sure in which category to place Harris: Irish, English, or American literaturehe claimed citizenship in each. http://www.oddbooks.co.uk/harris/

Born Galway Born, probably on 14 February 1856, son of a naval commander in the revenue service; educated Royal School, Armagh, and an English grammar school. At fifteen he ran away to America, where, after working as a bootblack, hotel clerk, and cowpuncher, he attended the State University of Kansas. Returned to Europe, travelled for a while, studied at Heidelberg, and at twenty-seven descended on London to begin his literary career, editing successively the Evening News Fortnightly Review , and, as proprietor, Saturday Review . His marriage in 1887 to a wealthy widow, Mary Edith Clayton, failed, and in 1894 he eloped with Helen O'Hara, whom he later married. From 1894 to 1899 he made the Saturday Review the most brilliant literary and political weekly of the time. Of his several plays, Mr and Mrs Daventry was the most successful; he also wrote some novels and volumes of short stories. The 'new' psycho-analytical approach in his own favourite critical work, The Man Shakespeare , neither pleased nor impressed Shakespeare scholars. He sold the
